while fishing the other night using a leech I had several occasions where my line was so twisted from the spinning of my leech in the water that it started to twist up on the line creating several knots anyone have any suggestions

The solution - use heavier tippet.

This can happen while dry fly fising.. sometimes you switch from one really medium sized pattern like a Parachute Adams say in size 14.. then go to a size 8 Renegade. Your tippet will be compromised... stretching itself with each fasle cast caused by the wind resistance and additional weight of the fly.

So switching to heavier tippet will fix all your problems.

By the way - night fishing I use 3X (8lb) or heavier.

brian thanks alot that makes perfect sense I was using a 5lb tippet I will try going up to 8lb I appreciate the advise

If you are nymph or streamer fishing you can also tie in a #12 Crane Swivel about 2-3 feet above the fly. The crane swivel will add more weight getting the fly down quicker.

I am not familiar with that type of swivel where would I pick that up at and can I use it night fishing with woolies and leeches from leader to tippet?

When I tie my leechs I will tie them with a 1\8" bead then tie them with #10 lead wraped 8 times then slide the lead under the bead. That is plenty of weight, The crane swivel is a great idea but if you are not familar with casting them it can be very frustrating to you beacuse it will cause a little bit of a hinge action. With heavier fly you can fish 3X-0X which is great. If you want to try the swivel I do have them in my shop.
