Has anyone been bluegill fishing? If so, have you been catching any nice ones yet? Last year it seemed like July was hot for the big ones on the gravel flats. I'll probably try it this weekend.
Well, we had an awesome week fishing at Table Rock. We cleaned well over 150 bluegill ranging from 7 1/2 to 9 1/2 inches. They were all caught in 18-20 feet of water on the gravel points and gravel flats around the dam and Indian Point areas. We were using nightcrawlers fishing on the bottom just drifting and trolling in the 18-20 foot range. We also caught several spotted and smallmouth bass on ultralights. What a blast! One spotted bass was 3 pounds. We released the bass but had a great fish fry with the bluegill. Good to know the big ones are still in there. For whatever reason, the fishing was really good the first part of last week and the last part of the week was slow. Probably due to the cold front and rain that came in on Wednesday? I would have figured it would have stabilized by the end of the week, but it was still slow. Most of the gills were big males with lots of color. A few females had eggs that looked like they were spawing. Have the bluegill spawned this late and that deep in the lake in years past?
Anyone have any pointers on catching bluegill around the Indian Point area? I"ll be fishing there all week and would like some fish to clean. About 10 years ago, we fished Table Rock and used night crawlers in the standing timber to catch some big ones. Can they still be caught there? Any info would be appreciated.
Has anyone tried catching any spawning crappie in the lower lake? The water temps should be about right. I talked to a bass fisherman last year coming out of Empire Park and he said he caught a lot of crappie in the 10-12 inch range last spring on the shoreline. I'd like to try it and see. What are the water temps running in the lower lake? Are the bass up shallow yet? Thanks.
Has anyone been doing any crappie fishing with the high water? What are the water temps out there? I am sure this cold front set them back a bit. I'll start trying them next weekend if it warms up.
I just got off the phone with the Corps, the following ramps are open:
Cow Creek, Long Creek, Combs Ferry, Mill Creek, Cape Fair, Campbell Point, and Eagle Rock.
Has anyone been catching any crappie on Table Rock yet? If so, what depths are they holding in? I'd like to try it this weekend, but don't really know where to start. Thanks.
What kind of top water lures were you throwing?
Had any luck with crappie this winter on Taneycomo?
I've got some friends coming in town next weekend and they want to catch some trout. What kind of lures or baits have the rainbows been hitting on around the cooper creek area?
Thanks for the info.
Check out this link. They'll be updating the map soon with the new brush piles they put in this fall in the James River Arm.
