  1. fishing is over after the 8th of feb. this year.
  2. I will break off a big fish if it is snagged, but if the fish is small enough to just reel in I'll reel it in and a just remove the hook, but I always break the tippet if the fish seems to be to big to just bring in quickly, I use barbless hooks so the hook hopefully will fall out soon. I think you did the right thing, I see a lot of big fish snagged, landed, handled excessively and photographed and then thrown back in the river, just to see them belly up a few minutes later, those bigger fish just don't take that kind of treatment very well. I always try to remember a fish can hold its breath no longer than I can, so a minute out of the water and a fish will be stressed pretty bad, two minutes and it will be hard to revive, 3 minutes or more, it will probably die, even if it swims off. If you want to catch em again you got to treat them well.
  3. The Dept. of conservation stocked a few more lunkers (fish over 18") into Roaring River again this past week, maybe it was two weeks ago, most were 3 to 4 lb fish, but a few were over 6, + another 2000 stocker sized, so the fishing has been very good. This comming up weekend is the last weekend of the C&R season so come out and enjoy looks like it won't be to bad weather wise anyhow. The water at Roaring River is up a bit and has some color to it right now, the snow melting and the rains we got just before the snow has caused the river to be a bit cloudy, on a sunny day with polaroid glasses you can still see 5 or 6 feet into the water. We have been having some great dry fly days, caddis, baties flies, adams, griffiths gnats and cracklebacks have all been effective the past few weeks. If you want to nymph fish, then the pheasant tail, copper john, zebra midge, san juan worm, glo-ball chamois worms, scuds, sowbugs and gold ribbed hares ears, all caught good amounts of trout this weekend. Woolybuggers, muddler minnows, bunny bugs and other hairy streamers are doing well fished deep in the pools. Been some good fish caught on soft hackles, orange/partridge, and green/partridge have done best for me this season. I'm getting away with 5X tippet on buggers and big streamers, 6X on nymphs, and stil using 7X on dries and very small nymphs. Still recommending 9' leaders and a # 4 or a # 6 shot placed about 6" above your nymphs, and if you use and indicator, set it at about 30" to start and adjust as needed, good luck on the river this week, and remember next weekend is it until the park reopens March 1st 2010 Tight lines, fish all you can. Tim's Fly Shop
  4. I had one guy show up yesterday from Arkansas. He told me the main hwys were good, the road to the park, hwy 112 was still pretty nasty, but he made it just fine in a front will drive, so I figure if you really want to fish, you can get here.
  5. Dr. Slick makes a nice nipper, with diamond dust on the side of the nipper, makes a good sharpener. Look up Dr. Slick(google them) and I'm sure it is on the site, I carry those in the shop.
  6. Had a nice day on crane, had several fish in the 16-17" range, one about 20" and one that was 18" Caught them all on glo-balls and woolybuggers. Had to put some extra weight on today, the water is clearing but is still running a foot higher than it was last week.
  7. The park is not closed, all the concessions are closed in the winter, park store, cabins and motel, the park office will be open in the afternoons on sunday, for campers, they have nothing to do with the fishing in the park. The hatchery will be open, but you can't buy anything there. The fly shop in on hwy 112 north of the park about 1/2 mile, and it is a another 6 miles to Cassville. Hope this helps. Holler at me on saturday, and I can tell you how good the roads are.
  8. Shoot the roads will be all cleared by monday, friday and saturday are going to be the lousy days, come on down, the trout need exercised.
  9. Thanks, glad it arrived in good condtion, enjoy.
  10. Unless there is a lot of ice on friday morning, the hill should be passable, if you are careful, it is still slick a lot of the times, even if it has been worked over, you'll need to be very careful. Looks like we might get a lot of ice on thursday evening, and into friday morning, I'll try to post on twitter and on OAF as soon as I get to the shop on friday, I'll make it if it is possible at all to get there There is nothing in the park open on sunday, everything is closed. I'll be open at 10 and close at 1 if there is nobody in the park I'll fish and then not even open, and just go home when I'm done fishing good luck and be careful comming down this weekend.
  11. Got your PM sent info to you.
  12. Yes they are really nice for the price, and very functional
  13. I'm a little late on this conversation, but the guys told you right on everything. glo-balls, chamois and san juan worms, buggers(olive, brown, and black) have all been good. Caddis, blue wing olives, crackle backs, adams, and griffiths gnats have all been working. Copper johns, zebra midges, pheasant tails, burlaps, sow bugs, hares ears, brassies and about any small(#16) and smaller are working very well. Good luck.
  14. Here is the one I got, they are all over e-bay, I'm sure they are for sale other places. That frog wouldn't move and it showed me it's fangs once, but it was so fast I couldn't get a pic of the fangs http://cgi.ebay.com/Stealth-Cam-LLC-Epic-Game-Cameras-Combo-Kit-Video-Cam_W0QQitemZ220542496971QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item33595b70cb
  15. Had a good day on Capps, went to the lower bridge and walked upstream from there, made it to the big hole a 1/4 above the bridge and there were people comming down the creek so I went back to the car, but caught some nice fish, one nice litte brown and 6 rainbows, all about average 12-14" all in good shape and all fought very well. I also seen one of the saber toothed frogs, that are known in that area
  16. Bonefish was florida or Belize or maybe mexico, snapper was probably caught in florida, not sure which pic you were looking at

  19. No the patch is perfectly aligned, it is on the pack that is against your chest, it is supposed to be on the outside of the pack so you can see the label when you are wearing the pac, the patch on the back part of the pack is on correctly, the bag is perfect.
  20. I got a bunch of Orvis packs in that are miss labled, the orvis patch is in the wrong place and Orvis doesn't want them back, retail is 98.00 I'm getting rid of them for 49.00 just trying to get my money back. here is a link to the type of pack I have. I'll offer free shipping inside the CONUS Thanks for looking. http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=0A4Y&dir_id=758&group_id=781&cat_id=5093&subcat_id=6670
  21. Flow is good, not high, did not see a spawning fish or any beds, I would say the spawn has come and gone on Crane this year, I seen plenty of fish of spawning size and they are all holding in deeper water now. I was fishing above town, I'm going below town today or tomorrow.
  22. I see you are in the St. Louis area, give mill creek a try, it has the same strain of trout in it that crane does(McLoud river trout) I've had some good days on mill creek, it is just far enough away that I only get up there maybe 2 or 3 times a year, last year I made it up there only twice.
  23. Catching fish on Crane, had a good day, caught this one with the cam going, didn't catch a bunch but saw some real hogs today, broke a rod and lost a pair of forceps, it was the perfect day.
  24. How will the smaller eyes perform in cold weather(ice) and what will they do better than the other style of guide, other than lighter weight. They look neat.
  25. Lots of fish in the river, fished a few hrs yesterday, landed 24, sunday landed 20 in about the same time period, fri and sat fished a bit, but it was bitter cold, but still caught several every morning. Still some nice fish in the river, caught a 6lb rainbow on sat. morning. egg patterns, zebra midges, copper johns, are good right now, still catching a few on drys almost everyday, adams, blue wing olives, caddis, cracklebacks, and griffiths gnats are doing best for me, #16's and smaller on drys and nymphs.
