Greg Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 No posts regarding Montauk recently. I'm wondering how the stream is fishing and how the water level/flow is? My family and I are heading down the first week in June for a few days. I hope the river is not up too much. hfdhoosier Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Was dowm there the last weekend in April. River was great, still green murky in deep holes but clear in shallower water, The gauge read 1.70 when we left. It is 1.63 now so looks like in real good shape still. I will be down the first week in June also. Will have on an OAF hat in orange or black. Say Hi if you see me. The fishing was a little slow in April but caught plenty. The orangish red san juan worm they sell at the lodge was the ticket. Dennis Eat, Fish, Sleep,....Repeat Member: ozarkflyfishers http://www.ozarkflyfishers.org/
ekl-stl Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 I went down this weekend and fished Friday, Saturday and Sunday.. My how things have changed since late in March.. many new holes, many holes scoured out.. but the stream looks really, really good.. Fishing was red hot.. Lots of fish in the upper fly water.. never fished below the long strech below the gauge hole.. Red San Juans, Chamois Worms, Chartruese Glo-Balls.. Pine Cones.. Black leaches... you get the idea.. try whatever you want.. everything was working.
Members Tailwater Posted May 12, 2008 Members Posted May 12, 2008 Gotta agree with ekl on this one. I fished all day on 5/8, and caught lots of fat, hungry trout on leeches and a black madame X. The fly zone looks MUCH different than last year, with lots of nice holes and undercuts to fish. They were hitting almost everything, and the overcast skies and 60 degree temp helped quite a bit. Biggest of the day was about 17", and the majority were in the 14" to 15" range. Most were nicely colored and gave the drag on my 4wt quite a nice run. I released all of mine, and was even polite to the guy in full camo who was thoughtful enough to stand directly above a hole I was fishing and give me some unrequested "advice."
flyfishmaster Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 tailwater, Were you giving your camo friend the verbal iteration of the universal "one finger salute"? later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
ekl-stl Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 The weather was a little unpleasant on Saturday evening with the hail and hard rain but it seemed to "excite" the fish.. it was hot and heavy for the last hour and a half but dang that rain was cold... I had some fun on Saturday with the 2wt.. some 15" plus fish gave a great fight.. It was "fun" to get "Montauked" a few times by other fishermen who thought moving to withing 5 feet of me while I caught fish would increase their odds of catching as well.... it didnt work.. I even had one ol' boy ask me what I was using.. twice.. Seems he had never heard of a red san juan worm..
Members anieman Posted May 12, 2008 Members Posted May 12, 2008 I was at montauk 2 weeks ago during the kids fishing day. I fished the fly only area and the fishing was great. The only flies I used were pheasant tails and zebra midges. In my opinion the higher water has really improved the stream and it's fun to fish the new holes. The fishing outside the park was also great around Tan Vat and Baptist Camp. Austin
Greg Posted May 13, 2008 Author Posted May 13, 2008 Hey thanks for all the posts. Sounds like the fishing is great. I can't wait to get there. On Sun I went to Taney - wish I had driven to Montauk even though it is a lot further for me. Taney is just very difficult to wade and fish right now with the high water. Dennis I'll definitely say hi if I see you. I generally wear a black OAF hat so please do the same (if you see me). thanks again, Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
Members BrowningFisherman Posted May 15, 2008 Members Posted May 15, 2008 Fished Montauk today, it was all in all pretty good, I couldn't figure out quite what they were after. I caught them on BH Prince Nymphs and BH Pheasant Tails and BH Grey Scud. Oh yeah and of course the good ole chamois fly. The water is different than it was last year I wasn't finding fish in the same holes that I tore up in last year. I honestly think I would have done even better with a nice pair of polarized glasses
