I am happy that so many have responded to my query about Kayak Fishing. I have already received some valuable information from the posts. I hope this becomes a regular forum that we can check back on and get more information about this platform for fishing. I would like to see information and reviews possibly about different kayaks and rivers/lakes that are kayak fishing friendly. Maybe some experienced hands would be willing to share tips with those of us just beginning or considering kayak fishing. As I said I have already gleamed some valuable information just from the posts already. By the way my screen shows me as Chestnut Lamprey and that is not me and I dont know how to get my own name in the profile area of the post. Well I am not a great big guy, just a little over 200# I am sure there is a difference in which Kayak you use depending on the water you will be on. I have no intention of doing white water style kayaking, but fishing on slower moving rivers would be my goal. We are considering moving to the South Florida coast within a few months and I hope to be able to fish the bays and a lot of "skinny" water for snook and redfish. But for now I just want to be able to drift fish or fly fish in the Little Red.

I have been seeing more and more programs on television where Kayaks are being used as personal platforms for fishing instead of the good 'ole boat. Does anyone on the forum utilize this method of fishing?? There seems to be several versions of a "fishing kayak" available. If you are using a kayak which do you feel it the best, sit in or sit on?? What length?? I am interested because I am not considering giving it a try.

One thing to do is to get the Trout Fishing Guide the state publishes because there are different regulations for the different rivers in Arkansas. It can be real confusing but if you read the regs for each river you can figure it out fairly easy. Good luck and have a good time. If they are not generating there is a long stretch below Kennedy park campgrounds that can be walked and parts of it can be waded.

Adam, The thing to remember is that Southwest Power is only part of the situation. The Corps of Engineers also have a say on whether the dam releases water or not. Unfortunately their decision is not published that I can find. With the lake as high as it is I would imagine that there will be some sort of release of water during the three days you listed. I have lived here now for 4 years and find that the only sure way to know is to just go look at the river and call the phone number at the dam to see if indeed they are running and if not when the last time they did. If you do not have that number it is 501-362-5150, you will get a recording that will provide up to date information. Mike Daughtrey

For sale or trade - 1984 Cajun Demon ii with an 80 hp Mercury, older morotguide foot controlled trolling motor. Boat is in decent shape, needs new lower walking deck area and carpet, a paint job would be nice too. Has two new pedestal seats, new deep cycle battery, new tires on trailer. Motor has new plugs and runs great. This boat will scoot across the lake. Although it needs a little time and effort to make it like new, it is lake ready the way it is. I would like to trade for a 12 - 16 ft flat bottom john boat with a motor and trailer, this boat is too big and heavy for trout fishing in the Little Red. I am gettin golder and need something a little lighter to load and unload, hahaha, I am asking the book value of the boat/motor/trailer of $1250 or trade for a john boat of equal value. Well after some back yard practice with my new rod I am ready to acutally try fishing with it. I purchased a few flies that some of the guys fisning said they were catching fish on, such as different colored wooly buggers, some sow bugs, red asses, and copper johns. Could someone give me a little advise on how to fish these different flies?? Which ones should I use a strike indicator with, and how deep should I be fishing (how far above the fly should I put the indicator) Any help will be greatly appreciated. As soon as it quits raining now I want to try out my new rod.

Last Thursday was my birthday. My son suprised me with a new Temle Fork Outfitters combo from the Little Red Fly Shop. It is a NXT 5/6 9' rod. It is really nice !!! Now all I need to do is learn how to use it and which flys to use on the river. They guys over at the Fly Shop were very helpful, and I will probably take a class or two from them. I am very excited and cant wait November to get here for the Brown spawn and some hot fishing. So if any of you local guys want to give a newbee a hand at learning how to fly fish let me know, I sure would appreciate it!!!!!

Yes there are several other places to fly fish on the Little Red, You should try Winkley Shoals ( its by the Swinging Bridge ) acces on either side of the river. Libby shoals is another easy access area with a nice stretch of the river at the shoal itself and below it, Cow Shoals is another easy access area to fish and there are usually alot of browns in that area. The river will clear eventually. The water is colored now because of the lake being so high for so long and the silt caused by that. Hope you try the river again, there are plenty of fish here/

For those of you close by you should know the river is extreemly fishable right now, The generation schecule is almost back to normal. The water is wadeable almost all day at one point or another on the river. The trout are hitting almost anything you throw in the water. There are millions of dragonflys over the river right now. I have seen trout come out of the water 2 ft or more to chase them. It is awsome to watch. Most of the fish being caught are around 10 to 13 inches but there are several bigger fish being caught too. In the last week alone I have managed to catch 8 nice fish in the slot, It is good to be able to get back to the old fishing habit again hahahahaha. Pack up your rods and head to the river for a great day of fishing !!!

I have a 1984 Cajun Demon II with an 80 hp Merc on it. Tilt and Trim, New pedastal seats, trailer with new tires, older motog guide foot controlled troller on it. Would value the rig at $1500 or trade for a decent 14-15 ft deep john with a 9-15 hp motor and trailer. The motor runs great, will push the boat fast down the lake, but I want something I can use on the Little Red. dont have pics as of yet but if you are interested I can probably send you a pic or two. The new ramp at Lobo is open and it is a very nice ramp now. You dont have to back so far down a narrow drive to unload anymore. The wife and I put our boat in the other evening without any trouble at all. Although we are bait fishermen we drifed from Libby Shoals to about a mile down from Lobo and only picked up one small fish. We ended up tieing up because the current was so strong with two generators running that anchofing would not have been the smart thing to do. We located a nice stump and tied up the bow and let the boat swing down river with the current. Within just a few minutes we were both landing some very nice 14 anf 15 inch rainbows. We found that they were feeding closer to the bank than we would have thought and that made it easier to cast and not have to worry about drifitng a heavy weight while tied up. The wife hooked and got a really nice fish to the boat but becme excited and tried to horse it before I could get the net under it and it broke her line. This fish was easily in the slot and from all appearnces was probably close to 20 + inches in lenght. Although she was very disappointed she did catch three more that were just under the slot. We are catch and release fishermen so they all went back in the river for another time of fun and fishing.

Is there any good places to bank fish on the White ?? My wife is handicaped to an extent and althought she can walk she has some trouble doing so. We bank fish the Little Red in the few places available to us. We dont have a boat suitable to put on the river up there yet. I understand that the water level is high. but it is here on the Little Red too. We have just adapted and still catch fish when lots of others can't. I would appreciate any information someone might be willing to share on a decent place to bank fish in either parts of the White, Beaver or Norfork.
