Members tdheater Posted April 1, 2008 Members Posted April 1, 2008 Howdy, I'm a newby looking for a little insight on when to head to the river for sandbass and stripers. I gleaned a lot of info from ready the previous posts but I am still a little fuzzy on the details. It looks like John Zink dam and pso are the best locals but when is the better time to go. I'm a novice fly fisherman so whereever I fish, I need some open area to keep from snaggin myself. I saw on the usgs website the guage height is back down, would this weekend be good? Any fine details would be appreciated.
zander Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 I used to go this time of year to Ponca and fish behind Kaw Lake Dam. I used to catch a lot of white bass on little tube jigs. Be careful after dark though, the rats come out in force!
Hopper Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 went this evening from 5:30 till 7:45, nothing untill 7:00 then they started hitting, caught three stripers largest 16lbs. (forgot camera this time) using 8wt fly rod and chartruse and white clouser minnow, slow strip about 12" at a time. Waded east bank accross from PSO. The gods do not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent in fishing.
Members Cunningham Posted April 2, 2008 Members Posted April 2, 2008 td, if you are learning to fly fish and want to fish the Arkansas, go on a Sunday when the water is shut down....which will prob not be anytime soon. The flow is too high in the river right now. Read some of the older posts from years past, and they will help you out.
