You are still about a month early for the spawn. Just because the crappie start to move shallow does not mean they are ready to spawn, it takes both the correct water temps and amount of day light. Not all crappie will spawn at the same time, obviously the farther up the lake you go the shallower and warmer the water will become, these fish will start first and then the spawning wave starts moving toward the main lake. That, however, does not mean you cannot get into a good mess of crappie, today!!! With the water warming the fish will start moving shallower, it may take a while to locate the fish but when you do it will be a blast. Currently the crappie are very scattered, no one depth or technique is magic. Saturday we caught crappie in 33 feet of water fishing 30 feet deep, we also caught crappie in 3 feet of water fishing 1 foot deep. The great thing about early spring is the warming trend, just as we like to be outside on a nice sunny 70 degree day, so do the crappie (or go shallower anyway, that they might enjoy it as well). Just remember the shallower the fish the more unpredictable they will be. Early in the year there are a lot of fronts and changing weather, what might work today probably will not work tomorrow. Get out, have some fun, rip some lips and let us know how you do! Brad

It's been a while, I've been out of town and a lot of the water has been hard, however I made it out Saturday. The back end of coves are still froze, however not enough to deter any fishing. We started out on the Lindley, had trouble locating fish and shad for the first two hours. I found one small ball of shad and we caught 8 fish under it, however that was all I found up the Lindley. Headed up the Pomme and found a lot of shad, the fishing was hot and heavy for the next hour and twenty minutes. We ended up with two limits, most of the fish were caught during a one hour stretch. We just worked down the bank, edge of the channel along a bluff. When we found shad we would catch 6-10 very quickly, then would keep going down the channel until we found more shad. Sometimes the shad were just 20 yards apart, other times they were 100 yards apart. All total we probably caught 65-75 crappie. Fished 20-30 feet of water, 16-25 feet deep. All fish caught on 1/8th oz blue jigs. Brad

I know what you mean. I love to go to Lake Fork in January, however the fishing has been so good on Pomme we couldn't leave.

Went back today. Fishing was great until the wind shifted and the front started coming through. I had 11 in an 1 1/2 hours, only keeping the nice, no doubters. I threw several keepers back. However when the wind came from the north (it started to blow like we were in Kansas), the temp fell drastically (or it felt like it). I fought it for about 30 minutes, the trolling motor was 3/4 of the way turned up and still kept getting pushed up on the bank. Decided to give it up and get back to the office.

Stacey, Your brother and I are planning on a trip on Saturday. Come on down and lets go! Thunderchicken, Good luck at Warsaw. I know this is a Pomme thread but let us know how it goes. Brad

Such a beautiful day I had to get out. Four of us went and each of us came back with our limits! We were fishing our typical winter time pattern. We hung close to the channel edges, fished brush, logs, rocks, etc... in 25-30 feet of water 16'-22' deep. The water has gotten much colder since the first of January, (parts of the lake just thawed a week ago), the biggest key is to fish slow. When you think you are fishing slow, slow down some more!!!! Used jigs blue and glow chartreuse (I'm sure other colors were working, just never put anything else on). I've been checking pre-spawn brush piles, the fish are starting to move to them. There are a few fish showing up on the graph and a few bites (not enough to have a productive trip). If the weather stays nice this transition will probably start picking up speed, if however we have more winter weather in store (can someone please shoot that groundhog!), it will take another 30 days or so. Good luck and hope your live wells are full! Brad

I've been too busy this summer/fall to get much fishing done. Just been going during the monthly tournaments and that is not near enough! Beautiful morning, cloudy, slight breeze so I headed to the lake - made it home with a limit, took about 3 1/2 hours. Here's the details: Water Temp - 62 Water Depth - 20'-30' Depth of Fish - 1'-2' feet off bottom Location: Pomme Arm - channel edges, anywhere there was brush, logs and junk Bait: Jig and only a jig Color: Blue, Blue and Blue - tried several colors and nothing else worked. Had to be some shade of blue, didn't seem to matter what shade. Caught several shorts, instead of being aggravated I'm grateful we have a good future crop. Some of the keepers were just fish, others were pigs, big pigs! Good luck and hope you get some. Brad
