  1. I would put Hardy well above Orvis for craftsmanship but all manufacturers carry high end rods and lower end rods and it really depends on which you are looking at.
  2. :secret-laugh: :secret-laugh:
  3. I seriously appreciate it. It all started right here with you guys so you guys will always get the first shot at seeing it.
  4. Thanks! The DD has worked for trout (of course), white bass, largemouth, and spotted bass so far--guarantee smallies will eat these things!
  5. Laser Dub....greatest stuff ever. I have a package of every color they make. If it bulked just a little better I would never use wool again.
  6. I know....that dude ties a TON of flies. If you haven't checked out his blog--you need to. http://www.anglersch...s.blogspot.com/ While you are there you will without a doubt see a fly called the Meal Ticket. I have already shot the video for that fly and I have to say....probably the coolest video I have done to date.
  7. My next anchor. Do they tend to have some in stock Larry?
  8. Well played guys....WELL played!
  9. I hear that guy is super cool.....but crazy short.
  10. Like you, I have only fished the Chubby Muffin a couple of times and can't really say that I have had a ton of luck on it. BUT, I don't hold anything against ANY pattern that I haven't fished hard for a long time--if a Chubby Muffin lands on the head of a giant brown....it is going to be eaten. I tied bucktail Clousers for a long time too and then I had Kyle Kosovich throw an EP Fiber Clouser in my hand and I haven't tied any more out of bucktail since. Totally personal preference, I like the fact that I can get that slightly transparent look with EP that I can't with bucktail. But has a bucktail Clouser caught around 2 billion percent more fish than an EP Clouser? Yes, yes it has. The profile of that DD will slim down when it gets in the water so the dry DD is crazy big. So here is a picture of a couple of Dry Double Deceivers And here is a wet Double Deceiver We actually threw the DD for Whites and Stripers this year....it was a funky white and striper season here but it did stick some Whites and some small Spotted Bass....got some Great video for the Spring video of this huge fly in their mouth.
  11. In all seriousness, I look at bucktail a lot different than I used to. I don't tie Clousers with it anymore because I use EP (a clouser has ONE movement and that is jigging which makes using bucktail on them crazy, IMHO) but on the other hand I use it for big flies more than I ever used to. Bucktail makes a GREAT "bulking" material while not using a ton of it. So when you have something that flares and holds that flare you can really start getting a really cool profile and extra movement in the water. What happens when you have a flared bucktail fly in the water is as it is moving during the strip it slims down (makes sense right) but AFTER the strip as the fly is slowing down that bucktail flares again giving extra movment and a dart in any axis.....you can't get that with synthetic material. I REALLY like Craft Fur as a "wing" type material over the top of a fly and have become a huge fan of a triple-articulated fly that uses it in that fashion. And Granato's flies are some of the most fishy looking and fun to tie patterns I have ever seen. There is probably an 80% chance that I will cover his flies next and would start with the Chubby Muffin....mostly because I already tie it.
  12. The Congo Hair would defenitely be a different look and different movement. Basically, with the bucktail you get that extra weight behind it and it stays fairly "stiff" to you get opposite movement after the strip. Most synthetic material isn't going to give you much movement after the strip simply because it is too soft. I'm not saying a fly tied with Congo Hair or EP Fibers in this style wouldn't be completely awesome though....because they would be. FWIW, I will be using the reverse tying method with Craft Fur on a triple articulated fly video in the future so you can really get away with that technique with a load of different materials. The one thing that can make or break your reverse tied bucktail is the thread. I like a flat waxed nylon or GSP as long as the GSP is thick. If you get too skinny it will cut your bucktail. Also, take a bic pen and pull the insides out so all you have is the tube.....then you can use that to push your hair back over itself if you are having problems with that. I like this "flat" profile a lot.
  13. Well guys, it was a little bittersweet finishing the Galloup line of streamers.....but covering Mike Schmidt's stuff is already proving to be seriously, seriously cool. The first fly in the Schmidt lineup is the infamous Double Deceiver. In all seriousness, this fly looks to be more like a Musky fly when it is out of the water--it is large and in charge for sure. But get it wet and the profile slims down and it literally moves on it's own. The Schlappen tail and the flared and backwards tied bucktail gives this fly a movement that is all it's own....you never know which way it is going to dart after the strip--which is exactly what I look for in a big streamer. I do have some fine print for this fly though....I have tweaked it a little to fish a little better on the North Fork of the White. I tie it with a little bit slimmer of a profile instead of monster hunks of backwards tied bucktail I stack some flared bucktail simply because this fly can get a little too large for low water streamer fishing on the North Fork of the White. For guys on the White River, Arkansas, Taney, Norfork, Little Red where flows can get big....the standard version of the Double Deceiver works well....but for the rest of us that want to be able to fish this fly on ALL flows--I am pretty proud of "my" version. Here you go guys, the first fly in the Mike Schmidt series......the Double Deceiver. Recipe: Rear Hook: Hook - Gamakatsu B10s #2 Tail - Schlappen Body - Bucktail Connection Point - Beadalon Front Hook: Hook - Gamakatsu B10s #1 Tail - Schlappen (optional) Body - Bucktail Eyes - Mirage Domed Head - Clear Cure Goo Brian
  14. Thanks Rich, I don't think the videos did justice of just how hard we fished.....and how much fun we had getting our hats handed to us during that trip. I hear you about the "healing power" -- but we had a good buddy with us that helped in that department and he went by the name Captain Morgan.
  15. I have to say.....the name of this thread caught my attention. Welcome to the forum!!
  16. My pleasure fellas......seriously appreciate the kind words.
  17. Yeah! If the water was a little lower we would have moved it farther away from the fly.....but boy, when you are talking 1400 cfs it sure helps get the flies down quickly to put that weight 6-8" away from the first fly.
  18. VERY cool!! Great job! Schlalppen is pretty major, and really "fills" the body without adding bulk. It also makes GREAT tails (you will see in the Double Deceiver video)
  19. I am still not a huge fan of flies that "jig", but that is the drift boat guide in me I am sure. Don't get me wrong, they absolutely catch fish but they only move in 2 directions (up and down). Now, wading is a totally different story and I would probably use a "jigging" fly a lot more than an unweighted (or neutral) fly just to get it deep. The Boogie Man still jigs a little too much for me, but it 'does' have that extra movement like you said Lancer09. Totally agreed with the legs, and when I tie them more for my fishing it will have legs, it is kind of weird to have a Galloup fly without Sili-Legs. Appreciate the kind words.
  20. That secret was TOTALLY safe with me......but since you mentioned that I think we have that on video don't we? HUGE Double Deceiver in the mouth of a small spotted bass.
  21. I completely agree.....I have 2 Meatlockers completely full and then a box that is twice as big as a Meatlocker--and it is completely full too. It's an addiction. The Mufasa is on the list FOR SURE. Right now I plan on doing the Double Deceiver (already done just need to add a little bit to it), Mufasa, Meal Ticket, Stinky Mayo, Voodoo Squatch, and maybe the Red Rocket. EXACTLY, in my eyes if it weren't for the Mallard causing it to "hang" just a touch in the water I wouldn't be too excited about this fly....but then again, it is just so mean looking!!
  22. I just recently started tying nymphs again because guiding season forced me to....tied big streamers ALL WINTER, and it was awesome.
  23. Thanks! Having a lot of fun making them.
  24. The thing looks like it would punch you in the face.....and I like that. Gonna have some fun with Schmidt's patterns, there aren't quite so many of them but they are crazy-cool. Also shot a tying video with Kyle Kosovich with some "Behind the Scenes" stuff, should be cool and thrown in somewhere in the middle of everything.
  25. The final Galloup fly....the Boogie Man. Definitely a play off of the Dungeon. Materials Rear Hook: Hook - Gamakatsu B10s #2 Tail: Marabou Body: Estaz Hackle: Schlappen Wing: Mallard Articulation Point - Beadalon with Glass Beads Front Hook: Hook - Gamakatsu B10s #1 Eyes - Lead Body - Estaz Hackle - Schlappen Wing - Mallard Head - Wool Next I will move to Mike Schmidt's patterns with the Double Deceiver coming up first (I was so excited about doing the Double Deceiver that I shot it before I finished all of the Galloup flies) and underwater video will be back. Again, thanks guys.
