bclift65706 Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 I took my kids fishing today in an old pond that turned over about 15 years ago at my grandads farm. It is way back off the beaten path and I dont think anyone has fished in it since it turned over. We just decided to go and it is full 1/2 lb bass. the water was clear and I spotted a big fish it took 30 miniuts to get a hook in it and it was a 9 pounder and is headed to stoutland tomarow and will look great on my wall the biggest bass I have ever cought. I almost always C&R bass but I could not talk myself into throwing it back today. I seen in the neighberhood of 200 bass in this pond and going to have to eat alot of them to get this pond back on track it is way over populated.

I ain't much for eatin' bass, but I'd sure be happy to come out and help you catch 'em... don't suppose that would be possible? I'd be happy to provide the sides for a fish fry... cricket.c21.com
Trav Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 My Dad has a few ponds and one is full of 5 to 8 inch bass as well. They wont grow any bigger than that either. There isnt any forage, just bass so I assume they eat thier fry and each other and have stunted. Its mainly used as a water hole for his horses so he really dont pay it no mind. I have mentioned that if he put in some gills as well as a few Channel cats to eat some of the bass he might get some more size out of them. All three ponds are no bigger than a couple acres and maybe 12 feet deep in the middle. Knowing my Pops he probably wont do anything. He is a die-hard walleye and musky man and absolutley can care less about bass. bc....If it makes you feel better, I probably would have mounted a 9 pounder out of a pond as well. bclift65706 Posted May 17, 2008 Author Posted May 17, 2008 I am looking for another pond with nothing in it found a couple I am always riding around with a stock tank full of fish I secretly stock alot of ponds around webster county. A friend of mine is the same way he has a pond that the water stays cool and once in a while we get in late dont feel like cleaning fish and turn them lose in his pond so far you can catch walleye white bass and goggeleye along with crappie bass bluegill and 2 flathead catfish and alot of the fish has been in the pond for 4 to5 years . All because of a stock tank to haul minnows to the lake and haul fish home.
bclift65706 Posted May 17, 2008 Author Posted May 17, 2008 to get a good healthey fish population you need to take out alot of the small bass a small pond olny needs 30 or so and several large blue gill and about 30 crappie after the crappie get a good spawn dont hesitate to eat some of them they will take a pond over and add 50 channel cat in the mix. It sounds bad but if you are over run with small bass and noware to go with them cath about 20 of them keep them alive and throw the rest out on the bank and do that untill you dont catch to many their isint to many fish that can eat a 8 to 10 in bass. getting a natural balence between all fish is the key to making a good pond or any fishery.I took 2 3lb bass and 20 about 1/2 lb to a pond full of 2in blue gills 2years ago I am going to check on soon I bet them bass are getting big and fat the three pounders may be in the 6 to 7 pound range by now I dont know how fast a largemouth will grow.
