retroaction man Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 As topic says three of us went fishing sunday morning. We arrived about 6:50 and headed down to the water. We fised off the rock pretty much right below the darn. We are not fly fishers so we were useing power bait early in the morn as well as corn (barbless hooks of course. Greg caught a fish on the first cast and Mike was doing very well also. I however didnt catch anything untill about 2 hours. Then my luck changed. I caught two with a gulp product i was useing. about 9:30 it seemed like feeding habits changed so i switched to a rooster tail (single barbless hook that i rigged) caught a few more untill about 11:00. Greg caught a 16inch brown that was very nice and of course we let it as well as all the browns we caught go back in the water. Needless to say it was a great morning. We caught around 25 fish total out of the three of us. Hope you all have the same luck soon. Here is a pic of what i brought home. I really wish i would have taken my camera, but i forgot it. Its hard to remeber everything that early in the morn. pic is in the link http://www.panicstream.com/files/100_0323.jpg cheers
retroaction man Posted March 1, 2006 Author Posted March 1, 2006 people... come on... feel free to post. (((crickets)))
Guest flyfishBDS Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Hey retro, nice to see you had a good time. You have to say Gday next time. Why don';t you post up a piece on rugging rooster tails with single barbless hooks, size etc etc, and for other lures too. Sure there are plenty of people interested in that for beaver cheers steve
ecce38 Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 This is a pic of a Rapala countdown per 2006 regulation modifications- Removed the upper treble hook and then clipped 2 of the 3 remaining hooks on the tail treble and smashed the barb. Not an easy thing to do after paying upwards of $5 for such a lure....but hey, it still catches fish! Brian K. Shaffer Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Patrick - why not just replace the treble ? I have plenty of good barbless hooks just waiting to end up on the business end of a Rapala. Try this one for instance : That hook is the 3761 SPBL. Super point - barbless. Replaceable many time over. Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
ecce38 Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 I guess I'm too lazy! I just use my ultra light for trout and since I release them anyway, why not just permanently alter the hook? But that's just me. But replacing the hook would clearly be the way to go if you plan to use a particular lure elsewhere. Thanks for the hook recommendation. I will pick up some for just that purpose. You can't use bait up there at all! I may have misunderstood your location.
ecce38 Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Packman I'm not so sure that's correct. The only "no-bait" section is the former "catch-n-release" zone (between the lower end of camping area C and extending a few hundred feet passed Crane Roost Bluff). Is fallcreek in this area? If so, then using bait is illegal. Sounds like they were fishing up by the boat ramp just below the Dam. Bait fishing is allowed there.
