timsfly Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Roaring river is in great shape right now, the water is clearing everyday, you can see maybe 4' in some holes now and the volume of water is slowing and making the fishing eaiser, especially if you are fly fishing. Good flies this week were the caddis, adams, griffiths gnats, lt. cahills and we are still catching a few on beetles. Nymphs that worked well this week, were the copper johns, pheasant tail nymphs, micro eggs, zebra midges, burlaps and sowbugs were all good. Woolybuggers in olive, black, and brown also were effective this past week. With the water clearing 6X tippet is working better than 5X tippet, but I'm still using 5X on my big woolybuggers and 6X on the nymphs, and I'm using 7X when throwing dry flies. Marabou jigs in olive, black/yellow, olive, tan and white all worked well this past week, the water is getting clearer and the micro jigs are starting to work better. Thread jigs and glo-balls were to use this week also, best color of thread jig is still the white, glo-balls in orange, chartruse and orange seemed to be the best. If you are using powereggs, and powerworms, then the water is perfect for that type of fishing right now, the best colors in the power worms this week were the cheese, white, and the orange peel, if you were using eggs, then hatch brown, white and the orange were the best colors. Roostertail spinners, spoons, and small crankbaits continue to work well, if you are using spoons let them sink deep and work them back very slowly, same thing with the spinners, and on the little crankbaits, sometimes a extra sinker a foot or so above the crankbait will help get it down where the bigger fish are waiting. In zone 3 minnows, powerbait paste(white) and corn have all been effective. Good luck on the river this week. timsfly Posted May 12, 2008 Author Posted May 12, 2008 As long as the rains don't hammer this area, the water should be fine for your trip, the river looks better everyday. Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
Fly_Guy Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Wife and I fished RR in the afternoon for about 5 hours yesterday. Each caught 14. When we were using white power eggs, I would unhook wife's fish, and she would grab my pole and catch another one before I was even done. Fishing was that fast, for a period. (Berkley Gulp brand - the eggs tend to be more fragile, but more effective) Most of the time however, wife relaxed and read a book and I tried luck on fly rod. Slow day - I fish mostly dries. Caught one and lost about 7 on a barbless size 24 black ant, caught three more on a brownish crackleback, and had one on a brassie. Some guys at the top hole said they were having excellent luck on the crackleback. Looking foreward to lower, slower water and a good week of nice weather to hopefully get a good hatch. Then, lookout trout!
timsfly Posted May 13, 2008 Author Posted May 13, 2008 sounds like you guys had a good trip. I only caught 3 this morning and all of them on a green woolybugger. I can't wait for the water to go down so I can fish drys and sight fish more. Fly_Guy Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Same here - I would fish dries all year at RR and Taneycomo if it were possible.
