I havent heard much about Hickory in a while, that could mean 2 things, either the fishing is really good or the fishing is really slow. Im afraid it might be the latter, but does anyone have any info? With my whitebass flyrodding winding down, Im going to try to come down next weekend and am looking for where to start or if I should head straight for Crane, or Capps. Thanks

I know with deer season the amount of us out there fishing drops off. Has anyone been out there chasing whites and hybrids lately? It has been about 3 weeks since I have, but I was doing well then. Took a 3 day trip and averaged about 75 fish between 2 of us a day. We were fly fishing dropping a streamer about 18 inches below a cork popper. Very few hits on the popper most fish on the streamer, and the majority of them were smallish, but we would find pockets of larger fish. Just wondered if anyone was still catching?

try this one too I have found it very helpful. I think one of the guys posted it on here before. http://www.animatedknots.com/indexfishing....imatedknots.com

I love how you can find largemouth and whites together on Pomme in the fall. I fish Truman mainly and when the whites are really going you dont find the largemouth except for in a few spots.

What did you catch your hybrids on? I am going to be down for a 3 day trip with my brother next week. I hope we get some good wind, and it seems like the size of the fish might get bigger if the weather cools off a little. This time of year sometimes the worse the weather the better the fishing.

I fished for 2 hrs today from noon to two. Not the best 2 hrs of the day to fish necessarily but it didnt matter today. The wind was really coming in from the south so I headed right to some points with great southern exposure (between the hwy 7 bridge and the long shoal swimming beach. I was on foot so that was the only area I hit, I got 15 whites and kept 6 nice big ones. They were hitting a small yellow and white clouser minnow dropped about 18 inches behind a cork bodied popper. I was fly fishing. Short trip, but a lot of fun.

That was a good report. I was down on Sat and Sun and fished in the Long Shoal area. As you said without the wind Sat they were hard to find. On Sunday though we did great from 7:30 to 10:00 am. My son and I stayed on one point, because no boat, and the fish were coming fast enough to keep us there. It did seem like they would move out and another school would move in as they would turn off for 20 min or so then we would pick up 3 or 4 more. In all about 15 for me and between 5 and 10 for him. But he took the cake by catching 2 whites at once. I was Fly fishing with a popper and a small streamer dropped off of the back. So I tied a streamer on the back hook of his tiny torpedo and on his 2nd cast he landed 2 small whites at once. He smiled for at least a half an hour non stop.

You are right on Bill. I have been a conventional tackle chaser of whites on Truman and Pomme for years. Recently I was converted into a fly fisherman after a couple of trout trips to the mountains in Wyoming. Now I am chasing my favorite fish on fly and Truman is my favorite place to do that. Maybe Ill see you out there.

Its a 99 or 2000. The whole lower unit is shot, a tooth or broke off of one of the gears and chewed the whole thing up inside. A reman will cost about 1500 installed. I know its killing me the boat isnt worth anything without the motor and the engine is in fine shape but the lower unit is shot, and fixing them is darn expensive

No, I havent ever fished a tournament. My boat, when running would get me laughed at with all those shiny decal wrapped rigs. I have a 16' alum lowe with a 50 hrs johnson. But other than family and work fishing is what its all about, and I live close to Truman. This fall, until I can save the scratch to fix the lower unit you might see me wading and flyfishing some whites out on the points. Hopefully the boat will be fixed by the time the largemouth start hitting topwater next spring back in the creeks. If you see me stop and say hey. Just dont run over me out there. lol

If the wind is blowing the main lake points will be the ticket, try pop-r's, chug bugs, roostertails, anything shad like top or bottom. Word is this week the largemouth bite has been back up in the creeks and long narrow coves on the secondary points for largemouth. The thing about Truman I have found when fishing for whites when they really get going in the fall, the Largemouth are in different areas. There are only a few spots that I have found them mixed together. With the weather set to change this week the whites should get going on the points for real. Early forecast for next weekend has partly cloudy and highs in the 60's (lets hope windy too as I will be down there too). Good Luck!

Was it an ultralight spinning outfit? I lost one overboard with a nice little Cardinal reel a couple falls ago. If it is I hope you like it. LOL

Thanks Tim. Thanks for all the info, hope to run into on crane, Ill be there Thurs morn.

Countdown has started, Im changing oil in the truck and topping off all other necessary fluids, and unnecessary fluids also. How is the creek looking this week? Has anyone been by it, fished it? Same for Capps and Hickory if anyone knows?

So how long does the fishing stay decent after it is stocked? I plan on hitting Hickory on Friday. Hope to catch a few, but even if I dont, I dont get too many chances to fly fish for trout, so I will enjoy no matter what the outcome.

Great looking fish, I bet he gave you a tussle.
-
I hope I have a good report to give you, Ill keep doing the no more rain dance until I get down there.

Thanks Tim for the info. I made reservations today and we are going to be down there Wed. - Fri of next week the 9th, 10th, and 11th. I think we'll hit Capps the first day and then Crane on Thurs, and Hickory on the way back home on Friday. Hope you guys dont get much more rain down there, and hopefully Crane looks alright to fish by then. I appreciate your reports.

Ive been planning. Okay, Ive been doin' some map studyin'. What Id like to do is find an RV park in or near Monett and spend 2 nights 3 days. First day fish Crane Creek which looks to be about 20 min or so from Monett. Day 2 fish Capps which looks 10 minutes or less from Monett. Day 3 fish Hickory which looks to be about 20 min east of Monett. Im looking at Pine Trails RV ranch on HWY 60 Seems to be somewhat centrally located and reasonably priced anything closer to Branson the price goes way up. Does all that sound about right? Does anyone know anything about that campground? My other option is to stay at the Morse park campground in Neosho and do a bit more driving to get to Crane. Tried to call the campground number for morse park and I think it was parks and rec and I called Friday after 5, I will try monday morning to see if I can find out more info. Im really looking forward to trying to catch a few trout

Thanks for the info guys. I have a camper, so that would probably work out. and swimming for the kids is a plus. Im not sure when I can get down. I do have the whole week after the fourth off but we have already cancelled the previous plans due to high gas prices and tight budget. Summertime is a crummy time to have the money run short. If anyone knows how much the campsites are in the park that would help a bit, (the wife is a planner, details, details, details.) If I dont get down there that week, I definately will when fall rolls around.

I still want to get down to try out Hickory. Sounds like fishing hasnt been too bad so far this summer. Can you guys tell me anything about the campgrounds there? Ive heard there arent much for facilities, which is ok, but is it a decent place to camp with the family? I wouldnt mind bringing the boys down for the weekend and hitting Hickory and maybe Shoal.

Does it include throttle and steering? or is it a Tiller?
-
Thank you. I will definately keep Hickory in mind for the C&R season. I have been looking for a way to keep fishing through those long cold winter months. I would love to catch some smallies or largemouths down there though, hows the fly fishing for smallmouth? Also I would love to catch some of those McClouds on Crane. How far from Neosho is that? They are beautiful. It reminds me a little of the little wild cutthroat and cutbows my brother and I were catching in the mountains in Wyoming last summer. They weren't real big, but they were WILD, and they were beautiful.

Great thanks for the info! I will be down probably 2 weeks from tomorrow probably just with my fishing buddy, (leave the family at home until I get to know the area). Id love to find some smallie spots too. Are they close to Hickory? What should I bring to catch them. As far as I can tell for trout in Hickory it looks like attractor patterns, how about maribou jigs? Do they ever take a dry fly? Thanks again, Im so glad I found this sight what a great place to share with other addicts like myself.
