Was fishing near outlet 1 today, and saw tons of dead trout about 1-4 inches long coming out of the outlet. Is this supposed to happen? Why?

It isnt general practice, but it is possible that when they did thier daily mortality count some ended up in the chute.

seems like last winter, I remember a report about some coming out of the same outlet. I think trav is probably right. were they getting gobbled up like a shad kill?

Good thinking Trav...they were probably floaters and the staff just pitched them for food.

Zsmith..

The dead fish coming out of the chute is not a bad thing.. nothing wrong with it...

Also was the water a chocolate before it happened?? (or right after)

This is called a hatchery flush..

They are cleaning out the hatchery.. either getting ready to transport fish for stocking or moving the fish to get the holding run ready for the next batch of fingerling.

This has been going on for years. I used to see it when I fished the outlets back in the day. Brad Wright used to catch some big ones during the flush. Throw white flies the same size as the dead trout and you should hook into something big. Pay attention to weight because you don't want it to sink fast. And you don't want it to float either.

I saw Brad Wright the last time I was on Taney. It was good to see him. He is still having some health problems. He is an institution on Taney.

Sorry i haven't answered back, i haven't been on for a couple days. Anyways, the fish didn't make it to the end of the gravel dropoff before they got swallowed.

Leonard... what do you mean by chocolate?

Zs..

when I said chocolate... The water would have been a brownish color...

with a hatchery flush.. this is useally what happen..

first a lot of bubbles starts to flow out into the water..

a few minutes later the little (a few nice ones) starts taking thing off the top of the water (trout pellets)..

next comes the brown water... alot of the time dead fish are mixed in with the brown water..

a short time after the water clears.. you see a few fish here and there coming out... Im guessing these are the one that got caught on thing (rock, stick, ect) in the outlet and finally broke loose and started it way back down..

Zs.

I sent you a PM.. did you get it??

I saw a lot of bubbles before they came out but didn't see any change in water color. The fish really went crazy when the bubbles came out.

By the way, I got the PM, and just sent my response.
