  1. just reading the latest Field and Stream with my lunch and read an article on this very topic. According to their stringent testing: Superline to Fluro : J knot
  2. I've caught 4 tiger muskies on my in-law's lake in upper N. Illinois and they've all be dynamite fighters. THe biggest was 27 inches, so no absolute monsters. Its funny, I fished that lake for a good 4 years and never caught one, then I nailed 4 in two weeks. Granny lives on a shallow cove offset from the main lake, must've just been the right conditions or something. First one I caught on a tx-rigged tube flipping docks for largemouth and it really surprised me. Was a short small one but about knocked the rod out of my hand. The next 2 came on swimbaits out in the middle of the cove, saw some big swirls/darting around and winged the big swimbait out as far as I could and they both took off like a tarpon, jumping and thrashing like mad as soon as I set the hook. Awesome strikes and fights! The 4th one was a funny one, I was in my canoe next to the dock, rerigging some lures and saw a bunch of baitfish go sailing out of the water about 15yrds away. Had a big white zoom fluke rigged up weightless...tossed it right where the bait jumped and just let it sink....THUMP. Line took off to the side, set the hook and had my 4th one on. For small fish, the sure can knock the crap out of a lure when they hit it, much like their cousin the pike. Always a welcome surprise, my next goal is one on my flyrod, havent been up to fish in a while though.
  3. been up to Hayward WI the last 5 summers. Only one musky hooked up (that we know of) by our whole party that was lost at the boat. If we'd been using fly fishing gear I think we'd be one less hookups Seen a few follows, lost some big fish i still have nightmares about, no idea what they were. I'll stick to normal big game tackle to catch my first, then I'll work on my flyrod. Godspeed on your quest! It ain't the fish of 10,000 casts for no reason.
  4. nice fish! I will scour the banks until I find that stick and I'll be wearin' em out!
  5. good to know! Always looking for a new spot relatively nearby to the city. About burned out on my city lakes.
  6. havent been to that body of h20 yet but been meaning to, would love to know if its worth the effort.
  7. It is a bit of a stretch to label them sex offenders. I believe 'round Mardis Gras there was a push to lower the fine or change the wording because its not usually fair to call the vast majority of folks offenders. Lazy, dumb, maybe incontinent, but...
  8. I bet that was a good fight on that setup! Get a good pic when you land one of those dinosaurs!
  9. I know they enjoy my crankbaits that imitate minnows as I've lost a number of lures to them.
  10. Forgive me, I inferred that this thread was complaining about someone exclaiming their excitement over catching a few filets for dinner.
  11. I'm all for people doing what they enjoy and having a good time doing it. Who am I to tell them how to behave? I prefer to mind my own business.
  12. incredible pics, thanks!
  13. Here here! We're SO close with #1. He's el hombre with the Zebco already, casting and reeling in hookless frogs and plugs, just gotta hammer home the fact that hooks are 'bad' and we'll be golden He's already mastered reeling in anything I get hooked up, cant remember the last time I actually landed a fish myself. Gotta love it. We went out to our farm over the weekend and fished a few hours Friday night. He woke up Saturday morning about 5:45am and popped up in bed: "Daddy, can we go fishing?" "when Mr Sun comes up buddy."
  14. LOL, that's exactly right. I just looked at the receipt, we bought it in summer of '05...time flies. Sure has been gathering dust with a toddler and a new baby arriving any day.
  15. I got a Guide 147 @ Dicks for $399.98 a few years back ($430 after taxes). Sometimes they have just crazy steals on stuff like that. you can almost always find some sort of coupon for that place too. I do most of my shopping at Bass Pro for tackle, seem to forget about Dick's most of the time.
  16. SmallmouthJoe~ Not sure how long ago you bought it, but BPS will do price matching, if you JUST got it you might be able to get them to make up the difference, cant hurt to try.
  17. and I though my weekend of breaking up fights between my 3 yr old and 6yr old nephew was bad.
  18. Might be a rough weekend (high water) if the weather stays as predicted. Weatherman predicting rain all day tomorrow, 1/2-1 inch of rain and all day rain starting Sat night continuing thru the day on Sunday. Keep your eye on the updates, hope it works out for you. Saturday looks nice at least! Tomorrow looks nasty:
  19. no kidding. Funny how things look when teams get changed...I cant even have a normal conversation with my father anymore. :yawn

Hey Al~ If you ever get a chance, you should swing by my uncle's place outside of Bozeman in Norris. www.norrishotsprings.com Great place to recouperate after a long day of fishing:) Great live music most of the time! My uncle is a mandolin maestro. They bought the place a few years back and have revamped just about everything there. Cheers.
