Terry Beeson Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Kewl looking style for sure. Makes you think of those Chinese acrobats with the ribbons on the stick swirling around... WebFreeman Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Looks like you guys are working on the same "project" as I am today. “Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” — Henry David Thoreau Visit my web site @ webfreeman.com for information on freelance web design.
retroaction man Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 dang that the first time i have heard about spey casting, pretty cool im going to have to give that a wirl
Brian Wise Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 I tell you what guys, since I have been messing with single handed speys I find myself throwing them more and more. I throw a ton of Snap T's when I am nymphing, for me it gives me more control over where the flies are going to land than a good old Flop Cast. Snake rolls are crazy handy when throwing wets, soft hackles, etc. I made myself go on a couple of fishing trips without throwing any back casts and now they are super comfortable. AND you can practice these on grass since there is enough tension to hold your anchor point. They are fun to boot! Brian My Youtube Channel
catman Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 It works real well once you get the hang of it..It does take a little practice for sure. I was born at night, but not last night. Odds are with the prepared...
Danoinark Posted March 8, 2008 Author Posted March 8, 2008 I want to learn this. Sowbug might be the place. Brian is it conventional equipment and line or do you need extremely long rods and spey lines to accomplish this cast? Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Brian Wise Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 You can use the same equipment that you take fishing everyday Dano. A faster rod can make it a little easier along with a strong WF line, but you can do these casts with a 3 wt if you want. Once you get the hang of it you can pound out some crazy long casts...even with a 9' 5wt. Set your anchor and just flick the peanut butter off the spoon. Brian My Youtube Channel

I know your time is limited this year at Sowbug, but one of these days I might get you to show me. I am not very good with visuals on a videotape. I think I am one dimension or something.... Trav Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 I was watching Roland Martin do a cast he called the "sling shot". Used to direct cast through cypruss trees or between closely moored docks. Can hit a 2 inch target at 30 mile per hour. It looked like it would be hard on your rod but he could fling a lizard 25 yards between trees that are only 8 inches apart, just like a crossbow.
