  1. A while back, and by while back I mean...10 or so years ago... I first discovered the Gets-it soft plastic lures. I always used to buy this certain color of tube jig from various different places around town. It was called Kentucky Killer....and that it did. (As well as largemouth) It became a go-to lure in my tackle box, and anyone who I let try it out. It was an almost milky blue color, with metallic and black flake. One day we ran out and went to pick some up...but NOWHERE carried it anymore. It was like they discontinued the production of that color. Does anyone know where I can find this color of tube jig, or if they even make them anymore? Thanks!
  2. my girlfriend and I decided to head up to a little farm pond I like to frequent when im too lazy to hitch up the boat. I was on the other side of the pond when she set the hook on this 4 pounder...(give or take) Ran across, and she had already landed it by the time I had the video camera opened. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhVypBrWckQ (Also, is there a policy against embedding videos on this board?) and due to my competitive nature... not to be outdone...(though i still think hers was bigger lol) lastly, a picture of that pond at dusk...

  4. just last weekend I was the best man in my friend's wedding down @ Roaring River state park. It had been years since I'd even attempted to fish for trout (I used to go with a friend who always knew what to use and where to go). The day after the wedding my girlfriend and I decided to buy trout permits...I have 2 ultra-lights that we both used. I went up to Bass pro shops and asked the gentleman behind the desk in the trout room for some good lures and advice to trout fishing...the basics if you will... So we drove down and tied on our flies and bobbers... I would like to think that I'm a fairly decent bass angler...but this trout fishing adventure humbled me. We were down there for 5 hours and neither one of us even had a bite! We were seemingly doing exactly what everyone else around us was doing (who were catching fish), but for some reason, we had absolutely no luck. At first, I had no interest in trout fishing ever again because I was so frustrated...but I realize that is silly, so now i'm reaching out to you guys, who I knooooowwwwwww are experienced trout anglers. I know these are broad questions, but; What are some common beginner mistakes? What are some helpful tips for beginner level trout anglers?
  5. now that I look at them I agree...maybe next time I'll have a fish fry!
  6. i dunno...this 4 pounder came out of the same pond last august...i've only been fishing there a handfull of times too, i think that pond could hold some hogs...
  7. nothing worth bragging about...my girlfriend out-fished me with the biggest one of the day...guesstimating 2 lbs still a beautiful evening for a first fishing venture of the year...
  8. Almost a year ago, a long time friend of mine called me up in the middle of work one afternoon. He was completely overwhelmed with emotion over the phone. I calmed him down for just long enough to ask him what was wrong. his brother had just been rushed to the hospital. He was in a mountain biking accident and was fighting for his life. Tyler Bare remained in a coma for 3 days, and was listed in critical condition upon regaining consciousness. Soon after coming to, Tyler was mortified to find that he couldn't move his legs, no matter how hard he tried. He had nearly severed his spinal cord in the accident, and was completely paralyzed from the waist down. Over the course of the next couple of days...Tyler remained in the hospital until he was in stable enough of a condition to where they could transport him to the Shriner's hospital in Chicago, Illinois...where he would undergo spinal reconstruction surgery. For hours the doctors operated on Tyler, and when the surgeon finally emerged from the operating room, the worst news possible was presented to his family; Tyler would never walk again. It was a crushing blow to the Bare family, and all of their friends. The news spread like wildfire... Even his high school (kickapoo high) took a moment of silence before school was in session the morning after they found out the news. In weeks following, Tyler had been learning to adapt to his wheelchair, and remained in a very healthy spirit considering his circumstances. Once an extremely active Senior of high school, now watching his hopes and dreams fly out the window. A month or so ago, Tyler woke up in the middle of the night to a bad dream. According to him, he sat up in bed and gasped. And immediately noticed that his right leg was halfway off the side of the bed. Although he couldn't move it back to it's position without the assistance of his arms and hands, Tyler had moved his right leg in his sleep...at least a couple of feet to the right. He yelled for his parents and they came rushing into the room...They were understandably thrilled to hear the news, and immediately called Tyler's doctor the next morning to ask if something like that is a normal occurrence in a paraplegic. The doctor was startled by the news and immediately scheduled a rehab analysis for a few days later... After only a couple of weeks of therapy...Tyler shocked/inspired everyone by walking with the assistance of bracers for the very first time in nearly a year!!! It's a gigantic leap in his recovery process and his family and friends are more than overcome with joy at the sight of their youngest son towering over them once again. Although he isn't completely out of the woods yet. It will more than likely still take months of therapy and re-training in order for him to be able to walk unassisted...and that is where the prayer request comes into play. Please pray for Tyler, for a speedy recovery...for his goal is to walk down the aisle this May for his high school graduation. Thanks for reading this...and if you wish to watch the video of his first steps since being paralyzed...click on the link below. sincerely, Daniel http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=...2713&ref=mf
  9. It's only the 4th of December...it's 18 degrees outside according to my thermometer on my window, and I already have "bass fever".... it's gonna be a LONG winter.
  10. I was invited to go fishing with a friend of mine, and his dad, who is a professional angler....or at least was a professional angler...i haven't spoken w/ either of them in years... anyways, we were out one chilly mid april morning, searching for some hawg largemouth, during pre-spawn at stockton. Around 3 or 4 hours after getting on the water...probably around 10am or so...we had already landed quite a few bass...nothing worthy of bragging about...but his dad soon landed a NICE 3-4 pound kentucky. With the competitive nature that I have, I became more determined to catch the largest fish of the day...I concentrated heavily with every cast, and made sure every hook set was clean. At one point i reached down to grab the bag of doritos laying on the deck, and almost as soon as reaching down, i felt a strong tug at my line...I knew i didn't have a good angle on the hook set, so i desperately raised my rod in the air, as quickly and aggressively as I could...leading to me rolling off the back of the chair, off the side of the boat and into the freezing water. I was back on the boat about as quickly as I had fallen in, even though I was now soaked from head to toe. managed to toss my rod into the hull before bailing off the boat though...my friend grabbed the rod and landed the monster 12 inch largemouth, that apparently got the best of me. we rode back in to the marina...i sat in the truck with the heat on for about 30 minutes, and I ended up wearing an extra pair of long johns and a rain gear for the rest of that day of fishing.
  11. Beautiful pictures....I'm jealous.
  12. Don't know if this is considered "photography" or not. But I thought I would share a moment of festivity from last night's adventures. Anyone else feel like sharing their Halloween pictures, Im sure that I/we would love to see them. To say the least, my costume choice had mixed reviews. My girlfriend and me.
  13. Pomme de terre river.
  14. a couple of weeks ago i went down to Springfield lake, below the dam for a little while. Didn't catch anything besides a funny picture and a good picture upon returning to my apt. that would be a tough hook set, wouldn't it? walking back inside.
  15. this one might be a little tough. good luck!
  16. no fishing involved. Just a family reunion. My aunt and uncle live on a beautiful piece of land, so i figured i would take some snapshots while i was there, during the downtime of the day. a cat i noticed, spying on me through the bushes. testing out the macro setting on my camera looking straight up at an old old oak tree. a beautiful late afternoon.
  17. A group of my me and my friends went to the northern US one summer, about 5 years ago. At lake of the woods. One guy's parents had a summer house on that lake...we did a lot of fishing that summer. Spent a lot of time hiking. He knew a bunch of locals, so there was always a group of people to hang out with too. One night we were sitting out on the dock with about 15 other people. Everyone had been drinking quite a bit that night too. Things were just starting to wind down for the evening, as a couple of people called it a night. When it finally came down to me and a couple of others...we were just about to load up the cooler with all of the empty beer cans, and head up the hill to the house. In mid sentence i noticed across the lake, there was a lime green spherical light, no bigger than 10 feet across...hovering just barely over the tree line. I pointed it out to my buddies. We all just sat there and examined it for a moment, and then decided that it was nothing more than some sort of beacon or tower light, considering it was stationary. All of a sudden it darted instantly a few hundred yards down the shoreline, at an extremely fast speed, although completely silent. To say the least, this baffled us. We had no idea what we were looking at. It remained stationary for about another 3-5 minutes, then lowered into the trees. Not to be seen again. We all were slightly puzzled over what we had just seen, although it posed no threat, therefore we shrugged it off and called it a night. The next morning we were cooking breakfast and the news anchor reported that a law enforcement car was followed by a mysterious green light, for almost 10 miles the previous night. Then disappeared into the sky. Im not going to say that what we saw, was an alien space craft, but what ever it was, defied logic...we weren't the only ones who saw it, and it definitely was unlike anything we had ever seen.
  18. I spent far too long on this diagram (in MS Paint, lol), and it still looks like crap...ah well, i will explain and hopefully you will understand. This is the best knot i have ever used, and extremely fast to tie. 1. Feed the line through the hole. Once it's about 8 inches through, feed it back through from the same side it just came out of.....creating a side A and B 2. Hold the two ends so that the hook centers itself between the two ends, equally. 3. wrap end B underneath end A......(exactly like the first step of tying your shoe laces). Once completed, do NOT tighten all the way yet! 4. This is what it should look like, not tightened all the way yet. 5. Pull end B down over the front of the hook, and all the way to the back side of the hook. 6. Once you have pulled the loop of end B over the hook....simply tighten the knot, by pulling firmly on end A. The hoop in end B, will become smaller and smaller as you pull the knot tighter. I hope this made some kind of sense to you guys... This is a very strong knot, and saves a lot of time in the boat. It can be tied on in about 10 seconds after becoming used to it.
  19. went out today with a friend, for a few hours this evening. Had pretty decent luck with all of the dink bass. Must have caught around 15-20 in a matter of a couple of hours. we found most of them in shallow water, directly adjacent to deeper water....such as fishing the shorelines on the main channels. Most of the bite was in the middle of the first descent to the bottom. Within the first 10-15 seconds of the bait being in the water, in about 3-5 feet of water. The bass seemed to be hitting EVERYTHING we threw at them. I started with a chartreuse gets-it (tube jig). After I lost that on a submersed tree branch, i tied on a texas rigged, 7 inch motor oil colored plastic worm. Used that for the remainder of the day. My friend started with a moccasin colored texas rigged 7 inch plastic worm, and eventually moved to a white skirted, colorado blade spinner bait. We both were getting bit all day long. If we had caught every bite we had, it would have probably amounted to double the amount of fish in our boat. Like I said, no monsters though. My friend lost a pretty decent bass on the spinner bait, but other than that, all of our fish were in the 12-14 inch range....which is still fun any day of the week. Later in the evening, we moved to the backs of coves, and were having about the same type of success that we were having on the main channel. By the way, the bait fish are IN the backs of coves on pomme de terre already. I didn't see much feeding frenzy action on topwater tonight though. I can only assume that the bass will be moving in within the next couple of weeks for sure. Can hardly wait to bust out the big spinners and land me a few lunkers this fall. (By the way, how do i post this topic as a labeled "fishing report"?
  20. Seems like you're always catching an abundance of quality bass.....in EVERY one of your reports. Do you ever have a bad day of fishing? Makes me wonder why you haven't chosen to pursue bass fishing as a career.
  21. I know i've posted this pic before, but ill add to your list of 5lbers out of fellows, Amp! (although I haven't quite figured the fish out on that lake yet to have taken multiple.) taken this summer in one of the cuts straight across from the boat launch on a texas rigged motor oil plastic worm. Fellows ought to host a tourney some time. Fall bass season is coming up and I can hardly wait.
  22. I have clearly stated my indifference to the entire situation, in the previous two posts. I am neither pro, nor anti-dam building on Crane Creek. You guys are obviously anti-dam building, which is fine, and if you were to fight it and win...I would admire and respect all of the hard work and commitment put in to fighting the issue by you guys and who ever else joins the effort. You say that it's more than a fishing hole. Well I say that seems to be the general concern amongst the posters on this thread. Some might say that it's to preserve an ecosystem. Well I say that it would be creating an entirely new, not to mention beautiful, ecosystem for generations of wildlife and mankind to come...minimally harming the current one in place. I was simply stating (in so many words) that you are going to need more of a substantial argument, if you don't want this to happen. With that, I'll bow out of the debate, to prevent any further discontent among the forum. Good luck.....
  23. i don't know much about either of those two examples other than the information you have given me, which is. A. the buffalo river dam would have put nearly half of newton county underwater. - This proposed lake near crane will take up nearly 4 square miles, out of a 619 square mile county. The magnitude for the buffalo river proposal is FAR more significant in land damage and property compensation than the proposed crane lake reservoir. Giving the "little guy" much more of a voice, considering this lake would have covered more than 400 square miles, based on newton county's size. even though we both know that 400 square miles of lake would be absolutely enormous, more than quadrupling the size of table rock....and the lake, in actuality would have probably been no more than 50 square miles. Either way, the difference in 4 and 50 square miles is still VAST, nautically. and especially for the areas affected by it. B. crooked creek mine. The mine was obviously endangering the life of these fish, correct? - When you have a matter of harming wild life....then a whole separate issue comes in to play. I can almost guarantee that if they thought by building this dam, would destroy crane creek's current population of fish...it wouldn't even be an issue. PETA and MDOC would already be in on the fight to stop it. Building a lake isn't going cause an aquatic holocaust, much like the mining on Crooked Creek very well may have caused if it would have been allowed to continue. Leaving far more VAST of an argument in their case, than this. I'm just trying to point out some realities here. Not trying to insult anyone. Sometimes, causing a stink over something as minor as a 4 square mile lake...will just cause deeper and "fishier" issues than what are already at stake.
  24. take what somewhere else? I was simply stating my point of view like all of the rest of you. My pocketbook has nothing to do with it, seeing as I own NO land in or around the Crane Creek area. I suggest you read my post again. Think about it. Then decide if i was being "uncivil". If you seem to think so, I suggest you read a book about debating. I wasn't insulting anyone. I was stating a point of view. What's going to happen when someone brings up an "uncivil" point of view to the table, at one of these town/state meetings to discuss it? Are you going to tell them to "take it somewhere else?" Im just bringing up the fact that your guy's argument, for the most part, has absolutely none of the substance needed in order to actually make a feasible case. There's a reason that they chose to use that creek...and there are people that get paid to decide why Crane Creek is a good creek to dam up and turn into a reservoir. Before we go calling it a piss poor idea, and insulting somebody's quality of work, based upon our initial emotions, why not look at their point of view first? Try and understand why they think it's a good idea. Think OUTSIDE the box. Then, if you still feel strongly against having it built, at least you will have more information and knowledge of the actual process to go off of, when making your case for the opposition. People that go in there, waving and flailing their arms (figuratively), and acting over emotional to the whole situation, have less likely of a chance of being listened to. Especially when all they have to throw on the table is a moral belief.
  25. funny....you don't hear anyone from or around Crane complaining. That's probably because they know they are going to get a fat check from the state of Missouri. I won't participate in any sort of opposition, because i could be focusing my energy on something other than effectively adding my name to the state of missouri's "dung list". I hate to rain on anybody's parade... but do you honestly think that a small group of people in southwest missouri, who are upset because they are going to be losing their favorite fishing hole...is going to sway the state of missouri's decision to build a lake? The answer is no, and it has always been no...Look at history. If the government has ever wanted to build anything, anywhere...chances are, they eventually gained the right to do so. regardless of any kind of protest. I admire the ambition to preserve a TINY section of missouri's waterways...but seriously, let go of the tree and go with the flow. It's not like they're building a nuclear power plant....Jesus.
