I will be staying at RockBridge Mo for the next couple of days before we head to Taney and was wondering where would be a good spot to try on the white if we had a few hours? If I read the maps correctly the dam on BS should only be about an hours drive from where I'm staying just outside of Ava. Havn't ever really fished the White (only once at the dam for a few hours on my way to Norfork) and wondered if anyone had any suggestions? I'm thinking that sometime on Thursday we might drive over that way and fish the tailwater for a few hours. Is the generation recording somewhat accurate? Is anything over 1 generator too much to fish while wading at BS? Thanks for any input I can get in the short time left.

Keeper Guide Rings on Fishing Rods
DeepDiver75 replied to Mart's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
You tie the hook keeper on the same as you would an eye. I would suggest the fold down type and place it on the underneath side of the rod to keep it from interfering with casting. Anyplace that carries rod building supplies will have these (cabelas, Feathercraft). -
I have recieved all but one set of flies (Zach) as of today. A great looking bunch of flies that I think everyone will be pleased with. I will be on vacation this week so I probably won't think about mailing them out until I arrive back next weekend. Hopefully the last set will be in by then. I do plan on giving some of my set a try next week though, can't wait. I'll be at RockBridge with a buddy and his son for 2 days and then we're heading to Norfork or Taney depending on where we think we'll catch the least generation. Should be an enjoyable 5 day fishing trip.

One pattern not mentioned is the egg pattern. If you will be fishing the parks much some type of egg pattern is a must and every once in a while it will save a bad day just about anywhere. I only fish the micro eggs that are unweighted but there are numerous types that will be effective. Stick with the natural egg colors such as light orange or pink.

Don't know if this info will interest anyone out there or not. Dove 4 different spots on TR around the Indian Point area and saw large numbers of nice bass. The majority of the bass seen were between 15 and 25 feet deep. Almost all of them were relating to wood structure on rock walls. Large numbers of 2 to 3 inch bluegill swimming around at the same levels as the bass so I would guess they would be a food source? I'm not a bass fisherman but I do fish for walleye and crappie at home so I enjoy paying attention to what the fish are doing when I'm underwater.

My wife and I didn't encounter large amounts of canoe traffic, as we tried to plan around it, but I can't say that I noticed a dropoff in fishing when a group floated through. Although i will say that some of the groups passing through while I was fishing were not very pleasant to listen to while we were trying to enjoy the river and relax. Why is it that some people turn into rude A!#$$!holes when they get a few adult beverages in them?
-
Fried up a whole mess of them last night that were just caught Monday evening. Anyone who hasn't ever eaten a walleye is sure missing out!! I can't say that I enjoy walleye or crappie fishing as much as flyfishing for trout but I don't mind giving up a few weeks a year to fill the freezer .

I've recieved LShack2 and KansasFlyFisher flies. Sorry for the delay on the report but the walleye are really going in the local lakes and I've been spending all my time on the water . Great looking flies guys and thanks for the bonus flies. You can believe that they will be put to good use. I've only got about half of mine done so far, I need a day or two that are too nasty to put the boat on the lake to finish them up. If I don't get them finished in time can I send you each a bag of walleye fillets in place of flies? HaHa

How much farther downriver is Prosperine? Havn't heard of that area. Forgot to mention in the earlier post the large amount of mayflies hatching in the evenings. These things were really small (size 22?) and a white or beige color. Just before dark and well into the night they literally covered everything in camp ( we were only camped 50 ft from the river). Anyway they looked like tiny mayflies to me but I'm not much of an entomologist.

Just wondered if anyone else has had trouble accessing the SWPA generation # (417-336-5083) this weekend? I have tried to call numerous times over the weekend and it has been busy every time. I know it's not unusual to have to try a few times to get through but I havn't been able to get through at all.

We must be talking about two different sets of bouys? I'm talking about the ones about 250 yards off the dam to keep boats out. The area inside of this has been a popular swimming and diving area for as long as I can remember. They even have a set of stairs leading down to the water? On a saturday morning there will be 20 divers and as many swimmers along the entire shoreline. If this is illegal activity then you've got some of the most ignorant wardens in the country because it happens on a daily basis. I don't set out to intentionally break any laws and I would not dive there if there were signs posted to the contrary, there are not. I have spent an entire day at this spot with a class of 20 students in and out of the water and a dive trailer parked at the top of the stairs. Never have we been told that we were in violation of any laws. I don't mean to beat a dead horse but I'm just trying to get the facts straight. I have seen many dam areas where swimming inside of the bouyed area would get you a ticket, TRD is not one of these places.

fly fishing pontoons
DeepDiver75 replied to trouthappy's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
I posed this same question a couple of months ago under Gear reviews farther down in the forum. I got several replies so you might check out that thread. I still havn't made the purchase but have pretty much decided on the FishCat 9. I also thought about the cheaper TU models but heard some bad reports about cheap valves that scared me away from them. The other comment I got was to stay away from the cordura covered toons if possible. Hope this helps some. -
I am done with the terrorist argument. I agree with one poster who said everyone just needs to spend a little more time fishing and a little less time worrying about what might happen. I do have to refute taxidermists statement that it is not safe to dive at the dam. I know lots of people who have done it , still do it and will continue to do it. If there were a safety issue ( within reasonable diving limits) it would have been addressed long before now. You must be talking about a different Table Rock lake than myself in your statement that it is illegal to boat swim or dive inside the bouys. Have you ever driven across the dam on a hot summer day and looked at the Dewey Short area? This area is a very popular swimming and diving location and I have yet seen a ticket or warning issued in all my years of using it. I just hope all those swimmers don't get sucked through the dam with that 12 knot current

Recieved the first batch of Caddis imitations today. A great looking CDC caddis imitation from Steve Smith (thanks for the bonus flies Steve, they are greatly appreciated!!). I sat down last night and tied a few of my pattern for practice, will probably try to tie a few for the swap tonight.

Taxidermist- I have also been diving a long time (25 Years) and have logged over 200 dives in Table Rock alone. First of all the dam is a totally safe place to dive as there is no chance of getting sucked through the turbines at any recreational diving depth. I have dove at Dewey Short often times in the summer when they are generating heavily and there is most definitely not an 11 to 12 knot current. Just facts from lots of experience. I help teach classes at Table Rock from time to time and we often dive at Dewey due to the easy access, I wouldn't want anyone to read the previous posts and assume that it was dangerous. I still say watch what you wish for from our govt in the way of protection from terrorists. Is it better to be safe and lose all of our freedoms in the process than to be happy and live with a chance of an attack?
-
I am an avid diver on Table Rock and dive Dewey Short a few times a year due to the easy access to extremely deep walls. I have often times swam up and touched the dam face down at 100 ft and it is an exciting experience. While I understand your concerns, do you really think that we need more regulations to take away access to our public property? You can't strangle yourself in ever tightening govt. regulations to try and ward off the fear of being attacked again by terrorists. We all know how the govt is, give them an inch and they'll take a mile. What if they just decided that 1 mile was as close as anyone needed to be to the dam structures? I'm not willing to give up any more of my rights even if it is in the name of security. One other point, it would take more explosives than one man could carry on his back to do any serious damage to one of our major dams

The 3 top lines of Cabelas flyrods are manufactured by G.Loomis. I'm not sure where the lower priced ones are made. I give plenty of my business to the local flyshops also, but I have never had any issues with Cabelas return policies. If it's a Cabelas brand item and you have a problem with it or just don't like it they will take it back no questions asked. I own an Sli that I don't use much anymore but found it to be a great rod for it's purpose(and price).
-
Sounds great!! Is it against the rules for me to test run my pair before the swap is completed?? I just can't stand to let a good fly sit in my box unused!!
-
I live in Olathe and can recommend the fly tying classes held out at Cabela's by their flyshop. They have beginner and intermediate lessons for a minimal price. I also know that K&K Flyfisher in Overland Park gives tying lessons. I think you get a little more in depth in this class and it costs a little more but they are good people. This is where I purchase the majority of my tying supplies here locally. If you need any more info just holler I'd be glad to help out.

I own numerous reels but only a couple that I would give rave reviews. My favorite reels are my two Lamson Litespeeds. I have the old version but the drag on these reels is infinitely adjustable with absolutely no start-up torque. For guys like me that are constantly dunking your reel it's also totally sealed. They are extremely lightweight and go well with todays lighter flyrods. I also own a Cabela's brand SR reel and I am really impressed with this reel for the price. The drag is almost as smooth as the Lamson's although it's not sealed. The major difference is apparent in the weight of the reel compared to the Lamson.

June 1st is the due date for the Caddis Imitation swap. Two flies per person for the 9 tyers involved plus an extra fly for Rolan makes it 19 flies total. I'll post my address below for shipment: Jeff House 16112 s Cole Olathe, Kansas 66062 Deepdiver75@sbcglobal.net (send me an E-mail if there are any questions)

I live just South of KC in Olathe. I've got a boat on Table Rock set up for diving but I also dive Norfork, Bull Shoals and Beaver quite regularly. Have never done any diving in Oklahoma (your home right?) but would be up to giving it a try this summer. How about some suggestions on due dates for these flies? We'll stop at 9 tyers and move on with the swap. Don't forget the extra fly for Rolan to photograph and post. I'm thinking June 1st for the due date if that works for everyone. I thought about a May date but I know with the nice weather we'll all want to be out using our flies instead of sitting at the bench tying them. Some of you involved chime in and let me know what works for you.

Wanted to say that I enjoyed meeting some of the members from the forum at the tournament. I got to talk with Don and TroutChaser on Friday before the tournament and trade some fishing secrets. Although the fishing was pretty good on Friday, the day of the tournament those trout kicked my butt!! I really had to work to catch very many fish at all, but it's that challenge that will keep me coming back. I always enjoy Beaver for a change of scenery and a little solitude compared to the other tailwaters ( but I'm ready to make a trip to Taney soon and redeem myself for Saturday!!!) Met Steve in the store and he was the friendly, helpful person that you would expect him to be after reading his posts on the forum. Fished with Eric (DuckyDoty's friend) in the tournament and he was a great guy and a heck of a fisherman. Really enjoyed his company and hope to see him at Taney sometime and fish again. Wished I could have stayed around longer to see the results of all the teams and meet Faith but I had to be back in KC on Sunday to go to work so we headed out right after turning in our results. Hope to make it to the Taney get together and meet a few more of you.
-
I'll be down there Friday too DuckyDoty. They've been starting to generate about 4:00 the last few days so I'm hoping to get an hour or two in before they start. We'll be camping down below the dam (white silverado with diveflag plate on front bumper)stop by and visit if you get a chance. I won't know until tomorrow afternoon if we need a 4th or not. I've got 3 definites and 1 maybe. If the 4th doesn't come we'd be happy to have your friend as our 4th.
