Great fishing this morning, caught 8, 5 on beetles, and 3 on a chaomis worms. The beetles were big, #10's and the chamoiis worms I tie on a #14 usually. The river was great this morning, the C&R area was empty.

I spend about 10-15 minutes per hole, unless I'm getting a lot of action. If I'm only hitting the riffles, about 10 minutes per hole unless I'm fishing for a particular fish. Your missing the boat not fishing dries very often, sometimes you can do very well on drys, but nymphs will usually get your #'s for the day, but on good afternoon of fishing dries, I can usually draw 10 or so up for a bite, sometimes twice that many. I got you PM, and have sent you a PM back.

practice, practice, practice, and it will happen one of these days. Do you move around a lot, or fish the same area most of the day ? I find moving around a lot helps. I fished this morning and had 5 trout in about an hour of fishing, caught them all on a #16 olive/grizzly crackleback, I fished it dry and fished it in the film, both ways caught them. What flies do you fish most of the time, what sizes ? PM me for more info, I'll help you catch 25 trout in an 8 hr day.

I like a 6' 5wt for crane, glass is so forgiving and it protects your tippets well. I also sell several glass rods a year, they are wonderful to cast. I don't like a glass rod over 7 1/2 feet, to me they feel a bit tip heavy then. We keep them in the shop and people love the way they feel.

Chris, I use the Whiting farms saddle hackles when tying the #14 and #16 baby buggers. Some of the better metz saddles are small enough, but I use the Whiting farms stuff most of the time.

Those are just little 1/100 mini jigs, the young lady that lives next door to the shop the shop ties them for me.

I remember leonard showing me that pattern years before Michael started fishing it around here.

Roaring River In Great Shape Dry Fly Fishing Everyday
timsfly replied to timsfly's topic in Roaring River State Park
there is a lot of swimming areas in the river to cool off during the mid day heat come by when you hit the area and I'll send you to a cool place below the park if you want to be by yourselves, or there won't be many there usually -
The river is still in great shape, an inch of rain or so this weekend didn't do a thing to change the river. Flow is still about normal and the river is mostly clear, about 6' of visibility. Dry fly fishing has been really good this week, we are catching them on hoppers, beetles, crickets, ants cracklebacks, adams, caddis, griffiths gnats, tricos, and blue wing olives. 7X tippet for drys and for best results don't use the fluorocarbon when fishing drys. Nymph fishing is as good as ever, a tung headed rootbeer, pheasant tail, burlap, sow bug, chamois worm san juan worm copper johns and zebra midges are all working well, I'm using #16 and #18 drys and nymphs most of the time right now. Woolybuggers are still working well, I like the larger #8's early in the morning and in the afternoons and evenings I'll use the smaller baby buggers, tan, black, olive and brown are working best right now. If you use marabou jigs, black/yellow, tan, white, brown, and olive are working very well right now. 1/32 size and smaller are best right now. Power eggs in orange, white, hatch brown and flo. yellow are best right now. Plastic worms in cheese yellow, white, orange/white, orange, mint green and pink are all working well right now. The water is very clear now so use the 2lb maxima, p-line or vanish for your best chance of catching trout right now. Stay away from lines that are blue, white or fluorescent, and braids are bad in the clear water also. Small crankbaits will catch fish all day long and so will small gold spoons right now. Good reports comming out of zone 3, several reported good limits on power bait and night crawlers. Good luck on the river this week. Tim's Fly Shop

Michael might be hiring full time help.

Tricks till 9:00a.m. Every morning. Bring caddis Adams, B.W.Os cracklebacks have been good. Beetles, ants, & June bugs have all been good.
-
Nice fish, you really should fish more, did you go to flat creek on sunday ?
-
It is not bad, my wife and I were down there till about 7:30 last night, not many people around when we left out of the park. The campgrounds were full, and it has been busy most days, but thru the week it won't be to bad in the evening.

Yes, 7-5 but I'm there earlier sometimes, but never there after 5:00

For Roaring River: Elk hair caddis 14-18's, adams 14-18's, griffiths gnats 18-22's, blue wing olives 16-22's I've been catching a few on these dries, beetles, ants, and light colored cracklebacks have been good also the past week. Small bead head nymphs, copper johns, pheasant tails, caddis larva, zebra midges, and sow bugs have all been good. Glo-balls, san juan worms, thread jigs, grubs have all been good, fished about 24-36" under a float. the water is still up a bit, but clearing everyday, you can see 5 to 6' into the water when the sun is up, if you have a good pair of glasses. Most of the dries I've been using have been 16's, but you can get them to hit the #14 in the eve. I find when the sun has been up on high, the smaller sizes have been working well. Bring the usual buggers in sizes #8- #14's as these have been most of the year.

We are very lucky, the water is still in good shape, we had a bit of rain over the weekend, but nothing that effected the river, the river is back to the levels that we had in march and is clearing. the dry fly fishing has really improved the past few days, we started doing much better on beetles, ants, cracklebacks, adams, lt. cahills, and we are catching few on stimulators. Use 7X when fishing dries and 9' leaders would be best, most of the drys I'm fishing are #16 and smaller, but a # 14 will work in the evenings ok, sometimes. Nymph fishing is as good as ever, copper johns, pheasant tails, zebra midges, larva lace midges, sowbugs, scuds, and burlaps have all been good this week, about any small nymph will work, #16's and smaller, I seem to do better with grays, black, olives, and brown nymphs, most of the time. Micro eggs, san juan worms, chamois worms, micro jigs, and small lead head grubs worked very well for a lot of people this past week, most fished them 18"-36" under an indicator. Large woolybuggers, and streamers are still working well, black, brown, olive, tan and white have all been good this past week. If you are fishing a spinning rod, then powerbait eggs are the best way to catch a fast limit, orange, white, flo. yellow and pink have been good colors all week. Powerbait worms are good also, cheese yellow, white, orange, and orange peel, have been best this past week. Gold spoons, black, skunk, brown and flo. orange spinners have all been good also. Marabou jigs in 1/32nd and 1/16th are still working well, dark colors have been best, black, black/yellow, olive, and dk. brown, in the mornings I seem to do better on white jigs, I think because I can see them better. Zone 3 fished very well for a few anglers, I sold a lot of nightcrawlers this weekend and had several good reports of nice fish being caught out of zone 3. Water is still dirty, not muddy, and it is clearing quickly, so the use of 2 or 3 lb line is highly recommended, good luck on the river this week. Tim's Fly Shop

I throw a 3" zoom minnow on my 5wt sometimes also, sometimes the bass and bluegill just like plastic better. I fish all kinds of stuff on my fly rods, I'll fish what ever is working I'll look into the fly info you have on the last message. I have tied small wood chopper type plug flies out of deer hair, foam cylinders, and balsa wood, I put a small blade at each end and a bead on there so they will spin freely, but I just liek the teeny torpedo in frog color sometimes.
-
I just usually have one rod when I'm in my 10' canoe, and I can throw a teeny just fine on the 5 wt, If I was going to throw the teeny for an extended period of time I would use my ultralight, but I just throw it once in awhile. I was catching a lot more fish on soft foam poppers and clouser minnows.
-
I've been doing well on big sunfish using clouser minnows and small pine squirrel rubber legged flies, in the chartruse color. I caught several on thursday using a popper, and even caught a few on a teeny torpedo, I fish the teeny torpedos on my 5 wt fly rod, just got to open the loop a bit, so you don't hit yourself in the head LOL I even managed to catch this nice 18" largemouth, I caught several over 15".

Wow, we mssed a big one, sorry for everyone that had damage, sounded like it was nasty, north and south of the park. The river didn't come up at all, if fact it is still falling a bit everyday, looking good for kids day. Bring the little ones down sat. kids day will be fun, and exciting for everyone. The hatchery will provide, bait, hooks, line, sinkers and they have some rods and reels for day use if you forget to bring one with you. Jerry Dean works his hind end off to make this thing great for the kids, so come down and help out, the hatchery will stock the river several times a day, and there will be lots of big over 3lb fish in the water, and a few over 6lbs or so I was told. So the water is fine, you have no excuse for bringing the kids down, the lawn will wait. See ya on the water
-
The area from the hatchery down to the low water bridge below the lodge is usually roped off for kids only(kids 15 and younger) The whole park can be fished for free all day long for kids under 15, I think you have to get the special tag at the hatchery for kids. The Hatchery will provide bait and they have lots of rods and reels for loan. Come on down and have fun, it is just a hoot to watch the kids.
-
I talked to one of the hatchery guys yesterday, there will be 30 lunkers put out for kids day 3-6 pound fish, they are expecting a good turn out, so there will be as many as 3000 trout stocked thru out the day. Bring the kids down and have some fun. The river is getting better everyday. It dropped a full foot over the weekend, and got much clearer.

River is back to where it was before the first rains came, still above normal a bit and still cloudy. To anyone that stopped by today, I'm sorry I wasn't there, had to make a run to the St. John's ER. But don't you worry I'll live Just won't be able to cast for a week or so, drat. We caugth nice fish on black, brown, olive and purple woolybuggers, one lady brought in a nice 5 3/4 lb rainbow on sat, it will make a great mount, she caught it on a purple bugger, she also caught some on a pink woolybugger I tied up for her, I was tying her flies on # 8 TMC 300 hooks, with a tungsten cone(med) and lead wire(.25) on the hook almost down to the bend of the hook, she was getting on the bottom, but she was catching fish everyday. Glo-balls, san juan worms, copperjohns, brassies, flashback hares ears, and pheasant tails were all good this week. Just your regular run of the mill #10 marabou streamer fished with 2 BB shot did well for a few of the guys, olive, black, and salmon seemed to be the colors that were working best. Water clarity is about 2 feet right now, except up by the hatchery, the top pool is very clear compared to the rest of the river, and it has been fishing good for guys that are sight fishing, and I've seen a few fish rising there also. I've seen a few fish rising and have talked to a few customers that said they were catching a trout now and again on a beetle, black, and the june bug colors were best. Chartruse grubs, thread jigs, and fur bugs were working well, fished about 3 feet under a 3/4" teardrop float, and we were adding a B or a BB shot a foot above them to get them down fast. If the rains stay away, the river should be in great shape next week for kids day. For more info call me at the shop, bring you kid down and have some fun, all bait is provided and there will be rods and reels for boys and girls that didn't bring one with them.
