  1. Right on! My wife and I are planning a trip to Colorado sometime in August or September...probably going to either Durango or Pagosa Springs for a few days. Heavily pressured water but lots of places to fish and the wife can do stuff in town while I fish in the mornings Phil, if they shut down the water at Tenkiller on a sunday...I'll shoot you a message and we can car-pool out there if ya want? Or shoot me a message when you're going and I'll see if I can make it. I'll also let ya know if I'm sneaking off for a day-trip to Missouri to fish Capps, Crane, or Roaring River.
  2. He's just trying to hog all that low water to himself when he knows darn good and well that all of us from the Tulsa area are about to go crazy due to the constant generation on the Arkansas and I can imagine that most of the trout streams in Missouri are either un-fishable or near that... I've been checking the water just about every day for the past couple of weeks on the Arkansas and Lower Illinois, just to see what they're generating at. Then the 1 DAY that I don't check it, they don't generate at Tenkiller! Figures! I woulda made a mad scramble down there to fish because I don't work on Mondays, dang it! I'm almost to the point that I'm going to say screw it...buy a spey rod...and start heaving big clousers into the local waters! I've gotta catch something on the fly stick soon...or I'm going to go nuts! Guess I could always go pond fishing for largemouth
  3. You won't miss it....just walk upstream of tan vat. There's a long section of slack water just above the 1st run at Tan Vat...once that slack section ends upstream, you're at the beginning of the rock garden area. You'll know it...lots of nice riffles, eddys, and seams behind big boulders. Lots of fishy water....trust me, you won't miss it. I will say I never threw any streamers on our trip. I tossed a big nasty mohair leech when the water came up for a while...fishing it on the swing in the runs or in the tailouts. Didn't have any luck but the river was REALLY up, off-color, and moving at that point!
  4. The fish were completely jumping out of the water to eat Caddis flies when we were there too...but they'd also eat them as they were skating across the surface of the water. The rising water probably had the fish off a little bit. The last day we were there, the river finally came up from all the rain and got really off-colored. The bite turned off really quick...plus there were no bugs coming off so no rising fish either. Try that area upstream from Tan Vat and try the area below Tan Vat again if the water is back down. We caught lots of fish out of those first 2 runs below Tan Vat. Besides dries...caught them on glo-balls, san juan worms, and prince nymphs....
  5. That's crazy that you had no luck with the brassie or the hare's ear? Was the river up at all? We fished that same area a few weeks ago and killed fish on Elk Hair Caddis. We were targeting rising fish too. Not really sure what to think on what you mighta been doing wrong. Next trip...go upstream of Tan Vat and fish the "Rock Garden" area. Its a decent hike upstream but nothing like walking all the way to baptist. Lots of good water up there...but it does help if you can fish flies under an indicator.
  6. Nice fish there! Is it grown up real bad already? Heh, what was the snake count for the day? What flies did you use in the high water?
  7. How did you do at Little Piney? We were going to fish Mill and Little Piney during our trip a couple of weeks ago to the Current but the rain kept us away... Just curious as to where you fished and how good the fishing was. I really wanna fish this stream...
  8. Might be decent where it enters the Arkansas as some sand-bass might run up it to spawn but I wouldn't hold my breath. Sections of Polecat run right through my area (just a few miles away) and its pretty much crap. Now, if you like setting bank poles or limb-lines for catfish...then its usually pretty decent... Might check it out....then let us know
  9. Glad to see I'm surrounded by anti-sooner folk! Always a good feeling! We really enjoyed fishing the Current...I had an absolute blast! I loved the fact that its a smaller river thats easily wade-able and fishable everywhere, well at least around the Tan Vat access. I think we were lucky enough with the weather that we seen VERY FEW other anglers. I think we seen 4 guys on friday afternoon and 1 other guy on saturday. Had the whole river to ourselves...so it gave you that "remote" feeling as you hiked your way up or down stream. I'm anxious to get back very soon and try to catch the caddis hatch again. Catching that many brown trout on dries was freakin' awesome. I will have to go check out the area around Baptist. We hiked pretty far down from Tan Vat sunday....I bet we were pretty close to the access. There was still lots of good looking quality water that far down...

  12. WOW! SOONERS? Man, those are fighting words! You're looking at 3 Oklahoma State University graduates in the above pictures! Go Pokes!! It was a great time and great fishing. Is the water around Baptist access look as good and fish as good as the waters above and below Tan Vat?? We never even made it down to Baptist this weekend....maybe another trip sometime!
  13. 4/17 We arrived at Eagles Park campground on friday around 1:00. Set up camp, had lunch, and then geared up. The area surrounding the Current River is very beautiful. I was really impressed with the area. We got on the water around 2:00 at the Tan Vat access and started fishing our way upstream. We picked up a few fish here and there in the first section of water on san juan worms. Almost stepped on 2 snakes in the process...scared the crap outta me! We hiked upstream to the "Rock Garden" area and started fishing our way back downstream. This area has some real quality water. Big huge boulders with deep holes, nice riffles and runs, easy wading, and lots of fish! We caught a few fish here and there on san juan worms, prince nymphs, and glo-balls. Fishing was kinda slow as it was a sunny blue sky day and we were learning new water. They were kinda picky on your drifts though...had to get a good drag free drift and lots of mending. We worked for the fish we caught. We were working our way downstream at around 5:30 or so, we saw several fish beginning to rise throughout some of the holes...nothing really consistant, just a random rise here n' there. About 6:00, swarms of bugs were coming down the river...it was pretty crazy. I couldn't tell what they were to be honest...I'm not a bug expert. I can tell you what a mayfly and a stonefly is....and thats about it. The fish were really starting to rise at that point. We grabbed a few bugs outta the air and compared them to our dries in the fly box. The rest of the evening was spent casting dries to specific rising fish...it was quite amazing. You had to get a good drift to get them to eat but they would explode on the fly. It was a good time. We ended up with around 25 fish between the 3 of us for the evening. A good mixed bag of browns and rainbows. 4/18 After breakfest, we headed back to Tan Vat to fish downstream of the access. We started at the 1st run right after the riffle below the access point. I picked up a few fish on glo-balls, prince nymph, and a sow-bug pattern I tied up. Derek and cole caught a few on San Juans. Around 10:00, the bugs started to swarm again! Fish were rising again...nothing consistant but just every few minutes they'd pick up a bug. We all switched to dries again and never tied on anything else the rest of the day! I caught almost all my fish on an #16 Elk Hair Caddis while Derek and Cole caught their fish on #14 Parachute Adams and Parachute PMDs. The Elk Hair Caddis and PMD looked very similiar to the bugs when they were flying and when they would skate across the top of the water but I really don't know what bug was hatching off. We fished our way down river picking up fish everything. It was amazing and was honestly the best dry fly fishing I've ever had. Even beats the beetle/ant fishing at Roaring River in the summers. 95% of our fish were browns, ranging from 12"-16". Cole had a big brown rolls on his Parachute Adams...had to be atleast 18 inches. It was a toad but Cole missed him. We kept fishing downstream for the rest of the day. We called it quits at 4:30 but the fish were still rising everywhere as we walked back upstream. We ended up with around 40 fish that day between the 3 of us and I can't even begin to think how many fish we missed. It was a great day. I snuck back out right before dark to the 1st hole below Tan Vat and picked up 3 more browns in about 20 minutes and missed twice as many. Cole fished just above me in the hole right at the access and picked up 2 while missing several. 4/20 All I got to say about sunday is high murky water and only a few fish. We walked downstream a long ways and fished our back up only bring a few fish to hand. The rain had finally came down enough over the previous day and last night that the river was really coming up. We went back to camp and loaded up. We had hopes of fishing Little Piney River on sunday and then finish up at Capps and Crane on Monday as we were making our way back to Oklahoma. The weather changed those plans as we figured everything would be flooded out on those smaller streams. So we packed up and headed home. It was a great weekend with awesome dry fly fishing. I can honestly say that I have a new favorite trout stream. I loved everything about the Current. Besides fishing the San Juan in New Mexico...I've never had so much fun fishing for trout. I've fished the tailwaters in Arkansas and Taneycomo....but the Current just really struck a chord with me. I can see why so many people love to fish it! I will be back very soon!
  14. Hopefully the rain will taper off over the next week or so. Maybe then we'll get lucky and see some lower generation levels at Zink. If so, I'm there man! I'm going to start keeping my gear in the truck so I can hit up Zink after work if the waters right! I'll post on here when I'm going...
  15. Thanks for the input guys...I think we've got it all lined out on what we're doing on the Current. I'm really excited to fish this river. I just hope the rain doesn't mess the water up too much...
  16. I got down there around 3:20 after work. Got all geared up with waders, boots, and pack....started to put my rod out of my tube and realized I'd left my darn reel at the house on the fireplace mantle. I was POed at myself. I was in such a hurry this morning throwing my gear in the truck and trying to not be late for work that I just ran off and left it... The water looked great when I got there but by the time I drove the 30 minutes home to get my reel...the water had already risen back over 1000 cfs so I decided against going back to Zink. Phil...the next time the water is down drop me a message or I'll send you one...we'll do some fishing! Sounds like you were fishing the right areas with the right presentations...the fish mighta just been off today with all the high water we've had. I usually catch at least a few fish in the big hole in front of the low water dam even if it is a little crowded. Just gotta dodge all the lead flying by your head from the bucketeers!
  17. Woohoo...Zink is at 752 cfs and still dropping. If it keeps dropping, I'm going out there at 3:00...should be fishing by 3:30 if anyone wants to come out and fish with me. I'll be in my lil' go-kart truck (white Isuzu P'up) since my wife has my Dodge today...
  18. Great...well, depending on how fast the water drops at Zink...it MIGHT be fishable in the morning. Won't be worth a crap by the time I get off work....man that sucks. I was starting to get excited about the idea of chasing some stripers again... This really stinks...stupid rain! stupid engineers! Ok, I'll get off my soap box... Guess I'll have to go check out the local city lake in my little pond-hoppin' boat...see if the largemouth will take an interest in some poppers or deceivers...
  19. I've been watching the USGS site...the generation levels at Zink are dropping dramatically today. Its been cut in half in the last few hours. We might get lucky and get a period of no generation before this next storm moves in Sunday. Or they might just be screwing with us.... Either way, I'm probably going to pack my gear with me tomorrow for work. If its fishable tomorrow afternoon...I'm heading to Zink at 3:00. Should be fishing by 3:30...
  20. If you go to this website, it will give you current generation at Zink Dam. Obviously, if they turn off the water at the darn...it takes several hours before the water drops at Zink. http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?cb_00065...ite_no=07164500 Pretty neat site to look at generation tables....been really handy for me since I only live 30 minutes away.
  21. As far as flies go...throw clousers and deceivers at them. White/silver or white/chart seem to work the best. Best way to access the place is to park across the street from the pedestrian bridge at 21st and Riverside...then just find a good place to walk into the river. The fish hold in various places below Zink. I always had luck with the deeper holes and slack water...stripping in your flies at various speeds. Check water flows on the USGS website...you want it below 500-750 cfs for prime wading conditions and most places arent much over waist deep for the most part. When the water comes back down...just post when you're going fishing and most of us local to Tulsa would be up for going....
  22. I've got the MDC map off the MDC website...just not sure where we should park and walk in. I'm thinking we'll probably park at the bridge off the county road and then walk upstream just to check it out. Surely there's a few fish hiding out in the creek. A couple recent reports show some fish being caught. Who knows, we might just pass it up and go elsewhere. Or just spend another day on the Current River...
  23. Just curious if anyone has fished or even been by Mill Creek lately? I would think with the rain and snow we've got in the past few weeks that the creek should have plenty of water. I wonder how the fish are doing? Some friends and I are considering fishing it next weekend. Where's the best access point at?
  24. Too much water to use a fly rod I would think... Probably have some luck with a surf rod...haha!
