  1. Do you have a favorite fly fishing book or DVD, if so what is it and why did you like it? Ideally I am looking for instructional recommendations (technique, tying, etc.) but what the heck, why not see what others enjoyed. Time to start working on the Xmas list which is different than the wish list. - Charlie
  2. Being new to tying probably a lot of mediocore flies, but that's the way to get experience. Plus its a good way to pass the time.
  3. Has any one fished with dorberR's Brunsell Li'l Streamer, if so would you provode some feedback on the rod and how it performs. I'm thinking about purchasing one. - Charlie
  4. I'm headed to the park tomorrow and was looking for an update on conditions and what's working best. Thanks!
  5. I recently went through this exact same dilemma… what brand of waders should I buy as my first pair. I had already decided on stocking foot so the real decision was brand. I found myself in the Chicago suburbs for a week on business, so I spent the evenings visiting stores. My first stop was Orvis, I was impressed with what they had to offer, but could not justify the price. Next stops were Cabella’s and Bass Pro Shops. While these stores did not carry the full line of waders, I was not impressed with what I saw. After doing the mental math I decided that I would be better off buying a quality wader on sale then buy entry level waders and upgrade. I ended up with Orvis Pro-guide 3 waders, and what I like about them is a stocking foot that matches my shoe size with heavy socks, and a wader that fits my body style. If you have the opportunity shop for waders in persons and not in a catalog do so. There is a lot to be said for touching the merchandise.
  6. I do as well, to me it is very important to support local small businesses when possible. Thanks for the recommendation!
  7. We will be heading down on 10/14 - 10/17 and staying at Eagles Park. This will be my first time and thanks to this list I'm excited. Being new to fly fishing I do not have a large collection of flies and I don't have any eggs. Any recommendations on where to purchase are appreciated. - Charlie
  8. As long as you and your friend know how the fish was caught that is all that matters. Some people will never allow themselves to share in someone elses joy, but that is their pain and their burden. Congratulations on a great catch! So waht was working and what are the conditions like? I'm heading down for the first time 10/14 and I'm really looking forward to the trip.
  9. Thanks to all, I will keep these tips in mind. To me this is a great beginner fly to develop tying skills. All the best, Charlie
  10. I'm new to fly tying, and fly fishing as well, and I have a basic question about the mohair leech. When winding the mohair yarn onto the body is it wound in a single layer towrds the eye, or is the body built up? My first two looked a bit a anorexic compared to photo's I've seen. Also, should I build up a head with thread? Thanks in advance. - Charlie
  11. Great advice, thanks to everyone who responded and I'm looking forward to my trip even more. - Charlie
  12. Thanks, the hemorrhaging of $$$ has already begun. When I owned a sailboat I refered to every $100 as a boat buck, now every $100 is a trout buck. Planning to be there the weekend of 10/17 All the best, - Charlie
  13. I'm a newbie to fly fishing with only guided trip under my belt to the Big Thompson River in Estes Park, CO and I have a trip scheduled to Montauk in mid-October. Being new to the sport my collection of flies is almost nonexistant, so I would appreciate any advice on what flies and sizes to purchase and what size leader/tippet to use. Any other advise is appreciated as well. Thanks in advance! - Charlie
