Yep,I know, may be ugly, but comfortable and I'm not the only one....This challenger was designed by a guy in Texas.....Function before looks..... -

Lancer, you are only a few miles away, kayaking is a fitness thing..We paddle Jacomo every Tuesday 6:00 pm... Or come by and see the boats etc..... Going with the heavier stuff this time... POLYESTER 11.6 oz. plain weave * 77" wide This fabric is tough, you can pull the thread really tight and it doesn't separate the weave.. This time doing a different stitch, the double corded stitch..... What ever fabric is used, the hands get tired from pulling and tugging to get wrinkles out...... The bow end done, the whip stitch is down the front of the hull.... This is as far as I got yesterday before my hands, neck, shoulders gave out, just have to finish up the stern and trim the inside of the gunnels...

Another camping trip last month....A lot of lookers and plenty of conversation about the camper and kayaks!

The rudder assembly is removable..The way it works, you move the lever to the direction you want to turn..
-
Moving right along....This boat is for a friend ho is in his 70's and has one of those 12' plastic Bass Protuperware boats....So I made up my mind to build him a real one. Even one he can take his little dog..... I decided since he doesn't have a place to store it at home, but maybe in his store in his work area hoisted to the ceiling..... http://www.whisperin...radingpost.com/ I am making it like a canoe. Could even be a tandem if removable seats are incorporated.... Progress...Mapping out 2 forms in the 4' space for and aft of the center form is a challenge..

After a little over a year, doing another one....My 11th SOF... Another fishing boat, only this is for a 265 lb. person..... I am tweaking the plans I used for mine, increasing the beam by 14% about 4'' from 27'' to 31''
-
Epoxy with graphite powder mixed in, then 3 coats rolled on, then when dry, lightly buff it out with a scotch bright pad....
-
I'm not sure what caused that...I have the same thing on my boat in a couple of places.....I guess the only way to get rid of the white glass cloth, is to sand down carefully to the cloth exposing it and cut it out with a razor blade and epoxy back over the spot... The best answer would be to post a picture on one of these forums...some of these guys are experts in this field... http://www.kayakforum.com/cgi-bin/Building/index.cgi/page/1/md/index/#m_190373 http://www.blueheronkayaks.com/phpBB2/index.php http://www.clcboats.com/forum/clcforum/

But the wood boats are easy to repair with thickened epoxy.....

A skin on frame fishing kayak..is next..... I made one of these 3 yrs. ago...This time I'm increasing the beam by 14% for a 265 lb. paddler.... Pics. of the last one here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mo_kayaks/sets/72157632283142018/ My cedar strip version I took to the Little Niangua....
-
Oh man it would be nice to have all that Algie cleared out, never saw it that bad there.... When.. I don't know when exactly...but....I got-a-go.......got-ta get back on the river.........This lake fishing round KC...any lake for that matter is for the birds...or should I say sucks...... What the heck is "Tx"? Some tournament?
-
This time I want to stay at Mikes.....Green Mills..... Incidentally, I found out years ago his uncle was my wife's boss..Small world....
-
I used mine on the Little Niangua on those long, slow moving sections....
-
Here are pics. of the earlier rudders I did, until I finally went to the aluminum blade...The interior workings are basically the same...You raise and lower the rudder with a pull rope....
-
Well, what ever kayak you fish out of, a rudder is awesome.....With not having to constantly paddle to correct the boat is one thing....Another aspect is in a slight breeze and say you want to cast along the bank just paddle up wind turn and head downwind and guide with your feet and fish away hardly ever needing to paddle at all...Once you use one as much as I have , I would never do without it in a fishing kayak... Foot controls, just push the stick side to side....

Any Native Ultimate Kayak Owners Here?
woodman replied to Forsythian's topic in Lodging, Camping, Kayaking and Caoneing
You guys and your "Tupperware Boats" It is so simple to build a Stitch and Glue boat, something to be proud of that you built yourself......I just dont get it ...Why people gravitate towards "Heavy kayaks" anything over 40 lbs......Heck I even offered to teach and have a workshop for FREE...with NO response....GO to CLC website and you will see women building them in their apartment!... .......What no one owns a jig saw, a drill, little hand sander? what..... -
Jim what part of the Elk did you fish?
