Had a great time on our float on the 11P last week. We went from 19 to Riverton. The river was beautiful and the weather was excellent as well. Heck, Monday it got to 60 degrees, not bad for the last week in December. We camped two nights at Little Hurricane and then at Greenbriar (?). I didn't have much time to fish, but did spend a couple of hours just below Little Hurricane between the first and second rapids. They were really going after the white bugs landing on the water. Unfortunately I didn't have any dry flies. Per a lot of people's advice on this forum, I only brought along crawdads and heavy wooly buggers, which sank fast. The fish would just not take them, they were all up at the surface. I did however have some nymphs that did not sink quickly. I used the lightest color I had (tan). I used two of the same flies and dropped one off of the other. Pretty much if the fish didn't hit it when the flies hit the water, I pulled it back and cast it again. I only caught two rainbows, but was able to hook into an 18 inch male. This was only the second time out fly fishing for me, so when the 18 incher got on, I wanted to give him as much line as he wanted. It took me over 10 minutes to tire him out enough to reel him in. I couldn't stop shaking for an hour afterwards. It was so incredibly fun!!! I know some of you may disapprove, but I kept it and filleted him for dinner. It had a lot of meat and the four of us had enough to get a good taste. From now on though, I will catch and release. I just couldn't resist. Here is the picture of the fish.
