Members Dumb to fishing Posted June 26, 2008 Members Posted June 26, 2008 I am new to trout fishing and i went twice with a friend and i am HOOKED! I am starting by spin fishing (not brave enough for fly fishing plus water levels will not allow). Any suggestions or help in getting started or tips/tricks? Thanks
twosets Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 Under the Tanycomo heading there are archives onf articles written by Plil Lilly and Bill Babler, among others. Reading them is a good place to start. There are tons of great guys on this forum who are more than happy to share. "This is not Nam. This is bowling. There are rules."
Members Dumb to fishing Posted June 27, 2008 Author Members Posted June 27, 2008 I am actually from the bsl dam area. Will probably be fishing from the dam to ranchette. Thanks
twosets Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 The same types of things should work, and since those guys are fishing Tany more often, that is where most of the discussion of lures and methods end up. "This is not Nam. This is bowling. There are rules."
twosets Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 Also go back and read the stuff that John Berry has written, it is more specific to the White. "This is not Nam. This is bowling. There are rules."

WebFreeman Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 go to ozarkanglers.com (the mother site) and poke around the Taneycomo and the white river sections. We have all articles (10 yrs +) archived there. Many may say Taney, but they're just general trout fishing articles you could apply to just about any river, esp. the jig fishing articles. “Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” — Henry David Thoreau Visit my web site @ webfreeman.com for information on freelance web design.
rps Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 Dear DTF: Medium light spinning gear. 4# Maxima or fluoro line (I use Yozuri fluoro/mono blend) Suspending Rogues, Rapalas, cleo spoons, size 1 in line spinners. For bait instruction hire Cliff Chisum. For bait or lure instruction hire David Capps. I've fished with both and been happy every time. State Park to Ranchette is a big stretch of water to learn in a short time. Pick a section: State Park to White Hole, White Hole to Wildcat, Wildcat to Cotter, Cotter to Ranchette and learn it first. Add the others after you are accustomed to the river. BTW, the sections I named are all good for a one day intensive fish. And all have huge fish in them. Good luck and have fun.
taxidermist Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 I fish the river a lot. Spin fishing, what do you want to know? I don't know a much but manage to catch some fish. Bows and browns. We use 8# Vanish line, its just that it Vanishes in the water. If you are going to bait fish, use a #4 Eagle Claw Crappie hook, it has a bend in it and the hook turns when you set the hook and 98% of the time you will hook the fish in the lower jaw. Put four or five Power Eggs on, it stops the gut hooking. Also Carolina rig it with a swivel and a 1/16 ox bullet weight. We use a short leader about 16 inches max. In-line spinners work great in colors fluorescent orange, neon green and white, I like the ones with brass blades Rapalas in CD-3 , CD-5 work well in Gold and Black, Blue and silver. Even huge Rouges. Big fish hit big lures. Lots of water to cover, look for rocks, I like big rocks for big fish. you don't carch as many but you better fish.
Lshack2 Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 When the water returns to normal flow jig fishing is one of the most productive methods of consistently catching trout. With normal 2-4 units a 1/16 jig in white, black or olive is hard to beat day in and day out. Use light line 4-6# and a light action rod. It is a blast.
