  1. Wait Wait Wait.....I "did" do something that may be questionable to PETA in this photo.....I was casting to deer in the field going into Meramec SP
  2. If you are talking about the Missouri Trout Odyssey's here are the links to Matt's site with the report, video, and photos for every day...... Missouri Trout Odyssey Day One: http://ozarkchronicles.com/archives/786 Missouri Trout Odyssey Day Two: http://ozarkchronicles.com/archives/812 Missouri Trout Odyssey Day Three: http://ozarkchronicles.com/archives/876 Missouri Trout Odyssey Day Four: http://ozarkchronicles.com/archives/884 Missouri Trout Odyssey Day Five: http://ozarkchronicles.com/archives/941 Ok, so there are a TON of photos there...maybe 30 minutes of video. Show me a redd.
  3. WOW.....what?? I do not fish for or guide for fish on redds....at all. It is as easy as saying "ok, see those redds...don't cast to them"
  4. LOADED question....but dead on the money. I could write for days on streamers and ramble and ramble and ramble so I will make this as short as possible. My main thing about streamers is everyone thinks there are all these rules to fishing them. It HAS to be cloudy, raining, and generally horrid weather for fish to eat streamers......WHAT?!?!?! There are no rules, period. So keeping that in mind lets check this out. Just like in all the other types of fishing we do, we have to cover as much water as possible...fishing every, square inch of the stream isn't always practical but ideal none-the-less. So in and around riffles are awesome to fish streamers and some of these flies will fish a riffle better than others on any given day. Completely dead-drifting these big, articulated patterns is a great way to cover water and sometimes hook those fish that will simply not move an inch to eat. I like the Peanut Envy, Circus Peanut, Dungeon, Butt Monkey, and Bottoms Up for dead drifting or drifting with a twitch (the Bottoms Up is CRAZY for twitching.) Frog water is typically a toss up and usually not water I tend to hang on for a long time, move through it with a few flies like the Peanut Envy, Circus Peanut, Dungeon, Butt Monkey, and Bottoms Up. Tailouts are awesome, period and typically where we hook a lot of the big fish we catch on the NFOW. There is so much going on in a tailout with drop-offs, structure, eddies, and just general goodness that you need to be versatile so toss flies like Peanut Envy, Circus Peanut, Dungeon, Butt Monkey, and Bottoms Up. Notice anything? All of those flies will work anywhere.....it just depends on what you do with them to fish the differing kinds of water. I usually give a fly a couple of good runs and if it doesn't get any action I will switch color, couple more good runs and no action I will switch flies.
  5. Exactly. Not trying to sound all "high and mighty" here but the NFOW has no choice but for the spawn to work......the rainbows don't get a second chance and it kind of sucks when someone so close (i.e. the Spring River) is profitting from the rainbows in spawn. All that does is show everyone how NOT to 1. Handle Spawning Fish, 2. Take care of your resource, and 3. Do wild fisheries anything but harm. (Sorry if I get on a soapbox here but we had a nice little conversation on Facebook about this and the photos of redds they were posting that they were playing off as a dinnerbell sign.) The Spring River is a great fishery and I, personally like fishing it....there are a TON of stockers in that river to eat and mess with and big fish to catch................but this is the only time of year you ever see photos of the big fish from the Spring River which is a shame.
  6. It's actually really good stuff, a little thicker and more course than fly shop wool.....I'm just saying, think of the markup and marketing opportunities of Sunburst wool.
  7. Story of my life.....
  8. That was a #2 Gamakatsu B10s. The Butt Monkey is crazy easy. I personally don't think I trimmed the head on that one 'quite' enough but it worked. Depending on the type of #4 hook you are using I would probably stick to another #4 for the back if you are really wanting to use a #4. I would probably suggest going a little bigger on the lead hook though. Seriously, I have caught young of the year rainbows (around 5") on the North Fork of the White on a #2 B10s or that TMC 8089....they will hook all sizes of fish. I meant to say that wool has a pretty personal NFOW touch already Justin.....that is Amy Spencer Special North Fork of the White Sunburst Wool, which I am sure can be found at the Dead Drift Fly Shop at Sunburst. (and if it isn't available, tell Amy it needs to be!)
  9. Good, I was wondering about that. Thanks guys!
  10. Hey guys, Again, getting ready to drop this pattern on my site but thought I would give you guys a peak at it first. Rear Hook: Mustad 34011 #4 Thread: Black Undertail: Marabou Body: Estaz Overtail/Body: Rabbit Zonker Articulation: Beadalon Spacers: Glass Beads Lead Hook: Gamakatsu B10s Eyes: Painted Lead Eyes (attached to the UNDER side of the hook) Body: Estaz Gills: Lazer Dub Head: Wool I have substitued Lazer Dub for the wool on the head.....it gives a really cool look, and trims to shape just like wool does. I doubt it would move quite as much water as wool but if you are looking to add more flash to the head Lazer Dub is a good way to go.
  11. NICE! Keep some of that Lazer Dub around.....I am getting ready to post the Butt Monkey and have used the Lazer Dub instead of wool with GREAT success. The 3366's are defenitely more cheap, no doubt about it. I tend to tell people to think of big streamers as an investment because chances are you will have them for a looong time. Keep up the good work!
  12. Oh! HAHA! The Hang Time could be worth around $327.33 on the black (read black as "hair") market.....give or take a few pennies.
  13. Materials on the Wedding Crasher would be comparable to a Red Fox Squirrel Nymph. Marabou Tail, Wire Rib, Hare Dubbing Body, Sili Legs, Partridge Collar (I think anyway), Hare Dubbing over the head, and finishing it off with a hot spot of Glo-Brite thread. With the exception of the Dohiku hook, they are pretty close to everyday materials. Radioactive Gerbil....
  14. Exactly....just glad there isn't one right way to do everything, how boring would that be?
  15. With all due respect I do have to disagree with the hook up percentage on the 8089np. We are both pretty lucky that we get to fish quite a bit and feel out all of these hooks before we throw it on a clients rod. But I have talked to a LOT of streamer tyers and hard-core streamer freaks that love that hook.....and in talking to the fish, they tend to be a too little sore-lipped to say too much. I personally believe the Gamakatsu B10s is a better hook but it doesn't work for me on the Circus Peanut, just doesn't allow enough material to get that sexy Peanut (probably the first time the words "sexy" and "peanut" have been typed together ) movement in the water. Same for the S. Dungeon. These new low profile hooks are the craziest sharp hooks ever made....and they are SUPER STRONG. Super sharp doesn't mean brittle anymore, nor does it mean they are going to break. As for the hooks on the commercially tied flies. 95% of the commercially tied flies are tied on the cheapest hooks the manufacturers can get away with (this doesn't go for "commercial tiers" that tie 10,000 flies per year for local shops, this goes for the flies people seriously buy). Galloup has even said the hooks on the commercially tied Dungeon are crap (he used a different word but I won't type it here ) No hook gap will hook fish.....but it won't hold them. A Sharp hook with a good gap will hook quicker, and deeper and then hold them there.....they are almost lassoed for lack of a better term.
  16. NICE! Should do a simple Wooly Bugger or something like that! Thanks for the kind words....and I noticed a long time ago, when you get a lot of people that REALLY like what you do....there will be haters, no big deal and it's not personal. Haters just give more views to videos! Jeremy, I said a while ago that I am not into teaching fly tying with these videos. There are a massive group of accomplished fly tyers that may not know exactly how to tie a Butt Monkey for instance...they know how to palmer hackle, tie in zonker strips, stack wool, whip finish, etc....but they have never tied a Butt Monkey and they don't want to sit through 3, 9 minute videos to see how to tie it. I will be the first to say that I have watched your videos and have publicly said that, although your reputation proceeds you, I personally think you are one of the best streamer tyers in Missouri and Arkansas...yeah, I said it but it is obvious that you and I are after a totally different audience with our videos. I totally go for entertainment and quality video, with a side of teaching. I'm defenitely not "showing off" or boasting about what I can do with these videos....VERY rarely do you ever see my face and I never talk so I don't come off like I am a know it all that talks through the whole video.
  17. I can't stand boring videos and refuse to make boring videos....watching a guy talk and explain his day of fishing or watching someone talk about how to wind thread on a hook is bleeding boring to me. On Youtube you can actually 'see' when people click off of your videos and go watch something else...and if you make a boring video for people to learn from and they click off of your 9 minute video within the first 2 or 3 minutes....what did you teach that person?
  18. Just measured the hook gap of the Size 2 8089 and it is half an inch.....if a fish can't open it's mouth half an inch it doesn't need to eat this fly.............
  19. Hey guys, I have the Peanut Envy, S. Dungeon, a spin on the Barely Legal, Butt Monkey, and the Bottom's Up all coming over the next few months. After that I am going to start on Mike Schmidt's patterns which, rest assured, are as good and better than Galloup's flies. So there will be videos well through next Spring at least. Also working on doing a little streamer fishing video on the North Fork of the White....trying to get more people to take streamer trips as it is all I am thinking about when I am in the boat. Don't get me wrong, nymphing under an indicator is a great way to catch fish.....but a Thingamabobber doesn't move in the water like these streamers, and you see it ALL when you are in the bow of a drift boat pulling streamers---it will make you dream about it. If you think about any flies for sure let me know!
  20. I like it better that way too Dave.
  21. Gamakatsu B10s!!!!! I swear, if you look at the 8089np or the B10s wrong.....your fingers will bleed automatically. You will run into a lot of smashing takes with very few hookups on a fishery like the White. What happens is a stocker decides he wants to naw on something 1/2 it's size. Most of the time if a "real" fish is going to eat it....there is no stopping it, unless the fisherman does something stupid like setting the hook when they see a big fish open its mouth.........or is it just me that does that?
  22. Hey guys, This is copied from a blog post that is going to go on my site tomorrow. I thought since you guys helped me with some great ideas that I would put it on here before it hit my site. Kelly Galloup's Articulated Circus Peanut is the kick-off video of the Galloup line of streamers that I am going to cover for the next couple months or so. These articulated patterns are typically a LOT easier than they look and, quite frankly, if you can tie a Wooly Bugger you can pretty much tie most of Galloup's articulated patterns. It is pretty obvious I don't tie these "exactly" the way you will buy them at your local fly shop. The main thing you will notice is I use top-grade hooks. A big streamer pattern has to be able to hold a big fish....period--and a wide-gapped hook will do that better than the average, every-day Wooly Bugger hook. Also, I have updated the materials a bit. The UV Estaz is awesome and literally shines at night. Without further ado.....Kelly Galloup's Articulated Circus Peanut (full material list below) Make sure to watch in HD Trailer Hook: Mustad 34011 Size 4 Tail: Marabou Hackle: Semi-Webby Saddle Body: Estaz (in this case Estaz Lights UV) "Legs": Crazy Legs Articulated Connection: Beadalon Spacer: Glass Beads Lead Hook: TMC 8089 Size 2 Eyes: Painted Lead Hackle: Same as above, slightly larger (or Schlappeh) Body: Same as above
  23. No, no...not the point I was trying to make. A rainbow spraying eggs all over the place, obviously pulled off of a redd and one guys walking through redds while he is landing a fish.......It's pretty obvious those guys just need to be informed or "edu-ma-cated" you might say. Is one of them a guide? I would personally hope a fly fishing guide would inform those guys to keep "his" river as awesome as it can be -- as guides are just as big of a resource for conservation as AGFC or MDC. I understand that it is seriously cool to catch a 22" rainbow, and that is one really nice fish (although I would bet my life and well being that it isn't over 5 pounds, much less anywhere near 10) but smashing through redds and spraying eggs all over the place like it was a Super Soaker isn't cool, especially since there is probably more rainbow trout spawn success in the Spring River than anywhere else in Arkansas.
  24. The fish shouldn't be too hard to see because they will be sitting right in the middle of a big circle of really clean rock called a redd. Especially all of those 10 pound fish......I need those guys around to guess the size of the fish I have caught!!
  25. Yeah! Ok, getting some ideas now. I am thinking, all but one of the Galloup line of flies I am going to do are articulated so I will slow it down (and literally maybe even go slow-mo at points) during the articulation. I literally held the materials in front of the camera for around 15 seconds so most of those will have around 3-4 seconds of "screen time" so I will see if that is quite long enough. Also, these will be a full blog post on my site with a full list of materials so I will copy/paste that info here too. Also, going to show an angle of these flies that I haven't seen before......... OzarkAnglers input project! Thanks guys!
