Members Jim-to-fish Posted May 9, 2008 Members Posted May 9, 2008 Was fishing few weeks back in KC area with a kind gentleman. Cloudy day. I was throwing SB and he a Redfin. In a 20-30 min. span I believe he caught 3 keepers with lots of shorts. I said lets get out of here as was day before tourn. Like I said it was cloudy that day and the cove we were in you could see quite a few balls of shad in open water like in the fall. You would go over balls of shad and see arches of fish suddenly start moving upward thru the bait. Rain and cold front came in with bluebird skies and when we went back into cove you could see balls of shad, but arches of fish just wouldn't move through balls. They were not feeding so bite was off. Tournament ended up being disappointment for us as we tried other things and didn't catch like we had envisioned. We did turn in a nice keeper that I caught, but besides a 15.5 inch crappie I caught on SB and released as was full of eggs that was it. Was wondering if anyone else has caught anything on topwater? I like throwing Black Buzzbait, but was wondering if anybody threw any with sun out. Also if anybody threw Redfins and what favorite color was. Thanks guys and great board as I see this is site from Lilly's Landing that wife and I stayed at last December and had a lot of fun trout fishing, then Christmas shopping at strip malls. Jim
Fishing Buddy Don House Posted May 9, 2008 Fishing Buddy Posted May 9, 2008 Jim, we are just now starting to get that bite, was out today and had some success on it. I use a new bait made by JackAll Baits called a Mikey Jr, a small version of the red fin but better colors. These were Tennessee Shad color, and the fish really went after them. I also spoke with Eric Prey another great guide on Table Rock and he had a good spook bite was well. So it is turning on, you get back down here for Christmas shopping duty try some of table rock winter bass fishing!... Good Fishing Capt. Don Capt. Members Jim-to-fish Posted May 9, 2008 Author Members Posted May 9, 2008 Don, can't wait for Christmas. I'm coming down next Wed. for tournament on Sat. We have a work tournament for that famous brewery in St. Louis. Bass & Bluegill. I'll be fishing the bass side. Not more than 15 boats. When my partner was catching those bass on the Redfins it was like you said the explosion on the surface. I'm just hoping for some cloudy days. Hopefully Saturday. I am getting into that topwater myself as I see it is such a great time at fishing when conditions are right. I had a spook tied on one time and was trolling around and had battery trouble and left spook alone while I was checking it out, all of a sudden heard this big splash and saw my rod going toward the rail in boat. About broke my neck getting to that rod and reel. Caught a nice 5# plus bass though. I plan on taking my own boat down in December as I tried to get boat at State Park Marina and was closed in winter. Had all that Bass equipment and couldn't use it. I see if you go out though you better have gas as almost everything is shut down on lake. Wife and I come down in spring also. We are going to take some time and hook up with one of you guys down there and get the scoop so she can have some fun fishing also. I haven't been a good guide for her so anything will help. Jim
