  1. Planning a couple of streamer trips this winter. First time to NFOW. I have an 8 WT with sink tip to throw big meat I use on the White, but want to also take 6 WT for small/med stuff. Is a sink tip needed for 6 WT on NFOW, or can I use Floating line. Also, anyone have a recommendation for good sink tip coming off 6 WT Helios?

  2. Made it out for a few hours Saturday evening in the pt 4 area with the fly rod chasing bass. Caught 7 on deer hair poppers on outside trees in 20 - 25 feet of water. None over 2 lbs. Did lose a nice ~ 4 lb largemouth .........twice on the same cast with a weinee trout hook set both times. Could not believe the crazy boat traffic but did not seem to knock them down.

  3. I am just taking the fly rods next weekend and plan to fish very early and very late to avoid the crowds. Hoping to find Stripers (or spots) on top to < 20 FOW. F&F and others, does point 4 to point 6 sound like the right area? Thanks

  4. Did you try a pupae in the film? Oftentimes I have found fish keying on emergers and ignoring adult caddis on the surface. Not sure if you fish a dropper in Mo. But an unweighted pupae pattern trailed off an Adult can be money. I love fishing caddis hatches!!!

  5. Post your guess here to the winning big fish for the Oakley Big Bass Tour KVD Big Bass Classic on Table Rock March 26/27th. Closest to the winning weight will win a pair of Oakley polarized XLJ glasses valued at $210. You must post your guess here to this thread on or before Friday the 25th of March. You can see results after the event at www.oakleybigbass.com

I'm out on the prize but I'll start the guess at 8.50lbs.

    Good luck!

  6. I have the Half Jacket XLJ with the black irridium lenses. I have been looking at the 580's myself, but I sure like the Oakleys. Very good for site fishing and the interchangeable lenses are nice for when I jump on the lake.

Zack, I sure do prefer copper colored lenses for stream fishing. I am very pleased with tri optics from Orvis.

  7. That fish was caught at dusk, but took me a while to get it in. We where in deep water and my friend was in the front of the boat still chasing fish on the trolling motor, took awhile to get that one in, it was a great fight. I was a little worried about letting it go, but she/he went back with not problems. I have had all my luck on clousers, have tried other type of flies including poppers, etc, but the clouser seems to be the go to fly with either gray or white or blue and white being the colors I like best. I have also tried sinking line, but me and my buddy now just use floating line because the sinking line is so hard to pick up for quick cast when they are busting/moving around the boat. I also think that when you are chasing surfacing fish there is no real need to go any deeper that 4-5 ft. I fish spring from mid april through May looking for the top water action, I also have not had much luck blind casting. We have also tried using a zara spook or red find without hooks as a teaser bait to try to get the fish in closer, but usally have some type of malfunction with line getting hooked on a cleat happens and we do not get the fly in front of the fish, but I really think that this would work to get thoes fish so excited that anything that looks like a shad is going to get hit. Good luck this year post if you hook up.

Thanks JB for the info. When in doubt I always fish clousers and have caught redfish, northerns, and my biggest brown to date on them. will be sure to post anything I can figure out this year.

  8. I try to do a little each year, but with limited success. I have managed to get 3-4 in the boat in the last couple of years, but nothing to big just yet. Here is one I had last year a fairly nice hybrid, and the biggest true striper I have ever had on a fly was only about 6#s. Biggest fish we put in the boat with a fly rod was a really nice hybrid I would have guessed between 8-9#s, may have been bigger no scale in the boat that day.

JB, that pic looks like night fishing".........would you mind telling me time of year ? And what flies have worked for you? Thanks!,,,,

  9. Full sinking lines and large articulated streamersm I have used a white/grey Zoo cougar and got one or two on the reel.

We need to hook up this year and mess around on the lakes. I am getting my 6 and 8 weights setup with new reels and lines for lake fishing.

    Zack,

Sounds like a good idea. I have place at lost bridge and plan to start coming down regularly next month. Have you tried looking for them up shallow at night? I will send you a note when I am coming down. I really want to hit it hard in may after I get back from the caddis hatch in Colorado.

  10. This is the year I am going to really put in the time to catch a striper on a fly rod. Has anyone had any success and want to offer any advice? Time of year, flies, etc. Thanks for helping with the learning curve!!

  11. This is secondhand info but I hear the mechanic is top shelf at Rogers Outdoor Sports on Walnut. They're an Evinrude dealer, too, so he'd be up on the ETEC engines.

Thanks Champ.that is who I had been considering, just wanted to get some opinions. I bought my boat out of state and live in Kansas. I keep it on my dock at Beaver and really need a local mechanic.
