ozarkgunner Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 My brother lives in Dallas and I have been wanting to drive down and visit with him. Has anyone ever fished Lake Fork? I've been reading some websites that mention the HUGE bass that live there. Is there any truth to the rummors? Will my usual Ozark bass fishing tactics work down there? I figured since it's further south the spawn might be a month eariler. 6 hours is not that bad of a drive for an 8lb. bass! Angler At Law
Kansas Fly Fisher Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Ozark, My boss fishes Lake Fork quite often, at least every chance he gets. I'm back on work on Wednesday and I'll get him on here to answer some of your questions. I know he really likes it and talks about the big bass all the time. Members DavidF. Posted April 28, 2008 Members Posted April 28, 2008 I have fished at Lake Fork 3 times. It's an awesome BIG bass lake. Lots of creeks, points and TIMBER. Definitely should be on every bass chasers list of places to fish. The last time I went there were quite a few flyfisher persons in float tubes fishing the edges of timber lines along the creek channels. The water was 40 feet deep and the bass were suspended in that timber and hitting deerhair bassbugs. I didn't catch a trophy but had my 7' heavy action worm rod bent double more than once only to have my 20lb Big Game line snapped several times. If I go this year I'll be taking my 8wt and some heavy leaders. Edited for typo. DavidF.
Trav Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 I fished Fork a year ago. It is a must destination if your an avid Bass Man. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Danimal Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 A buddy of mine went down there several years ago and caught a 7 pounder casting out from the bank while the boat was being backed down the ramp. Dan-o RELEASE THOSE BROWNIES!!
Kansas Fly Fisher Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 This is what Joey (my boss) has to say about the Lake: the same way you fish here for bass and the presentation of bait is no different. Yes it is true they have the florida strain bass, so your chances of catching a double digit fish is possible. Several years ago they had a big fish kill that made fishing verry difficult.. The spawn usually occurs around this time of year now would be a good time to head. I always had luck with 1/4 ounce red rattle traps and black and blue lizards. 2 years ago we fished for five days straight 10hrs a day and betwen two of us we cought only six fish. If a tough lake but the potenial is there. the two best coves are little and big mustang. Good luck. Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM
Members swellcat Posted May 6, 2008 Members Posted May 6, 2008 Reports on two forums had it tough there last week with even a guide getting skunked. Of course, every day is a new one. Take your lightest rod to try and play with the yellow bass in order to give yourself options.

It's a hard sell to drive all the way down there right now with fishing on the ROCK blowing up right now. Might just have my brother come up here and I'll save enough money in gas to add another G.LOOMIS to my rod collection. Angler At Law
Members tkite Posted May 7, 2008 Members Posted May 7, 2008 Me and 2 buddies went there the first week of April. They had a big cold front the day before we got there and the first two days we fished we caught 2 bass both under a pound and a 7lb catfish on a spiinnerbait. The third morning we pulled into a small cove at daylight and in 1 hour caught an 8 , a 7 , a 6 , two 5lbers and three over 3. And then the wind kicked up to 35mph it started pouring and we were done. Very dangerous lake . I was running the buoy line out of mustang creek that shows where they cleared a path in the trees out to the main lake . I missed one of the buoys by about 5ft and had a tree on the other side of the boat about 10 feet awaybroke off right at the water line. WE will definatley go back next year. Just plan on fishing there cause there is nothing else to do around the lake.
