  1. Hey guys, Just threw together 2012 "Greatest Hits" Video. I kind of feel like 2012 was the year of making do with what you have. Early in the year (winter) was great, we caught big fish on big streamers pretty much every-other trip. Spring was when things started to change, we never got a real big push of water and the old timers talked about how dry the Spring was.....then Summer hit and we were in a complete drought before we knew it. On a chance warm-water fishing trip with my brother-in-law he hooked a really, really large gar (over 6') just when I was thinking the Summer was a total loss. Turns out this probably made my entire year, I probably had the most fun chasing those crazy prehistoric fish than any other time last year. Some late Summer/Early Fall rain brought a really nice Fall to us just in time for the Fall guiding season, and I ended the year on the whirlwind trip to 20 of Missouri's Trout Streams (Missouri Trout Odyssey III). Here is the 2012 Greatest Hits Video, hope you enjoy.
  2. The Marabou can be tricky when you are palmering 2 different plumes at the same time to get that mottled effect. It is actually easier to strip the bottom of the stem clean of any feathers and wrap them from there as the fibers on the top of the stem want to get trapped under the wraps, but if you take your time you can make sure all of the feathers are not getting trapped.
  3. GREAT idea! Let me know how it goes threading the helmet over the bend, because it seems to me that you are on to something.
  4. Hey guys, The newest video in the Rich Strolis Series is the Headbanger Sculpin. Keeping up with Rich on Facebook he is TEARING IT UP with these things. I do feel like there has to be a warning with these things though....they aren't for the faint of heart and you better wear a helmet when you fish them but they go straight to the bottom and stay there....just like a sculpin should. Recipe: Hook - Gamakatsu SL11 #2 Flash - Holographic Flashabou Tail - Marabou (2 colors, palmered) Hackle - Schlappen Body - Cactus Chenille Rubber Legs Wing - Craft Fur (Strolis calls for Arctic Fox) Front Hook: Hook - Gamakatsu B10s #1 Flash Tail - Marabou Hackle - Schlappen Body - Cactus Chenille Rubber Legs Wing - Craft Fur Collar - Laser Dub Head - Sculpin Helmet Top it off with Clear Cure Goo Hydro
  5. He is going to hand me my hat SEVERAL times during my lifetime.
  6. No, I have 3 cameras I work with. A point and shoot style 720p camera, a GoPro, and a DSLR. I shoot the tying videos with the DSLR.
  7. Great job!
  8. Thanks so much for all the kind words fellas. Have some plans to venture out of my comfort level with these videos...if I can do what I want to do I should have a little docu/video sometime in 2013. I use a program called Powerdirector from Cyberlink. It is VERY affordable and puts videos together nicely. It is totally meant for beginners but has some upper-level abilities too...I really like it. I 'do' use After Effects for color-grading though. This is what gives the "look" that I shoot for (besides the camera-work itself) and is not very user friendly. I ONLY color-grade on it so I haven't scratched the surface of what it can do.
  9. Agreeeed
  10. I hit a point where I literally started laughing and shaking my head on the North Fork of the White one day because I realized that I hadn't taught him much of anything in the last few months......he simply does it, and makes it look easy. I 'do' hold all the power though......I still tie all of his knots. I have to say that I have been pretty patient with him and little brother (for the most part) but I don't know about teaching knots to kids. Thanks for the kind words guys, it is fun riding on my childs coattails.
  11. Hey guys, Continuing the Seasonal videos....here is the Fall, 2012 recap.
  12. They are really, really cool and very easy to work with.
  13. Exactly. Rainbows are dumb....thank God.
  14. Not a fan of Flouro....I have obsessive compulsive issues with knots and they have to seat perfectly for me to fish them and I hate the way flouro knots. I am a huge fan of Maxima for big stuff (streamer fishing) and Rio for nymphing. Maxima knots so well and so smoothly it's crazy and I will use it in the 4lb for nymphing on occasion too.
  15. Rich's patterns are awesome. I am in the middle of covering them now.
  16. For sure. Not the targeted species, but we do catch plenty of rainbows on big streamers.
  17. Hey guys, The second video in the Rich Strolis Series is his Bloodied Baitfish. Now and then I will back off and throw a single-hook streamer in the mix just to change it up, but I really do believe that, with the explosion of articulated streamers in the last few years that a solid single hooked streamer is overlooked FAR too often. This pattern fits the bill for 90% of the baitfish in most streams, color combinations are limitless so tie them to suit your local baitfish or go with attractor colors, you can't go wrong. Recipe: Hook - 4x long down eye streamer Tail - Marabou over Ice Dub Wing - Rabbit Strip Body - Flat Diamond Braid Rib - Red Wire Throat - Ice Dub Eyes - Clear Cure Dumbell Eyes
  18. Thanks! I actually had a hard time even going with such a long video....but that fly is sick and you have seen that Rainbows will eat it even when you are not ready for them to (like when you pull spool off of your reel)
  19. Very Cool! Great Job.
  20. Pretty, spawned out fish!
  21. That 'ol boy is fishy....period. He is a blast to spend a day on the water with! Great report.
  22. You would make a great MDC employee Justin.
  23. Turns out MDC cancelled their October shocking because of low water......only to come and shock mid last week. Thanks for the heads up MDC.....
