  1. Event is this Saturday!! Don't miss out!
  2. Just got back after 5 days at Bennett, Crackle backs were smokin fish in the mornings and late evening, also buggers. Pretty dead after lunch as usual in the heat of the day(my theory because they always eat so many guts in the morning) but every evening about 715 a big hatch was coming off the water and I caught alot on dries, first night was all on Lt. Cahills size 18 and then the other 3 nights on elk hair caddis, then would switch to cracklebacks after that and catch steady fish until the buzzer. No lunkers for me this round but did see a few in the river that were pretty skiddish from people plopping huge bobbers around them and couldn't get a good run at any without them being bothered. I didn't see anyone doing anything illegal either, which was kind of suprising since it was free fishing weekend.
  3. So since the camera is out ,,,,did Bennett get hit with this big rain mass that came through yesturday. We got 3 inches of rain at my house, flash flooded everything around. Heading down in the morning, hopefully its still in good shape and the rain keeps to a minimum!

  6. I guess everyone has already left for fishing!! I head out here in a couple hours for RR. Can't wait.
  7. Learn to roll cast and keep an eye out behind you at all times. Usually alot of people walking the banks, kids, family's, fisherman changing holes, etc. Nothing worse then walking along and dodging someones fly line zipping past your face. Its easy to get caught in the moment and not look behind you, so I think its very important to learn to roll cast when you need to. For what to use, there are some great suggestions so far, One thing for starters i would start fishing somewhere that requires a short cast to get to the fish until you get skilled enough to do long cast, and start off with some smaller stuff you are confident with (maybe stuff you've used for years under a bobber with your spin real) and float it under a foam strike indecator. Small Glow balls, brassies, Thread jigs, Saun Jaun worms, etc. This way you build your confidence up and don't give up too quickly. 90% of your fly being successful is you believing it will catch fish. Once you get the hang of it you can start switching off to some traditional flies or stick with what is working. For dries watch what bugs are coming off the water, color, etc and tie something on similar.
  8. I know what most of your traditional fly patterns are suppose to resemble, but how about State Park patterns that you don't see at your average fly shop, like John Deere, Thread Jigs, Brassie's stuff like that..anyone know what they are suppose to resemble. I've used Thread jigs with alot of success even on wild trout and I have no idea what the heck it is suppose to be.. I did find this on a white Mini Jig (This color closely resembles the melt of spawning males, which seems to get fish into a feeding mood.) but not sure if that is the same as a white thread jig, flossy, what ever you want to call it. maybe they think its a larva of some sort. Ideas?
  9. Gaven. I understand man, and will keep that in mind for the next time, I know what its like with "internet scouters" which is why i didn't give any locations we fished like some do. I saw more people walking/riding the trails then fishing, we did see an angry armadilo though. lol, he was more suprised then we were to see him though. I'm sure you had more people that were making the trip up from Roaring River that were getting a little fishing in before the opening day caos, more so then a spike in interest.
  10. I took that picture from the bridge but we weren’t fishing that area, We drove to all the different access just to check them out and stay away from other people fishing but ended up in a different area all together. I don't think you'd have to worry about Crane turning into Bennett. Most people go to Bennet to catch stocker sized trout and keep them. Most people aren't going to be interested in spending more time scouting for fish then actually fishing and then when you finally find them your only catching fish that could be used as bait in most places, I know the other 4 guys on our trip who stayed fishing at Taney for the weekend laughed about the size of the fish and weren't interested in the place except for the story behind the McCloud when I showed them the pics of the few we caught Saturday. Not to mention you have to walk a long ways ( I put in at least 2 miles ), be stealthy to sneak up on the fish and you'd better be a seasoned fly caster unless you want to loose every fly in the tree's or scare the fish away with one wrong cast. Crane is more for someone who wants the challenge of catching wild trout, tight casting, and being able to catch a piece of history. If you don’t like walking 2 miles to catch 1 or 2 6 inch trout then its probably not the best place to travel too. If your looking for a challenge then it’s the place to be.
  11. Where is the place to get the eats at? We were looking around town and stopped a police officer and he told us the only place to eat was Subway..I'm thinking because he was worried about the local's spitting in his food or something. haha. We ended up eating when we got back to Taney where we were staying. Next time I go down I want to stay closer by so I can fish alot longer. now that I have fished one area i'd like to try out some of the others for sure. That 12 incher faught like a 4 pound trout when he nailed my brown bugger. You could tell he wasn't happy to have a hook in his mouth. Could see where you need to watch out for snakes come a little warmer weather.
  12. We went down to fish Taney over the weekend and with all 4 gen's running we decided to head over to Crane instead. I had never fished there before but a buddy on our trip goes quite often and I've been wanting to check it out for a while, so we went over there and got after them. Caught some fish on buggers and mostly dries. Beutiful weekend and beutiful fish!! Really colorful guy.
  13. Me and a couple buddies were there over the weekend. They did seam to cut off hard at a certian point. We still managed to catch a decent number of fish switching our flies very often. Seemed like you would catch 2 fish on one fly then they would completly cut off, switch to somthing else pick up a couple more fish. However after fishing Roaring River the past 3 weeks I was very impressed with the size of the fish at Bennett, We landed several 2 # fish.
  14. I think it all depends on time of day with the John Deere, they either really like it or not at all..I will fish it pretty deep and try and put it infront of the fish as it seams like they hit it as its sinking..... so the small indecator is nice because the slightest twitch and you better set the hook. I also will strip them back slowly. The best time that I have had luck is between 10 and noon or in the afternoon when the sun is setting towards the tree's. But I fish them exactly like a white floss pretty well. Good luck.
  15. My whole family (15 of us) was down for the weekend too, came in thursday left monday, was some awesome fishing, seemed like the size of the fish was smaller then normal but on sunday we got into several 1.5 lbs fish with an aditional 2 lber here and there. The fish seemed to be hitting on alot of different tackel but I picked up the majority of my trout on brown and green mini wooly's either dead drifting or stripping back..just depeneding on the time of day, but then alot on white flossies and white brassy's. Sunday evening we picked up a ton of fish from 4pm to 730pm strickly on white or red brassy's. I even hooked into a big brown that I faught for about 3 or 4 minutes until he finally dove in the shallows and broke me off. was sad but he'll be there for someone else. All in all was a great weekend. We had some new fly fishers's in our group that normally only spin fish and I got them converted over and they loved it..so that was great. Wishing I was still there.
