Members yellow dog Posted March 11, 2008 Members Posted March 11, 2008 I'm planning a trip for this weekend, and was hoping to float from Woolum down to Baker's Ford or Tyler Bend. It is looking like the river is going to be somewhere around 8 feet (Hwy 65 gauge) this weekend. Will 8 feet be too high for a casual float and fish on this section? I've heard the maximum level for this section is 8.5 to 9 feet, but I don't really want to be pushing the limit. Would I be better off to go further up where the snow melt has already ran out? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
bobber Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 thats a great level ! .... for that section. nothing too spooky, but it is a class II AT THIS LEVEL>>> AND YOU DO NEED GOOD BOAT SKILLS, that run is full of deep holes i'm going to be with a large group from the arkansas canoe club down river and we are camping friday night at spring creek and then floating to rush spending one night on a gravel bar some place around tony's bluff. feel free to tag along with us if you want to! <*)))))))>< * AMERICAN CANOE ASSOCIATION CERTIFIED CANOE, and SWIFT WATER RESCUE INSTRUCTOR.*

That is reassuring to here that 8 feet is a good level. . . So, barring any catastrophic change of plans, I will report back with a fishing report on Monday! Thanks again, for the info.
taxidermist Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 At Carver is harldy up a foot over where it was at low water three weeks ago. It shoul dbe an easy float with less paddling with a couple feet of water. River went down really quick this time. the srings and creeks around carver are back to normal.
Members mark hedger Posted March 13, 2008 Members Posted March 13, 2008 My son and I floated Pruitt to Hasty yesterday and Ponca to Kyle's Landing today. Water is still up for fishing but perfect for floating.
taxidermist Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 We had a lot of heavy rain last night early this AM, the river is way up this AM and muddy. Big Creek is out of its banks. The heavy rains, already saturated ground and more rain for Saturday, I would stay off the river this weekend. The upper end from Boxley to Ponca to Steel Creek may be fine.

Members yellow dog Posted March 17, 2008 Author Members Posted March 17, 2008 Well, I chickened out and went upriver. We floated from Ponca to Kyle's and camped overnight on the river in between. The river up there was as close as you can get to a lazy float for that section. The fishing was slow, even for this section of the river, but we did manage a few.
