  1. I usually have at least a small 'tweak' that I do with these flies and that Craft Fur is pretty big (in my mind at least). With it reverse-tied, you should see it flare in the water. That stuff pulsates with every strip. Absolutely no offense to Rich in his design but I didn't see where the dubbing loop and a smaller "cone" on the head would help the fly, mostly because once the Lazer Dub gets real wet it lays pretty flat anyway so I just keep stacking it to the eye.
  2. TOTALLY agreed!!!! That is awesome! Great, Great idea with the marabou poked in there...absolutely awesome.
  3. This whole weekend was slow. Had a couple of guys that wanted to go hero or zero with big streamers and we only turned a couple of fish....and they didn't have any real desire to eat when they turned.
  4. Hey guys, kicking off a new series with fly tyer Rich Strolis. I have been pretty excited about this one for a while. I have fished the Hog Snare for around a year and have hung some really, really nice fish on them. The action in the water is phenominal and will defenitely keep your attention. Recipe: Rear Hook Hook - Gamakatsu B10s #2 Tail - Marabou Hackle - Schlappen Body - Ice Dub Rubber Legs Wing - Craft Fur(or Artic Fox) Middle Hook: Hook - Fish Skull Articulated Shank 35mm Tail - Marabou Hackle - Schlappen Body - Ice Dub Rubber Legs Wing - Craft Fur (or Arctic Fox) Front Hook: Hook - Gamakatsu B10s Tail - Marabou Hackle - Schlappen Body - Ice Dub Rubber Legs Wing - Craft Fur (or Arctic Fox )Eyes - Painted Lead Eyes Head - Laser Dub
  5. Agreeeeed.
  6. Hmm, it is a Sage TCR 7wt strung with a Hatch reel and Rio Density Compensated line.....and I put in at Kelly and floated to James. (this is me taking a TOTAL stab in the dark that my dream set-up was lost on the river and I am trying to claim it)
  7. Streamer fishing is more water based than pattern based for sure. But I tend to lean toward Dungeons in White, Yellow, Natural, and Olive -- Hog Snares in White/yellow, Rust/Olive, and Tan/White -- Ice Picks in White/Yellow, Olive/Black, Rust/Olive. Obviously, streamer fishing is simply getting a fly in the face of the right fish at the right time. No real "pattern" because you are looking for a knee-jerk reaction from a large predator instead of trying to feed it.
  8. I saw one on the NFOW 2 days after they were added to the Endangered Species list. Almost stepped on one on high water a few years ago too. Very cool things to watch.
  9. I was actually sent some streamers that are tied in the Hollow style a little while back. I don't want to say they were completely Hollow style but they are a marriage of Hollow and Intruder style articulated Streamers.........and they are AWESOME. They are really, really big so I haven't had good water to fish them on the NFOW yet but I did swim them a little on the White and got a couple of great looks. They are are all of 9" long but they cast SO EASILY because they are so sparse, yet they hold their profile really well. And the reversed bucktail was tied more in the Hollow manner than the "reverse tied" bucktail. To me, thin clumps of materials = Hollow Style, Thick clumps of materials = Reversed. I am sure there are exceptions though. I subscribed to your channel while I was there, cool stuff!
  10. Hey Steve, Absolutely no worries! That is a crazy-good point and one that I had never really thought of to be honest. I use both, in their own specific way......In my eyes (which are really bad without my contacts in) the Popovics style of Hollow Flies and the Reverse tying are two completely different techniques. Popovics' method is used a lot more for stacking bucktail in several spots down the hook shank in small clumps holding that "hollow" look without adding so much bulk in one spot that you lose that Hollow look. When I start talking "Reverse Tying" I think of large clumps meant to make a head-type of profile and add bulk in one spot. The Hollow Style wouldn't be able to get the same thing done as the Reverse style if you are using a bunch of bucktail (without adding a TON of thread wraps) and the Reverse Style wouldn't have as much flare control as the Hollow style if you are using smaller clumps. TOTALLY the way I look at it and by all means, I am FAAAAAR from an expert.
  11. Rich is the next tyer that I am going to cover in the videos. Be looking for the Hog Snare to kick it off in a couple of weeks. I have fished that fly more than any other fly over the last 6 months.
  12. My wife shot this the other day on a family float.....absolutely NO post processing was done to these photos other than her stitching them together. Gorgeous.
  13. HAHAHA!! That's what it looks like! Crap! No, the fibers from that Icelandic Sheep where EVERYWHERE....no on wants to breathe those things in.
  14. Ending the Mike Schmidt Series of flies.....The Reaper. Now, I appologize for this not being articulated -- but to make up for that the fly is tied on an 8/0 Gama. Recipe: Hook -- 8/0 Gamakatsu SL12 Tail 1 -- Flash Blend Flash -- Holographic Flashabou Tail 2 -- Icelandic Sheep Flash -- Pearl Flashabou Tail 3 -- Icelandic Sheep Head -- Bucktail Eyes -- Clear Cure Eyes Finish off the head with Clear Cure Goo
  15. Totally weird question but I am wondering how wide across the beam are most 16' Bass Boats?
  16. EXACTLY how I talk about how Rio Gold fishes. Loads VERY well in the air but floats so high that it feels super light when it is on the water.
  17. Rio Grand is a half-size heavier too. I am a huge fan of Rio Grand and Rio Gold along with SA GPX for floating lines. GPX is the only line that I have fished from SA that I really, really like.
  18. I use 3 different video cameras. All of the underwater stuff is shot with a GoPro.
  19. Definitely not a stupid question. I use LONG nose pliers and gloves......it isn't easy for sure.
  20. I love the Clymb! I actually bought the Redington CPX Vest on this deal......at a better price than my Pro Staff price with Redington, Rio, and Sage. Sizes are usually the hardest part about the Clymb, but it turned out that a Medium in that vest was the only size they offered, and exactly what I needed--for once.
  21. I saw that! They have picked up the last couple of my seasonal videos, not sure if it will be on Friday or not....either way I think it is pretty cool! Thanks for the kind words guys!
  22. I am using 3 cameras actually. Pretty much the only time I use the GoPro anymore is for underwater, but I will set it up sometimes. I use 2 different editing programs. I color-grade in Adobe After Effects and edit in Powerdirector 10.
  23. Which made for GREAT video!
  24. Geez, I know. I had to listen to myself say that over, and over, and over while I was editing the video.......I suck.
  25. Yup, nylon rop with some CCG Eyes and a CCG Head. At first, I used a little bit of a "bite tippet" that was 10-12" of real heavy mono....but ended up just going with straight 10lb Maxima. The only one that I broke off broke off at the tippet knot. The teeth are pretty far away from the line once they get tangled real well, but I could see breaking one off every once in a while. Agreeeeed. I had it really good though, these fish had moved into a hole on the Bryant that was only around 1/8th of a mile--and there were TONS of them. It was crazy. The thing that I don't understand -- they simply turned off. Earlier in the Summer they would cruise, gulp air, and hang there for a little bit giving you PLENTY of time to make a cast. The later in the Summer it got, they would gulp air and keep cruising or go right back down and you literally had a couple of seconds to make the cast (at most) and sometimes you had to throw a cast 50' in that short amount of time...and it had to be dead on the money. Justin hooked a REALLY big fish right next to the boat, it just happend to come up right in line with where he was stripping the fly back, it looked, I said "twitch it", and it ate. VERY cool.
