bigredbirdfan Posted July 3, 2008 Author Posted July 3, 2008 twosets: Probably so. I have never fished a micro jig on a spinning rod so the transition should be seemless . Any info on that technique would be appreciated. I have a few micro jigs in my tackle box, mostly dark green in color.
Micheal Kyle Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Listen to what Trav says about the lower lake he knows his stuff. If someone would come in and say that they were new to fly fishing and wanted to Trout fish and had a budget they needed to stick to, which we all have one. I would recommend a floating line, then I would show you some high water indicators, then set you up with Turner Jones Micro Jigs they are awesome. I sale them and so does Phil and I am pretty sure that Tim down at Roaring River, he owns Tim's Fly Shop sales them too. I have my best luck with olive with a gold head and then the white with a pink head. You do not need any thing fancy and you sure do not need to complicate things with a lot of gear. Remember the old rule J.K.I.S. (just keep it simple). Now for the Bluegills, I just don't that it gets any better than using a light action rod like a 2 or 3 weight. I like using small nymphs or small dry flies. I like Scuds, Prince Nymphs, for dry flies my number one go to fly is an Elk Hair Caddis size 14 or 16. Good Luck Michael To Know People Is To Know Thier Ways!
bigredbirdfan Posted July 3, 2008 Author Posted July 3, 2008 Thanks Michael. I will come in for the fly line and bring my existing equipment.

Micheal Kyle Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I would Love to have the opportunity to help you out. Have a good day Michael To Know People Is To Know Thier Ways!
Members troutloop Posted July 4, 2008 Members Posted July 4, 2008 You should get a book on fishing lakes for trout. It will be better than any information that Michael or bass pro could give you. In trying out for the US fly fishing team, we have to fish lakes, and now we are fishing in strictly lake competitions because the next world championships are in Scotland and there will be 4 lakes fished and one river. It is a tough game to try to find the fish. The easiest way to try to find fish is to troll around with a wooly bugger. If you are just starting out, lake fishing is rather complicated. When I fish lakes, I have no less than 15 different lines to cover every situation. There are a lot of the people within this industry that do not like one another but the start ones do not put the other people down. This is a small industry (whether we think that it is or not) and we need to support one another. I can understand put down bass pro but another shop, come on. I know alot of the guys on team USA and they if they knew that you were bashing another industry pro's and then representing yourself as a future member of the team they would give you the beating you deserve. If putting others down to make yourself feel better is what you have to do I feel bad for you. I am sure that you are a great angler, but it sounds like you have a confidence issue. You can be a good angler who is humble and represents himself with confidence and you will be recieved better then a great angler who no one wants to be around becuase he is cocky. You can get alot of good information from alot of places. Although it is in your best intrest to go to some one like Michael (for example) becuase they will be looking out for your best intrest. The simple fact is that poeple like Michael want you to catch fish. Proper Catch and Release is what it is all about!
WebFreeman Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 He works in Michael's shop, so I don't think he was exactly bashing him, just saying you can get a lot more from a book than a conversation. “Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” — Henry David Thoreau Visit my web site @ webfreeman.com for information on freelance web design.

Correction: he WORKED in Michael's shop briefly. But I think enough has been said on this subject. http://www.projecthealingwaters.org
bigredbirdfan Posted July 8, 2008 Author Posted July 8, 2008 The rod says the following 8'5' 5-6 line. Does this help identify kind of line and related leader I need?
Micheal Kyle Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 That means it is 8'6" and the line class is split so I would opt for the heavier line out of the two it calls for 5wt or 6 wt. I would put a 6 wt on it. It will load the rod a lot better and be easier for you to cast. Most of the rods that are out there that have a split line on them are made to cast the heavier of the two. As far as the Leader goes It really does not matter because the rod will handle just about any thing as to leader, for the lower lake area I would stick to 4-6 x leader systems. in This high water I'm sure you can even get away with using heavier leader and tippet. You will just have to cast the rod and see how it will handle the lighter tippet on theer. If you are breaking the light tippet go heavier. You will see real fast how it will handle 6x and 7x tippet if need be but right now in the high water the heavier tippet will work just fine. Michael To Know People Is To Know Thier Ways!
