I was at the farm this past weekend and noticed a pile of hay string just begging to become fly tying material. I had seen a pattern I wanted to try and this looked like it would make a good material for it. Well, this is what I came up with... It's a prototype because I didn't have all the materials I needed - such as moose mane for the tail fibers - with me... Plus, I need some help on how to tie the segments more properly on the tail.

Anyway, here it is... comments? suggestions?

Looks like it might bite. Heck of a stinger. I like it. How big is it?

Hey, I like that...

Could use a little more information... what's it supposed to be?

Mayfly or Damsel nymph? Mayfly adult (dry)? General attractor (wet or dry)?

The segments on the tail look fine to me. Is there some concern with them... too loose maybe?

That hay twine looks great. It's got a good translucense to it. It'd work well in caddis larva and pupa patterns. I bet it would look great in an inch worm pattern too. (It looks green in your picture. Is that the actual color?)

Heck if I was a big old gill or bass, I would eat it. Mimics a damselfly if I ever saw one. Reminds me of the ones that used to land on the end of my cane pole as I sat under the shade of a nice big oak at the ice plant ditch....Dano

Cool fly! I think you should name it the "TB Special"

Not too shabby, you might try a thicker thread for the segmenting, or somehow making the tail thicker and then segmenting it even tighter... of course i've never tried any extended body patterns so I don't know if you tied the tail in first and then you used a separate piece for the body. If it is one piece, you might be able to use a longer piece and then double it over, tying it in over where you first did, segment it and then cut the part where it got folded at the end so it will flare out.

Not sure if that works or even makes sense, but thats just how I pictured doing it.

Web - it's tied on a size 12 dry fly hook...

mAngler - It's more of a mayfly dry than anything, but could be tied to mimmick several flies.

OR as Dano said, a Damselfly...

Mike - I'm thinking more of the TB-POS...

zsmith - I'll take those thoughts and work on them. I agree on the thicker thread. It was all I had with me...

TB POS .... now that's funny. Looks pretty fishy and has a serious damsel fly resemblance! They'll be tieing them in bulk in Kenya in no time.

Cheers. PC
