So I am hitting the rock with a buddy tomorrow. Neither one of us are very familiar with the lake. I am taking the little boat since the big boat is over at our river house. It is a 16' 48" jon boat. It doesn't have a depth finder so I could use advice on where to fish and how to find the fish... I love flukes and jerk baits, and top waters are my favorite, so any advice on these and where they are productive would be awesome... I have been on the rock 3 times and all times were kinda crappy days. We are planning to be on the water before 7am if at all possible. Thanks in advance

after an epic fail at whites on the james, I knew I could catch trout so I headed down yesterday around noon to taney. I put in at the hatchery access, and floated the trophy waters. I was using 1/8th white jigs and was catching a few but mostly just having them follow the bait but not take it. I drifted some powerbait after the trophy waters down to lilley's without much luck and got out and went up to the tackle shop. I picked up some black and red 1/8th jigs and some powerbait. I didn't catch any fish on powerbait yesterday. I went back up to below the island and anchored down from a guy that was catching a fish every to every other cast. I caught about 10 there in an hour or so. He was using solid black and his partner had black and yellow that were both producing fish. I picked up some olive jigs as well but they weren't hot. Black was the color yesterday. I was hoping for a trout dinner last night, but all fish were in the 13-16" range so no go, but I sure had fun. will be back on thursday if the generation is the same.

Wanting To Get After The Whites This Week, Where Do I Need To Go And When?
polock replied to polock's topic in James River
will do, got clearance from the wife to head down probably on tue or thurs depending on which day looks better... are they biting a slow steady retreat? -
Never have been white fishing. I finally brought my little boat over, I am looking to head out on the james on a nice day this week. Do they usually bite better at dawn or the evening? I don't have many jigs so what should I get for tackle. Do they bite anything white that is usually used for smallies? I am going to pull up a James river map, where is a good place to put in and go from? Where can I find limit and keeping regulations? Sorry guys for my stupidity, but I have never went after this type of fish. Any advice will be helpful. Do you float the middle of the river and cast the banks like if you were smallmouth river fishing? I am taking another buddy with me and he has never fished them either. When we go, my little boat is black with a silver and maroon stripe on it with a white 40hp johnson jet on the back. feel free if you see us out to point and laugh, then give us some pointers .

there is a road, i think it is 125-17c that goes off 125 right out of sparta that crosses above lindenlure lake. anyone ever put in here and paddle up/down, thought it may be easier than scaling the dam. from looking at google maps doesn't look like there is many houses around this area, might not have as many people bothering ya.

how's the current at the park for paddling up??? where do ya park I was thinking about going down there this next week instead of scaling the dam

First Time On The Finley And Climbing The Dam.. Was Pleased With My Results
polock replied to polock's topic in Finley River
I got the 399 model. I spent 18 bucks on the adjustable rod holder, I got a flush mount holder for 8.00, got on ebay and spent 6 bucks on 2 kayak cleats, and 3 bucks on 2 packs of 8 eyelet loops to add on. so for under forty bucks I have a nicer kayak than their 499 model. -
yeah i am gonna make a version of the milk crate caddy, i like that. plus the ascend has a spot for the milkcrate so that is even better.

First Time On The Finley And Climbing The Dam.. Was Pleased With My Results
polock replied to polock's topic in Finley River
no but i paddled way up from the houses. I really don't care if they do haggle me, I'll let them know I respect the water, and I even pick up trash if i see it and can get to it, i catch and release unless I am fishing for a meal, which i usually go after crappie and goggle eye for that. If they still haggle me i'll paddle on, and if they follow me, i'll report em for harassment, thats about all you can do. I really don't let hagglers bother me, -
Ok guys, I got the new kayak, it is the bass pro ascend sit in 10' I got the middle end model. I didn't see paying 100 extra bucks for an extra paddle holder, 2 flush mount pole holders and a tray mounted pole holder, I added in a tray mount fishing holder and one flush mounted pole holder. I took it out today and it trackes very well. It strayed a bit when the wind picked up quite a bit, but for the length it did very very well. I am super thrilled about my purchase now. It is a bit heavy and I am going to make a milk crate cart for it. Since the back storage hole has a recess for a milk crate, it will be perfect.

ok, i hit the finley, and climbed the dam to the lake with the new kayak, I paddled up for about an hour and fished back. I caught 6 large mouths on a 3" mini plastic jerk bait fished almost still with a few twitches. Largest one was around 14 inches. I am going to make a strap on cart that goes on the back of the kayak where I can pull it easier on land, but not as huge as the carts you buy. I can't wait to hit this stream in the summer!

Man, You got me second guessing now. I am really really liking everything about the bass pro ascends. they feel great in the seat, the have easily reached storage, and they are priced right. I am wanting this yak for finley river, swan creek, and smaller rivers around here. upper jacks fork and current river. I won't be hitting any big water. I would go with the old town vapor 12' but I just don't like the set up of them as well. I like being able to reach the cockpit tray when sitting down but still having room to set a pole beside me. I think I am going to go with the 10' because of ease of use and being in smaller creeks and such maybe tracking won't be a big issue. -
Hey guys, All my life I have been a clear water river fisherman going after smallmouth, walleye, brim and goggle eyes. To sum it up quick, I suck on the big lakes. I have a boat with a fish finder(not that I am any good reading it). I more rods and reels than that law alows, but everything is set up for bass fishing. I know I have stuff that will work for crappie, but not sure about whites. I just need some advice on where to go, when to start, what every angler going after these types have in their possession, and any pointers one could give me. when time comes I'll take anyone that can put me on the fish and it could be a free gas trip for them. Boat has a 115hp motor on it so I don't know if that is allowed on the james or not when the whites start. I am pretty sure I could figure out fishing the james, but tablerock is really my weakness, and could use a lot of help. Any advice, or cool fishing partners would be awesome.

very true. I always get a tape measure and measure the rods to find out if the tip has been replaced, just how much is missing. I'll still buy if under it is only missing under 2"

hey guys. I have grown to really like the bionic blade bass pro carries. They are 80 bucks in the store. I went to the outlet store last week and picked up 2 bionic blade spinning rods, a browning 4 piece travel rod and a pflueger micro light and spent 80 bucks. They have some really nice rods out and the highest I have found was 25.00. the bionic blades are 25, the browning was 20, the pfluger was 10. if you are up that way, check it out. they have been kinda sparse on good rods for a while, but if you go now, looks like they have a good selection.

Anyone Been In One Of The Ascend Brand Kayaks Sold At Basspro
polock replied to polock's topic in General Angling Discussion
I like a kayak better really. Just got off the phone with the plant manager in Lebanon where these kayaks are made. He said he owns a 12vapor, a 10vapor and one of these ascends. He said the ascend will out track the 10 vapor. sounds like they are really going to back their warranty even after the 1 year if something breaks. He pretty much made up my mind. I am gonna get the mid line ascend. probably be next week. -

I went up to basspro last night after I left Cox. I had a really helpful guy help me get all the kayaks down and sit in them. I tried out the old town vapor 10xt and the ascent mid grade one for 399 the vapor is 439.00. Here is what I found out. Vapor: more narrow Lighter larger cockpit opening smaller cockpit tray and it is almost impossible to reach more comfortable seat hatch cover but the hatch is a lot smaller Ascend mid range: Wider a bit heavier but I easily threw it up on my shoulder The cockpit is set up perfect, the tray has more capacity and is easily reached but doesn't feel too tight. has one paddle holder. doesn't have hatch cover but this hatch will hold a TON of stuff you can adjust the seat back while sitting in these with one hand. It is awesome how they have these set up. the seat wasn't the best but not the worst either The only difference I found in the 399 and 499 angler model were: angler model has 2 paddle holders, one more "x" of bungee on the front rigging. bungees for the rear hatch 2 flush mount rod holders and a rod holder mounted on the cockpit tray. I found all this stuff to make the mid grade like the angler model online for about 40 bucks. I think I am going to go with the ascend. My only worry is that it is 31 inches wide, it might be incredibly slow. -
I have my eyes on a 10 old town vapor xt kayak, but i am looking at the ascend brand bass pro carries, just wondering if anyone has any experience with them. I am looking for a combination of speed, stability and room for fishing. I was set on old town's vapor but then when I went to bass pro I saw these ascends and decided to find out about them before I bought.
