  1. Pink resembles the dead or dying scuds as opposed to the live ones. While most live scuds will appear a more olive or dark gray color the dead ones lose that tone and become a pinkish white color. Pink is a great color when the water is rising and washing dead scuds off the shore that got stranded when the water dropped. I usually will fish a more natural olive or gray if the water has been off for a while, but pink is always a good bet if there has been recent generation to trigger those fish into keying on the dead scuds.
  2. Last year I had a great 3 day trip the last week of October. Lots of browns up top at that time. Like Lilley said later on about December you still have a few big browns hanging around and if things go right the rainbows are starting to stage for their spawn later in the early spring. There's just no bad time to fish Taney as long as the weather and the SWPA will cooperate.
  3. After diving with friends on the lake all day Saturday I had a few hours to fish on Sunday morning before heading back to KC. Got down there at about 6:00 a.m. met a buddy and we started out fishing between outlets #1 and #2. We didn't hang out in any one area too long, just kept moving looking for nicer fish. Caught a few fish apiece out of just about every spot we stopped until the fog started clearing and then the fishing picked up considerably. Early on a purple #20 Bit-Scud trailed with a purple-wine G-Bug was tops and as the fog cleared we switched over to more natural olives and browns in the same fly set-up. Big fish of the day was a beautiful 22" brown caught by my friend just down from re-bar. Definitely starting to see a few nicer browns staging around already. Had to be at work here in KC at 3:00 so I took off about 10:30 and pushed the speed limits home.
  4. The last time I fished 2 days after a moss cutting the trash was still evident in the stream. Not enough to make it unfishable but enough to keep you picking little bits of weeds off your line everey few casts. The fish were really keying on small olive scuds that day as I believe that the moss cutting dislodged large numbers of them into the food base. Was just at BSSP on Sat. and the fishing is lights out right now. Some of the better holding areas have so many fish that it's almost too easy. Stay small with your flies and weights/indicators and definitely use 7x if possible. I had a buddy this weekend that started off with a mono tippet and it didn't take him half an hour of watching us catch a fish a drift with the 7x flouro to switch over. As far as the moss, if possible I'd go the day before. There are large amounts of it in the stream right now and some areas may have worse residual effects than others.
  5. John - If you fish Taney much , those extras are some of my favorite tailwater flies. The purples are especially good early morning or overcast days. Enjoy......Jeff
  6. Dropped my flies in the mail today. Havn't seen any action on this topic in a while so I hope you're not waiting on mine to finish it up. Thanks to John for holding the swap. Looking forward to seeing (and fishing ) everyone's flies when they arrive. These windy hot days ought to be blowing lots of ants, beetles and hoppers in the water as I sit here at work and type . Sure wish I was waist deep in some 50 degree water right now!
  7. I will be spending some time at the lake this next week and wanted to make a morning trip over to Crane one day. I have never been and was wondering what's the best route to get there from Branson (I'll be staying over by Kimberling actually) and about how long will it take. My plans were to fish Taney in the mornings but I notice generation has picked up again recently so I want a second option to wet a line while the wife sleeps in . Thanks for any info.
  8. Check out Charteredwaters.com. The gentleman that owns the shop is the original creator of the G-Bug and a super nice guy.
  9. I have a really good friend who will be elk hunting in Colorado in September. He's just recently gotten into flyfishing also and he plans to stop and fish around Glenwood Springs for a few days on his way out. I've given him some advice on techniques and a few fly suggestions (I've never been to Colorado so I'm just doling out generic info) but wondered if anyone had any suggestions on which rivers fish best and where he might find good accesses. I'm sure that he will greatly appreciate any info I can pass on to him. Thanks
  10. I fished the park on Friday and had similar success. I fished mainly the area between the whistle bridge and the dam. As GregSTC said there are definitely some nicer fish in the stream right now as well as large quantities. Caught lots of fish nymphing with small olive scuds. The water was still full of weeds from the moss cutting and I'm sure lots of scuds and other insects were displaced in the stream. The fish seemed to be feeding throughout the water column fairly randomly. When I tired of catching fish nymphing I tied on a flying ant pattern in size #16 and ended up catching 7 or 8 fish on it before I had to pack it up and head back to KC. I didn't try one but I saw a gentleman doing very well on a stripped crackleback (don't know exactly what color) also. The stream is looking very good right now(except for all of the ugly fish carcasses in the water ) and fishing equally as well. I would suggest using a maximum of 6x tippet (I was using 7x all day)though as I ran into some other people who were struggling using heavier than that.
  11. I'm in as well. I don't do much tying with foam but I do carry some foam patterns that I have done very well with. One of these is the Foam Flying Ant which I will attempt to tie for the swap.
  12. What do you think all these recent high water conditions has done to the fishing? After a high water event like last week does the fishing go right back to normal as the water levels drop or does the extremely high water adversely affect the fishing in the river for a while (or for that matter does it help the fishing). Just looking for some opinions.
  13. Spent Friday and Saturday scuba diving on Table Rock but managed to catch a few hours fishing Saturday morning from 6:00 until about 9:30. No units were running but the water had dropped out very slowly from the previous days generation and the tailwater level was still a little above normal (701.3). Started off between chute #1 and #2 using a #20 purple bit-scud with a #20 wine G-Bug for a trailer sight fishing some shallow fish. Caught several average rainbows and landed one real nice brown that went 18". Thanks to the gentleman that helped me net and measure the fish even after I tromped into his fishing area trying to subdue this fish before he snapped my 7X tippet. Caught several fish laying along the North bank on my way down to re-bar. Changed over to a ginger G-Bug with an olive G-Bug dropper and fished a pod of midging fish on the dam side of re-bar just before the bend. Started off catching some fish nymphing with an indicator here as I had upstream but soon found that I was catching more fish on the end of drift swing than I was on my dead-drift so I removed my indicator and weight and started swinging the G-Bugs just as you would a soft hackle. This worked great and I finished off the morning with some really nice rainbows out of this spot. Ended up with around 30 fish in 3 1/2 hours fishing and a nice brown thrown in. Pretty good mornings fishing and I didn't even have to miss any sleep !
  14. Does anyone remember where I can find the topic that dealt with leader construction here not too long ago? I believe Mr Beeson started the topic and the piece I'm looking for was where Davy Wotton explained his leader building technique using amnesia. I'm sure that it was here and not on Flyfishing Arkansas but I can't locate it in either forum. Thanks
  15. Posted a report under "Fishing Report 6/22/07" jj. Fishing was awesome . If you havn't been lately you need to hit it now. Between Hillbilly Days and some of the other events that have gone on recently the stream is just full of fish, and some nice ones too.
  16. There really is no predicting generation at any of the SWPA dams. I'm sure that many others will agree that just when you think you see a trend they'll throw a loop at you. As long as the lake level is above power pool and there is holding capacity down below they will generate whenever they can put power out on the grid. In the summer this means quite frequent generation due to the electric load. I think I'd keep my money in my pocket when it comes to betting on generation probability.
  17. Made the one day trip from KC on Friday and was surprised to find the park relatively uncrowded. Fishing was excellent with a lot of nice fish in the stream right now. I caught fish on everything I threw from g-bugs to soft hackles and even a couple on an elk hair caddis ( one that I tyed using Caddis's pattern from the fly swap. This is a great fly pattern and caught fish in the light olive and ginger dyed quill body as well as the caddis green that was in the swap. Thanks Caddis, great fly!). Fishing was about as good as it gets for trout park action. I really wished I could have stayed until dark and got in some more dry fly action but I hate that drive back in the dark by myself as I tend to start dozing off . I fished just about everywhere from the whistle bridge clear to the spring and fishing was good throughout but the most fish were caught in the first 50 yd stretch above the whistle.
  18. Drove down from KC for the day to fish on Friday. I spent most of my time in the park but I did go down to the main access and fish for about an hour. Started at the riffle in front of the canoe launch and worked my way downstream to just before the boat ramp. Started off with a san-juan(red) point fly with a copper john dropper. No bites so I started switching up the dropper and adjusting my depth and weight trying to find the right combination. Never found it today, ended up with only one small rainbow where normally I have done better. Still enjoyed the fishing, the fish just won this round. Off topic, but are there any of you that float the river in a personal pontoon when the canoe traffic isn't bad? I have just purchased one recently and was looking for someone to float with. I figure the Niangua would be a good moving water for a beginner like me (under normal flows).
  19. I'm leaving early Friday morning for a quick one day to the park. Too much water running at all my favorite tailwaters ! Anyone from the area wanna catch a ride down let me know, got room in the truck.
  20. We have an extra set of caddis fly imitations that we have decided to donate to a good cause. I thought about the auction at the FFF southern conclave as I know a lot of you are members and attend. It's a 16 fly set of assorted caddis patterns and I would be happy to package them nicely for donation. If anyone knows if the FFF auction would be interested or if you know of a better recipient please respond. Thanks for your help.
  21. The flies went in the mail today, finally. Thanks to everyone who participated, evryone turned out some really nice flies that I think you'll all enjoy fishing. Rolan, I havn't sent your set out yet but I have them all sitting on my flybench ready to package up, probably a day or two. I will post an inquiry on the General Discussion topic and see if any of the OAF members know of a worthy donation recipient for the extra set. Thanks again everyone, I'd be happy to host another swap anytime enough people have the interest.
  22. I don't think that last set of flies is coming guys. I'm going to go ahead and put them in the mail tomorrow if things go as planned. What about donating the extra set of flies to the auction at the FFF southern conclave this fall. I'm not a member but anything that benefits and promotes flyfishing is good in my book. I am planning on attending this year and I saw on their website that they were taking donations for their auction. We could donate them under OAF. I'm open for suggestions from all tiers. I don't even know if they would take them for the auction but I'm sure someone else on the forum will know.
  23. I am still waiting on 1 set of flies to arrive. Zach are they on the way? If I don't get a reply or see the flies by Wednesday I will go ahead and send what I have. You will each get an extra set of your own back if I don't get the last set.
  24. It's attitudes like " I own it, I can do what I want with it regardless of effects on the environment" that have created most of our ecological nightmares. I sure hope most people have more sense than to think the way Taxidermist does. He wants to take away our rights to public waters and destroy our environment in the name of commerce. Some folks need to think before they open their mouth or simply have the sense to keep it shut!
  25. Thanks for the info Terry. We'll be leaving KC at 5:00 tomorrow morning and headed that way. I looked up the number for Rim Shoals and put it in my cell, I'll check the generation # and there before I head down to fish. Even though I'll fish Taney with generation I don't know the White well enough to fish in the same situation so I'll play it safe and stay at RockBridge if there's more than one unit online.
