    The Cast

Great photo, even better looking cast! Nice! Brian
  2. Great report Brian! The pod of stripers that you saw have been up there for a while. The way the MDC is looking at it is that if they were to shock them they would really have no place to put them to relocate. Basically it would mean they would have to bring tanks on the boats with them as they do the survey and that would take a considerable boat along with a lot of room in the considerable boat. The last I hear they are going to leave them and let the public cull them out. For sure they aren't 'good' for the river. But the way I look at it is the trout are BY FAR the smaller number of fish in the river compared to chubs, suckers, minnows so if there are 20,000 chubs per mile in the river they would more than likely eat more of them than anything. Also guides that fish for stripers around here have said that when they cut the stripers open they saw a ton of crawfish. Brian
  3. Fished a great guy from Fort Scott today. If you were going to dream up a perfect day for August this would have been it, high in the low 70's with rain pretty much all day. Put in at ROLF, floated to Blair and fishing was better than any trip I have had during any summer. No telling how many fished were rolled and missed but landed several, several rainbows from 5" to 15". Hooked another good brown in seriously fast water that ran into the backing but yet again--it was lost. Even with the rain and overcast conditions the fish were super deep and at one point we had 7'+ between the indicator and the lead fly. If you come here fish deep, I can't stress it enough!! Brian
  4. I DID send that one skipping across the surface....bet he won't take an articulated Slumpbuster/Parker variant again. Brian
  5. Hey guys, Fished Saturday night with Kyle Kosovich who used to guide with me at ROLF. He had also recently built an old school jon boat that is absolutely beautiful....20' of pure sexyness. Put in at Blair around 7 p.m. and took out at Patrick around 11 p.m., we thought it was actually a lot later than that or we would have taken our time a little more. Saturday night was of course a full moon and was in the mid to low 60's which for August was awesome. We found ourselves casting to the shadows like we would have had we been on the water around 1 in the afternoon. With the twists and turns of the river we would find ourselves in complete darkness and then come around the corner and literally squint because of the moon. Not good for fishing but made the night a very cool experience. Fishing was funny. I caught a little goggle-eye right below Sunburst, and then a decent little brown the only trout of the night and then it was completely goggle-eye and nice goggle-eye at that. Now I have never caught a goggle-eye on the river and probably caught 8 that night. These were goggle-eye that would have been nice on the Bryant. A great night with good company and the boat is too sweet. To give a little depth Brian
  6. Hey guys, Thought I would let you know about a crazy good deal on Tungsten Beads. Here is an exerpt from another site about them: "Have all the colors and sizes except 2.0 mm nickel. $14.00 a hundred up to 1/8th. $14.00 per hundred but you can order them in 25 ct for $3.50 plus shipping." $14.00 per 100 for TUNGSTEN! Go here for contact info for JimmyT-- www.flyfisharkansas.com I already made my order! Brian
  7. Cadillacricket, Possibly the best thing about Dry Run Creek is that it is not a "pay to play" creek--it is completely free. I have to say that I have fished at a couple of pay to play places and the fish are no where near as big as the fish on Dry Run either. Chances are if kids fish it more than once they will catch the fish of their lifetime. I would seriously consider jumping off of Norfork Dam just to fish it for a day. Thanks for the kind words guys, Parker is still talking about it and has watched the video a dozen times. Brian
  8. Unfortunately weekends in late September are tough for me to do anything. That really starts my fall fishing madness so chances are I'll be booked up. I would love to come just not sure if it can happen. Have fun and let us know how it goes! Brian
  9. Yeah Terry, you can sure tell her photos compared to mine! Flysmallie, Dry Run would be a little over 2 hours from Springfield I believe. It is an awesome little creek--and beautiful to boot! Brian
  10. Thanks Michael, Ran into the lens fogging up this weekend. I'll just have to remember to shoot the hero shots first and then get underwater. Brian
  11. Hey guys, The family and I ran down to Dry Run today. It was my 3 year olds first trip down there and he had a blast. He was fly fishing and did really well landing his first fish on the fly rod, a tiny rainbow. His attention didn't last very long so it turns out the playground at Quarry Park is in a perfect spot! My 5 year old has been down before and already had, well, several fish under his belt on the fly rod. This trip was completely different, on the way down I explained to him that he was pretty much on his own. He did spectacular, I couldn't believe it. He has been casting for a while now (since he was 3) so that isn't that much of a problem, except for the roll cast. Mending was a different story so that is where I had to help him a bit. BUT he casted, mended, set, and fought his first fish ever completely by himself....I am a 'touch' proud. After mending good a few times and not so good a few times I help him once and saw the indicator pause half way through the mend....we set and it was ON! I let go, shot some video and watched my 5 YEAR OLD land this fish. He was sporting the Buff today as well...."ganster style" Releasing his first brown.... Brian
  12. LOVE the MacGyver idea, too cool! Brian
  13. Messing with it today including a carwash benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in which I had my wife test the camera by spraying me while on video I am really liking it. I went ahead and got one of those funky tripods that can wrap around stuff as well, it is really small and can fit in my pack or waders really easily for those self portrait hero shots. Hopefully we will give it a workout not too long from now Tim. Brian
  14. Hey guys, Just bought the Olympus 850SW and really haven't had a chance to do a whole lot with it. I was wondering how/if you can get unlimited (according to card size of course)time on videos at 30fps. It is only running 10 seconds of video at 30fps but it will run 30 seconds of video at 15fps. Basically, can you run unlimited timed video at 30fps?? and if so how. Brian
  15. Man, thanks guys. Gavin, I hadn't even thought about Dylan.... Found some Kottke too, thanks a lot guys! Brian
  16. Hey guys, I am wanting some more straight acoustic folk or acoustic mexican folk for some videos and slideshows. I have a buddy that plays a 12 string like crazy but only has a few songs recorded. Who do you guys recommend for complete acoustic folk...no singing. Here is a video that I made with some of my buddies music, this is basically what I am looking for--gotta dig this stuff! Thanks! Brian
  17. Hey Tim, Most of the time Rockbridge is still in great shape even if the NFOW and Bryant are blown out. We haven't been getting much rain around here at all. Brian
  18. The North Fork of the White(MO) is very wadeable. It is completely different than the tailwaters though, and not within 25 miles. It's fishing really well right now though. Brian
  19. Fished a guy from KC and a guy from North Carolina today. Put in at ROLF floated to Blair. The fish were still a little "funny" as they were when Mr. Dally was here earlier this week. Caught a few fish in the morning but the bite just wasn't there like it should have been. As the day moved on the bite picked up and they were literally doing really well in what should have been the lull of a hot July afternoon including some browns. Finally got to do some sight fishing to a big, big brown. He never took but they enjoyed casting to him. Actually saw a ton of big browns moving today....probably the most I had seen since the high water. Taught some Czech Nymphing and both caught fish with that technique. One guy lost 2 real nice fish--he was sick. Chances are you may be able to read about this day in the near future. Hoovers, RL's, San Juans, and RFSN's Muleball, I stopped at the Patrick campground on my way home to see if anyone was parked there, didn't see a rig anywhere near the upstream bathroom (by the gate.) Saw a zoo of campers and didn't think I wanted to leave the boat unattended so sorry I missed you. Brian
  20. Right on. When you walk up the trail to the island make sure to have some tick spray--they were bad the last time I was there. I will try to get a hall pass after I get done guiding. Brian
  21. Mottled Rubber Legs and San Juans are the hot flies now. Did fish this past weekend and fishing was "different" not bad, but different. Fish deep. I am actually on the river that day floating from ROLF to Blair so doubt I'll get a chance to stop by. How late will you be there just in case? Brian
  22. hahaha, yeah, green!! The USGS site pretty much says it all. Most of the rain stayed way south in the watershed yesterday so it didn't really have a chance to "pile up" in the river. When Mtn Grove and just south of there get big rain is when the river tends to blow out more. Brian
  23. Glad you guys had a good time!!! Getting the misses to enjoy it is half the battle....now it's going to be easy to come back. Sorry I missed you, Brian
  24. Would that be in a red canoe there Forsythian?? Brian
