  1. trolling. if its a row boat, then just row around a lake with the line dragging about 50 -70 feet behind. or drift with the wind and troll with the lind behind. if you have a trolling motor, then just troll around the lake with that.
  2. 1. I never said anything about protecting the westlope cutt. 2. OMG I didnt know that there werent any trout native to the ozarks. WOW. I guess I just wasted $25,000 on getting my biology degree. I want a refund!! Or just maybe I should just go back and get my masters and have my thesis be "Browns on the 11 pt. Should they be there?"
  3. It doesnt have much to speak of for backcountry because it is missouri. If you want the back country then go somewhere there is back country. Which in most cases in the US would be back east in the apalachains, north to minnesota, michigan, and wisconsin, west to the rockies or the california sierras, or the northwest. and then AK.
  4. There is obviously a reason that browns have not been stocked. Whats wrong with only having rainbows? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Just leave the river how it is a get on with your life. If you want to fish for browns then go drive to somewhere that has brown trout in the river. if you complain about the gas prices and not being able to get there, then thats a personal problem. I just fished the black canyon of the gunnison last weekend. The browns are completely taking over and the CDOW wants you to take browns out. They are trying to preserve what rainbows are left. All the rainbows in that section of river are wild fish. they are trying to protect the rainbows. I caught a 20 in brown right infront of a CDOW agent right after he checked my liscense and he told me to keep it. I didnt becuase I had about 5 hours left to fish and then a 4.5 mile hike back out of the canyon. I only caught 3 rainbows during the 2 days I fished it. the other probably 50 fish i caught were browns. My point is that CDOW knows they made a mistake by planting browns in the river because it is demolishing the wild rainbow population by eating the rainbow fingerlings. Lets face it, a 20in brown can eat a lot of fingerlings. Hell a 15 in brown can eat a lot of rainbow fingerlings. For that reason I am against stocking browns in the 11 pt. thats my story and im stickin to it
  5. Just because something is wild doesnt mean that it is native. In ecology, an indigenous species is an organism which is native to a given region or ecosystem. Indigenous species contrast with introduced species. An introduced species, also known as a naturalized or exotic species, is an organism that is not indigenous to a given place, but has been transported there as a result of human activity. ie the new zealand mud snail or zebra mussel. An indigenous species is not necessarily endemic. In biology and ecology, endemic means exclusively native to the biota of a specific place. An indigenous species may occur in more than one locale. The terms endemic and indigenous do not mean that an organism necessarily originated or evolved where it is found. Take eastern red ceaders for instance. They are everywhere, but they are not native to missouri or the ozarks. They are an invasive to this area. Hedgeapple aka osage oranges are not native to missouri either. Rainbow trout are not a native fish to missouri or any of the interior united states. They are however native to Alaska and the west coast states. Brook trout are native to the appalachain states. Cutthroats are are native to the western states.....Colorado, Wyoming. The only native species of trout in colorado is the Greenback Cutthroat. everything else has been stocked. Even the brookies here are an invasive species. what biologists consider to be native and non native is all based on historical records. If you have any questoins, get ahold of a biologist at any university and ask them if you dont believe what i am saying.
  6. Phesant tails, Princes, copper johns, san juan worms, zebra midges (all different colors). All of these flies in sizes 14-20 will cover just about all of your fishing situations. thats as far as nymphs go. as far as dries, some nice big chernobyl hoppers will work. black/brown, yellow/brown, green/brown, black/red. for other dry flies, the best bet is to see what is going on when you get to your destination and buy when you get there. I almost forgot scuds, sizes 14-20 also, in olive, brown, green, gray.
  7. so I canned all the juan stuff (my trips got cancelled one guy said it was too cold one morning, and another guy got stuck in vegas and couldnt get a flight out.) No calls for other trips so one of our guides and I went for a stroll to the Black canyon. We were on our way to steamboat springs anyway to pick up his Hog Island Boat and we made a stop. The stones were going crazy. I would rather fish with huge size 4 dry flies and huge nymphs than fish size 22-28 midges at the juan any day. we got there and hiked 4.5 miles and 3000 vertical feet down. Salmon flies were everywhere. And fish smacking them. I started out the morning nymphing with a stonefly pattern that I tie and caught an 18" brown on the first drift. The day just got better from there. We hiked upstream and downstream and caught probably 20 fish between the 2 of us throughout the day and The smallest fish was 17". I caught 4 fish over 20 including a nice 21" rainbow to colse out the day on a size 20 emerging caddis. (The caddis were coming off in droves also.) After hiking back out of the canyon, we probably put 12-13 miles in that day and got out just as the sun wasa setting over the horizon. I suffered from a little heat exhaustion and dehydration from deciding that fishing was more important that drinking enough water. (bad choice) The next day we went down to the pleasure park area and hiked in about 3 miles up the river and pretty much set up shop on a deep riffle that was about 75 yds long and full of fish. I caught too many fish to count but did also manage 3 fish over 20 on my stone and a prince. The black canyon is only half way between steamboat and durango. Well we didnt end up making it up to steamboat because the boat was done, but there was not a trailer to pull it on and we wouldnt have one untill wed! With a trip of 7 people on thursday, and a trip on wed, we decided we would just drive back to durango today. On our way back, the Uncompaghre flows north from Red mountain pass through Ouray, Ridgeway and to Delta where it meets the gunny. We stopped and fished the Tailwater section below ridgeway. That river looks just like roaring river below the park only about twice as big twice as deep and twice as fast. We only had time to fish for an hour or so, but I managed 3 beautiful rainbows on one of my woven caddis and a prince. Not a bad trip. I figured ive fished for 30 hours over a 4 day period. All other time was spent driving, hiking, or recovering alittle bit each night from catching so many big fish.
  8. If any of you are planning a trip out west to the Juan, you should do it now cause the fishing is off the hook. Im booked all week, but if you decide to come look me up!!!
  9. Im headed to the Ashville, Cherokee area for the next trial before nationals. We are gonna be fishing the 'louftee and the tuc'. If anyone has fished near there, i could use all the help i can get. Ive been in touch with several people in that area already, but if any of you have any other advice it would sure help me also.
  10. im not talking about harming the environment. Im talking about IGNORANCE among people that want to kill snakes. I used to hate them as well, but since I took herpetology, I've decided to do my masters work on snakes.
  11. ive been using that line for a year now on my 5wt and i wont fish any other line. Rio is the way to go.
  12. AMEN!!!
  13. It was probably a northern water snake or a black snake. neither one would bite you. Just because it was swimming toward you doesnt mean that it was going to attack. It was probably just looking to find a place to get out of the water, and with all the anglers that fish around outlet 2, it is sure hard to find a place without any people.
  14. I hope y'all wouldnt kill it. As a nature lover, outdoorsman, and biologist, If you leave it alone it wont bother you. they wont bite unless provoked.
  15. 16. I deffinitely will. i have a lot of work i need to do between now and then, but It will pay off.
  17. The prices you are experiencing are the same prices that we have been paying in Durango for the last 3 months.
  18. It would have been sweet to see my spill. There was a photographer there....some guy buy the name of Eastman.....aka Eastmans hunting journal, or sporting journal....whose grandpa invented KODAK. He got a sweet picture of one of the team guys taking a spill, but he was only in water that was 3 feet deep. I was over hy head. Phil-- You can go to http://www.nationalflyfishingchampionship.com/ and it will tell you all about it. I stayed with Mikey Wier from the Troutbum Diaries for that week also and got to fish with him. we drove up toward jellystone and fished the North Fork of the Shoshone river and caught some beautiful Rainbows, Browns, and Yellowstone cutts. It was one of the most awesome experiences. That little juant made the trip worthwhile for the both of us.
  19. I use Lamson Velocity and Lite speed II's. I go large arbor on any reel if I could. But its all personal preference. Just like everything else. As for prices, i would rather spend up to 300 for a reel one time, rather than buy crappy $50 reels 4 or five times. Again like anything else you get what you pay for. I personally wouldnt buy a reel from any other company that is known for a good something else. Companies that are known for rods for the most part dont make reels that are up to par. Take sage for example, I am not a fan of their reels, but their rods are pretty good. THat is just a rule that I personally go by.
  20. This last weekend, I went to the 2nd US Fly Fishing Team Regional in Cody. I placed 12th overall out of 39 people and qualified for the National Trial in Boulder the First week in October. I almost drown in the process, but Its a great feeling. We fished the Clarks Fork River and Monster lake. I will have to say that Monster did not live up to all the hype as only a handful of fish were caught. I however caught 1 fish in each of my two sessions on the lake. The river completely blew out and was extremely difficult. I did catch one white fish on the river and and lost it when the river swept me downstream litterally 50 yards through class III/IV rapids. That fish would have put me 7th overall.
  21. Out here on the San Juan if you are doing the circle jerk and staying in T-hole, you row upstream against the current to the top of T-hole and then float down 200 or so yards and then row upstream to the top of T-hole again. With the super strong winds we get down there rowing upstream with the wind in your face blows....no pun intended Thats an everyday thing for us to do it all day everyday, if thats what the clients want. Or we just shuttle ourselvs. Leaving our truck and trailor at the end of the float.
  22. you can use a PMD (pale morning dun) immitation also. They are practically the same mayfly except for the fact that one hatches in the morning and one in the evening. The fish may have been refusing your flies because it might not have been presented right ie. the fly dragging in the current, or there may have been trash on your fly. Sometimes if the drift is not completely perfect, then the fish wont even look....other times you could swing them infront of the fish and skate them across the surface for really agressive strikes.
  23. It is a stonefly imitation. Used out here in the west. Pretty much a leaded hook white rubber legs and black chinielle.
  24. Im not trying to discourage anyone from entering the fly swaps, and I dont think that there should be different swaps for different levels of tiers either. thats all Ive got
  25. There is better fishing off of oahu. I will also be there christmas of 07. You shouldnt take anything less than an 8wt with preferably a shooting head. do some searches on fly fishing oahu, and you should beable to find some good stuff. I know my brother did. Im already tying for that trip.
