vanven Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Busier at work today..... I am fishing Rio Gold right now on my 5wt. It is a huge upgrade with the free Orvis line that came with my reel. I cant imagine going away from Rio anytime soon. -Jerod
Members wgm Posted April 25, 2008 Author Members Posted April 25, 2008 Though I post back... where I finally landed after lots of great advise & getting to try a lot of rods & a lot of research. I ended up casting at the AFF FF 101 basic clinic, a Sage SLT 9' 5wt 4 peice & feel in love with it... didn't really need this much of a reel or rod for that matter... but ended up getting going for it... paired with an Orvis Battenkill II Large Arbor reel loaded with SA GPX wf-5-f & backing. I think I got a real good deal on this package... all new with lifetime warranty $435 for everything. Thanks again for everyone that posted back & help me in the learning curve, now I can't wait to start fishing with my new setup !
Danoinark Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 That's a fine combination, good price, and one that will serve you for many years.... Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Terry Beeson Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Yep... I think you'll be very happy with that setup for sure. Good luck with your fishing. Now... the next step... fly tying.... It's a very smooth casting and versatile rod. I read a review a year ago stating it is one of the finest all around trout rods ever made. drew03cmc Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 I just saw this thread, and as such, need to weigh in. I prefer a 4wt. Why you may ask? I fish smaller flies, I do not need to reach across the lake to cast, and the lighter rod protects the 6# tippet I use in warm water better. For cold water, I find myself using 6x fluoro leaders with 7x tippet and dries most often, and have NO problem laying out 50' casts to rising fish. It might just be me here, but I prefer the 4wt. You got a hell of a nice combo there that will do well for you for YEARS to come! Nice buy! Andy
