i just took a swiftwater instructor class and have a few important tips for you that don't boat that much but still go to rivers that have moving water( FOOT ENTRAPMENTS.) a major killer! this is caused by putting your feet down in moving water, a natural thing to do. if you have an up set with a canoe, or while wading. we did some river drills and i was suprized to find that water less than knee deep can trap you so fast, and with water pushing you down. it makes almost impossible to stand back-up. and water above waist deep, you will most likley drown. so to keep eveyone safe here is the drill! (you float on your back with your feet high on top of the water) and wait untill your bottom, hits the bottom before trying to stand-up. this is called defencive swimming with your feet up . the second one is a strainner ( a tree across the current) these are to be avoided at all cost! they had us swim into a 20 ft section of pvc pipe. and i can tell you first hand there is no way to get over it!! and as the water sucks you under. the thought that whent through my mind was (man o' man i'm glad this thing doesn't have any branches) if you can not avoid a strrainer you must swim at it aggressively, and as you hit the tree you MUST CLIMB UP ON IT! AND GET YOUR WAIST ABOVE THE WATER LINE. now with this being said i understand that most don't swim in fast moving water ,so these things will save a life if put in your mind well before it happens to you. most of us aren't kids anymore , and don't move as fast as we did.

fall colors are great! i was at ozark campground tons of yellows and gold, not so much red . the afternoon sun realy set the colors off!!
-
camping friday nite at buffalo point and will put on at the hwy 14 bridge around ten after running shuttles.. floating to just above rush and then camping overnite and paddle out sunday morning. but you could do this as a day trip if you wanted to... fall smallies are on! but on this section they will be all sore liped by sunday!

the one right below the dam would work.
-
that mid section is long and flat, yes some good bluffs, and better fishing. but you would be hard pressed to make any mileage. and the wind will be a big factor! the river is wider and more open than the upper sections... the st.joe gauge should be near 4. 0 or better. and a heavy loaded canoe you might have to do some dragging anyway!! it's easier to make the short trip longer and enjoy your time, instead of really busting your butt to make a long trip
-
it's always better to go down stream to shipps ferry rather that trying to paddle up the white river !!
-
buffalo outdoor center , would be about the only one i can think of on that upper section . i googled and a few pages came up!
-
i have alltel ... one in a lap top, and in my phone it's a flat fee... the next best is wifi

I went below the dam just to see what the levels looked like and to see the remains of the old fishing holes!,...well it's all new looking alright . very deep channel , along the far bank. looked to be deeper than waders could stand. better than half of the river!!! OH. that lower bathroom just above the trophy area .. it's gone! and all blocked off with orange tape! so then drove down to parkers and it's all a mess. the sidewalks are still there but, a lot that was under it is gone, and all blocked off. and has a tree across the other section of sidewalk. on the way back i cut through spider creek and it looked as if all of that lower side, of that big pool is all gone. along with all of spider creeks boat rental area that backed up in the creek. it's now just a limestone bluff!!!! . didn't really get a good look at it. i was too worried about that old one lane bridge holding me up !! and gas at the dam store was $4.49 .....OUCH!

..... but you still had 4 of a kind... and that beat a catfish and a blugill all to heck!

Canoe Opinions Appreciated
bobber replied to Forsythian's topic in Lodging, Camping, Kayaking and Caoneing
the applalachian is the only canoe from old town rated for classIII water tandem or solo a good value is around $700.. list price is like $1385 plus tax and shipping.... I just missed one a guy had listed for sale for $850 then dropped to $650 sold within seconds of him posting it.. -
no solo's that i can think of!... but you can just spin a tandem around and paddle it backwards( i mean with you sitting in the front seat, thats the back seat after the spinning around) this moves you more to the center of the canoe! or just load your heavy iced down cooler up front..... a foam gardeners mat/ or knee pads to kneel down on is a nice touch too! beware of the buffalo canoe the seat has a big lip on it .. a square-cushion will be needed for that one. ... i hope this help you out some?

if you can get out in the heat this is a fun overnight trip . i floated it last weekend. and the bite was from about 4;30 to dark-30!!!! nothing big, but lots of fun. the water isn't as clear as normal, and has some good dark green bottomed pools ...the" narrows " or narrs', is a little better than half way, but great place to camp( if your the first one to it!) or rather the gravel bank is very long and could hold many- people at the same time > but it's nice to have the BEST SPOT!! the upper sections of the buffalo are too low to float ( ponca to pruitt )and this maybe close to the end of the middle sections pruitt to woolum) before the outfitters shut-down for the season, and then every thing moves down stream to Tyler bend to rush. the lower section, you can't make any time on. this part of the river. it's a slower pace this time of year .. you can make a short trip long... but you can't make a long trip short! ... getting on late in the day seems to work, if you roam bank, to bank, only paddling in the shade it's really cool feeling,(outdoor A.C.) and it cools off as soon as the sun dips past the mountains..... AND THEN IT'S ON!

i still feel sick paddling by that tree,.... i paddled that same day, and section. but 4 hours earlier. i was looking for a lost dog that swam away in an other canoe roll-over the day before. ..> but it's in a spot in the river that makes a hard bend to the left and the current makes a big whirl-around eddy, and the tree hangs with it's roots on the right river bank and it makes a triangle out of this bend .at higher water levels you can swing way inside of the bend. but when it's just right at a lower level ,that is not an option. you have to spin 360* in the eddy and then paddle out ,down the river . most people do it and don't even think about it, or know what happened to them because the WATER MAKES YOU. and just being a little right, off the eddy, and BANG! you hit the tree. with all the force of the buffalo river pushing . ok>> SAFETY TIP>> IF YOU FIND YOUR CANOE IS GOING TO HIT A BIG TREE WITH ALL KINDS OF LIMBS THAT ARE IN THE WATER. YOU HAVE A SPLIT SECOND TO MAKE THE COMMAND CALL #1. LEAN INTO THE TREE. hug-it (YOU HAVE A CHANCE! THAT YOU WON'T FLIP)#2. CLIMB INTO THAT TREE... I MEAN JUMP-UP OUT OF THE CANOE AND GRAB GRAB GRAB GRAB DON'T STOP UNTIL YOUR HIGH AND DRY. worry about the canoe, and gear later. .... trust me, you can't stand up in moving water and your not going to stop the river!! .....it's not a carnival ride! you can't just wave your hand and make it stop. i don't want to just sound -off . but it saddens me to think that a life was lost . a little boy waring a life jacket was pinned to the bottom of an overturned canoe! and with a small amount of simple basic river safety , it would have been a better day. I DON'T WANT TO EVER READ ABOUT ANYONE OF YOU GUYS OR YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS GETTING HURT . SO BE SAFE ,THINK ABOUT WHAT GOING ON.

you want some good stuff! try the section above that ~(~> it's worth the time, and effort. ( and do a U-turn at the big feeder..on river right) it's a great over nighter!
-
up date..>> warning... that same low hanging tree is still there! and two others are down across most of the river above ozark as of last weekend . they are a real hazard at low water because you are pulled in to them , with know way to avoid them, and know way of seeing whats going to happen to you if you drift a little too close.. the rangers have cut some small branches off, but the main trunk and forked limbs of this strainer still remain. the other two still have green leaves on them and are some what camouflaged into the riverbank and you don't see the water rushing under the trunk of the tree until you get right on top of it..
-
this was the second load of fish... the first load hit the little buffalo 4 to 6 weeks ago, but your not suppose to know !
-
this weekend the water should be back to clear, had a great trip on friday missed the rush and got on the water mid-morning .and i should have waited until about 3 or 4 , the late afternoon bite was a ball!! never saw another person fishing the whole time i was on the river. but it was a hot one !! got back to the campground just in time to get (flash flooding in my tent).. it rained all night ,and part of the morning. and that made for some pretty muddy water that came up ! NOTE** there is a big tree almost all the way across the river just above ozark campground that you will have to walk around with low water levels ...

Need Help With Lower Unit
bobber replied to bigredbirdfan's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
milky oil? => water seeping in through a seal ...( pull off your prop and look for fishing line around the prop shaft) .but replace the stainless steel cotter pin, never re-use the old one. then re-check your oil after your outing.. if it's milky again, in most case's you can go to any marine dealer and have a vacuum and pressure test done.... but you caught it, before it gets bad. -
floated from eurbie to pruitt in just under 2 hours! and then went back up to ponca and floated to kyles landing.... you bet that water was high, and muddy brown.but floating the head waters in july doesn't happen ,( some one in our group said it was at least 20 years that they could remember) and i just couldn't let that chance slip by...
-
floated from hasty, to woolum. (water was good for fishing) but it did have come color to the water from the rain storm.( this is a great section.)i thought i was going to get blown off the riverbank around 4:30 am sat. and then i was really sure my tent was waterproof, not just mist resistant! but the soggy-wet feeling of the wind blowing the tent down on top of me in the wee morning hours kind of had me thinking that i should have car camped instead!! the good part was the very early, and late afternoon bite! and that made a good weekend even with a rain storm ....

the way that river lays-out... the upper section( boxley/ponca to eurbie/ozark) is the whitewater sections, at water levels in the neighborhood of 0-to-15 inches of air space below the low water bridge at ponca . (note*and this is the only air space measurement).. 1ft.9inches= or below 28 inches, your pulling the canoe down the rock gardens(rapids without water) this is also the section of river that the bluffs tower above you like a caynon.. as you move down river to say, the middle part, pruitt to hasty/carver ,mt.hersey/woolum, bakersford, tylerbend( showers) 65hwy( grinders ferry )gilbert. you still have some very large bluff wall ,and levels need to be above 4.5 ft. anything lower and you really need to pick the right lines, or some dragging will occur. and for the lower section, the maume's north, and south, spring creek, hwy 14(dillard's ferry) buffalo point(showers) ranger station , then rush , the last take-out before the wilderness section to the white river. you with me so far? ok, at some lower levels it's harder to avoid over hanging trees, or root balls due to the current of water going smack dab into them. making for a good hazard, and almost all of the buffalo is a class II ( fast moving water with hazards) so paddling with the wife, kids, and a dog, now how well do you paddle? if you grab at the gunnel's or freeze as to plow into the rocks, or reach-out and grab at branches. the upper sections aren't for you! from hwy65(grinders ferry) on down is more your style. i have floated this section in flood waters in the 8 to 9 foot range it's fun and fast, no rapids at all at that level, more just steering. ok, that being said, when paddling on any water , your out there on your own!!. and it's up to you to self rescue yourself . it's a wild river that changes all the time. and the force of the water is so powerful, it can fold-up a canoe to half the size it just was! right before your eyes. and it doesn't care who, or what was inside of it!!........that got you thinking? good. ( man' it's all about being safe! with the wife and kids) going in a group setting is always better than alone. even if you stay just behind another group you can watch to see whats going to happen so your ready to adjust or get out and walk the canoe through if need be. never listen to the people yelling GO RIGHT!( you look) and see if they are giving you false information just to see you dump over!! it sounds mean but it sure is funny to watch canoe after canoe dumping over>>>> http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=PYzTIkac23Q i know you are laughin'

it looked fishy! .. and now it's litter free for you guys! ...you won't be getting hung-up on any tires thats for sure.. but i would want to hit it in high water, the levels of last sat. were just right to float just fast enough, but yet low enough to be able to avoid the trees with ease..
