bigredbirdfan Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 I will attempt to keep a fly rod in my tracker boat when fishing from B town down to Powersite. I would like to take it out and fly fish if the conditions are right and my wife is not in the boat for me to hook. Can someone please help me with some basics for this application? I will go get new fly line, leader and tippet at either Backcountry or Pro Bass. Obviously I am not that serious of a fly fisherman so I don't want to invest much money. Not even sure what weigth rod I have. Will try to look at home tonight. I guess I need to know what flies to keep in my box. I have never really gotten into fly fishing b/c I don't really have the time to devote to it. I think this might be a good way to ease into it. Who knows I might even be tempted to prefer it my spinning outfit.
Trav Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 Phil was using a red humpy on this day. He was targeting gills though. http://ozarkanglers.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12260 "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson

Trav Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 Haha It looked like a little fuzzy thing. I dont fly fish. Just repeating what Phil said in the report. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
WebFreeman Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 If you're going to Backcountry, Michael can tell you. I would think a midge would work down lake if you see fish surfacing, esp. in large numbers, there probably a hatch. W/ this high water, there haven't been many f-fishing reports. “Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” — Henry David Thoreau Visit my web site @ webfreeman.com for information on freelance web design.
Leonard Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 I will go get new fly line, leader and tippet at either Backcountry or Pro Bass. bigred.. If I were you I would go over there to BCO.. Micheal can help you out.. bass pro just isnt the place for information for that.. shoot you could probably say you were going to Taneycomo to fish for bass... and they would laugh at you and say there is no bass in Taneycomo... as for as flies.. he has them there too.... http://www.taneycomonights.com
rainbow Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 We fly fish a lot from the boat, Tracker, and mostly use micro jigs under a small float at 5 or 6 ft when down lake. We get all our flies at Lilley's and they always have the right colors. Have put a midge or scud dropper on the jig and done well too.
Forsythian Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 I occasionally put the boat in at Empire Park in the evening, and fly cast to the risers at dusk. I generally will strip olive or black leach or maribou patterns (small), or maybe a crackleback. I get alot of short strikes, and the window of opportunity is generally pretty small (last hour or so of light) to make it worthwhile, but it's something to do I reckon. Cenosillicaphobiac
Project Healing Waters Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Depends on what you want to accomplish. You can spend some $$$ and get set up to fish flies down to as deep as 20' or so...sinking lines, 6-7wt rods, etc. Fly fishing that deep is a much slower process than your typical spin fishing version or fly fishing shallow. It's a patient man's game. But you can hook some serious fish that way. I have to agree with the micro-jigs 6' under a small float as a general rule for lower Taney. This produces well in mid-depth and shallower water such aas coves, near docks, etc. Try hot pink and white thread jigs in 1/100th oz and peach, rainbow, and red glo-ball micro-jigs in 1/100th oz. You can add a red or pink or tan San Juan Worm dropper to that if you like. If water clarity is really good, tie on a size 16 soft hackle as a dropper instead of the worm...or a size 16 blood midge. Slack line drift with a floating fly line will produce if you find the fish. http://www.projecthealingwaters.org
motroutbum Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 You should get a book on fishing lakes for trout. It will be better than any information that Michael or bass pro could give you. In trying out for the US fly fishing team, we have to fish lakes, and now we are fishing in strictly lake competitions because the next world championships are in Scotland and there will be 4 lakes fished and one river. It is a tough game to try to find the fish. The easiest way to try to find fish is to troll around with a wooly bugger. If you are just starting out, lake fishing is rather complicated. When I fish lakes, I have no less than 15 different lines to cover every situation. There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!
