I am not sure how how this is supposed to be done. So my question is, when trolling for what ever you are fishing for, how is the reel supposed to be set. Let's say I am trolling with a wiggle wort for walleye. I make my cast behind the boat, put my rod in the rod holder and then start the boat moving. Is the reel supposed to be locked, as in when you are reeling it in? If I do that, won't the rod be broke or pulled out of the boat if I sang a tree/rock? Seems I remember that when deep sea fishing, and trolling a large lure behind the boat, using a large Penn reel, there is some kind of trolling switch that the reel is set-up for. The lure isn't strong enough to pull the line out, but when a large fish grabs the lure it will start pulling line. You then flip the bail and start reeling in. Am I thinking of this wrong? I don't think I have ever heard anyone talk about this on their TV show when they are trolling for walleye.

Question about trolling. How should the reel be set? Such as trolling for walleye. Do you lock the reel? Should the drag be set light so if a snag is encountered the rod and/or reel are not broken?

Anyone been catching them the last few days? I was thinking of trying this weekend and maybe Monday.

March 26, 2008 Stockton Lake Fishing Report

Right now the weather report ( depending on which one you look at ) says 60% chance of Thunder showers on Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday. Saturday will be partly cloudy and about 63 degrees. So if you are on the lake on Sunday I will be the one with the cup trying to bail the water out. -
March 26, 2008 Stockton Lake Fishing Report

Thank you for the report sir. I will come down Saturday afternoon and stay until Monday afternoon. I sure would like to run into a school of feeding walleye. I've only caught 3 in my life time. It's sad to hear that you have had trouble with the boat docks/marina lessee. I would like to presue this but not sure how to go about it. Like you said, from what I have seen someone is going to get hurt. Some fisherman are not going to put up with someone standing on a dock screaming at them and throwing things at them. It's interesting that the water patrol would support this. Makes me think the officer is related to the issue. Anyone have any ideas on how to persue the legal aspect of this. -
I am thinking of coming out for a few days. The weather isn't looking that great. Looked like Stockton got rain today. Is it even worth coming down to fish?

Need Info On Boat Ramp Permit, Please
Hooked replied to Hooked's topic in General Angling Discussion
Thank You very much. That is what I was looking for. -
Isn't there a place on-line to buy the yearly boat ramp permit that the Army Corp offers? I can't find the dang thing. Trouble is I can't remember where I bought it last year. If I remember correctly the Casy's general store in Stockton, MO sales them. Is that correct? Can I buy one on-line.

October 10, 2007 Stockton Lake Fishing Report
Hooked replied to Thompson Fishing Guide Service's topic in Stockton Lake
Thank you sir. I didn't get a chance to get up by the dam this past weekend. The wind was a killer and blowing straight into the dam. My wife and I love to fish for pearch. Maybe we will get a chance next year. My fishing season is over for this year. -
I was out there Saturday 10-20 and didn't catch one white bass. I didn't get out there until 3 pm. I fished until the sun went down. I caught a few black bass. I was used a white spinner bait, silver in-line spinner, jigs and small frietiger crank bait. I even tried to troll. What did you use? Was the key to be there early in the morning?

Marty I would like to try my luck on those Blue gill. I have a question though. How deep should I fish,12 feet or fish in water that is 12 feet deep. -
Thanks for the info. I will post how we do on Tuesday. Monday morning I am heading to Pomme to try for white bass and muskie. Water might still be a little warm for muskie. I'll post the results herre.

Anyone have any tips on crappie and Walleye. My wife and I will fish stockton this weekend. I am thinking the crappie might be on bluffs about 10 to 15 feet. Hopefully tube jigs will work. Walleye, I am guessing will be on points maybe around 15 to 20 feet. I was planning on using a small deep diving shad colored crank bait. I am not much of a walleye fisherman. Will Walleye come up from 20 feet to get a crank bait at 10 to 12 feet? I don't think I have anything that will dive deeper. We always pratice catch and release... wish everyone did.

I have been told that the crappie are doing good around the docks farthest in the cove. Chartreuse and black jigs. BEWARE of flying rocks from the boat slip renters and the Mutton Creek employees.

My wife and I will be out there this Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Hope things pick up. It's not easy catching fich in water that is that clear.

Interesting... I think this explains why the Marina threatens to call the water patrol but never does. To put it simple. I don't see a problem with a bass/crappie fisherman fishing from his boat around or near the docks. Now if that fisherman gets out of the boat and on the dock then they traspassing. I don't see why someone leasing a slip would get so upset over someone throwing his/her lure down the side of a dock while fishing. Where is the harm. The kid from the Mutton marina actually threatened to through rocks at those people and was actaully looking for rocks to through.

April 25, 2007 Stockton Lake Fishing Report
Hooked replied to Thompson Fishing Guide Service's topic in Stockton Lake
Thanks for the report Marty. I have a question... What is considered a secondary point. You mentioned that in your report on Bass fishing. -
Everyone familiar with Mutton Cove knows there are two sets of docks. One is where the marina and restaurant are located. the other is, I would guess 400 feet or more from the marina. I could understand why people shouldn't fish from a boat close to the marina. With all the boats going in and out, it could be considered unsafe. And I would think it would just be common courtesy. I am not so sure why anyone would even have a problem with someone fishing from a boat around the other docks, farther into the cove. Not sure how they justify charging people, like me, to fish from the dock but boats are not allowed to fish around the docks. According to maps I have seen and all the web pages that are listed for Stockton lake... it is clearly an Army Corp lake. There is no private property around the lake. Of course you have your buoys that say "no wake area" or "No boats with-in 200 feet of the Dam". I don't think Mutton Creek marina will get any of my business. The way that kid was yelling at those people was pretty harsh and excessive. I was sure there was going to be a physical fight. The people in the boat were very clam and I think that is what kept it from escalating. I can't imagine this is the first time this has happened. I believe I will just stay away from Mutton Creek marina from now on.

Does anyhone know if the Mutton Creek cove is private. I seen an altercation around the end of March that ws interesting and suprising. Apparently a group of people where fishing around the docks down from the Mutton Creek Marina and the Marina didn't like it. I guess they were fishing too close to the docks. Some guy on the dock was yelling at these people in a boat because they where fishing around the docks. I couldn't hear what he was saying but it looked like the people in the boat were just ignoring him. I know you have to pay to fish on the docks at the marina (thats where I was) but these people were by the other docks, several hundred yards away from the marina. The group of people came to the marina in their boat, why I am not sure, but that is when I heard one of the marina workers (the marina worker was pretty mad about something) yell at the group telling them that the cove was private and that they would have to leave before they called the water patrol. The people in the boat seemed to be pretty laid back. Not sure what was going on. Anyone know if the cove is private and if they can tell fisherman that they can't fish around the docks. I did see other boats fishing around the docks but didn't see anyone say anything to them. Maybe I missed something but I don't want to get a ticket for trespassing on private waters if I bring my boat into the cove. Does this make sense to anyone who fishs this lake.
