Members Simsmarine Posted March 4, 2006 Members Posted March 4, 2006 Sometimes I amaze myself at how hard I am to please. I can NOT find a flybox anywhere, at any price, that I truly "like". They are either too long, too short, too wide, and mostly too thick. I like the slit foam concept as far as holding/organizing the flys, but even with the vast array those offered by CF, SA, ect... I still cant be happy with them. Ideally I'd like to find a lightweight box 5 3/4" X 3 3/4" X 7/8" with slit foam spaced perfectly to accomodate flys from #18-12 on one side, and the other side having a 2" magnet pad for midges and tiny stuff along with more slit foam. Then another box the same size, but with foam slits to accomodate larger #10-6 buggers, leeches, muddlers and stuff. Why is it that all the otherwise perfect boxes are so blasted thick ? I don't use big hackled drys, so I have no use for boxes over an inch thick that cause bulging pockets on my vest and make me feel like I have huge boobs coupled with a massive beer belly The old Perrine boxes are the only thing I can find that aren't overly thick, but they are heavy, sink like a rock, and don't latch very well. I might just undertake making my own somehow...any ideas? Or does anyone know of a source for quality uncompartmentized (how's that for a word?) plastic boxes ?

Greg Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 I agree with you in that it is hard to find a good flybox and I agree with the last poster in that the wheatley boxes you can customize are the best I have found to date. My kids got me one for Christmas 1994 and it is now my favorite by far. Mine has ripple foam on one side and slotted foam on the other. It looks like it will last forever, is not too thick, latches securely, holds a lot of flies, and is not horribly $$. The only thing I'm not sure of is if they float. They may because of the foam inserts? I've never tested it. I believe my kids ordered mine from: http://www.flyfishusa.com/flyboxes/wheatley-boxes.htm Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
Brian K. Shaffer Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 Boxes in my vest right now : C&F Dewitt Orvis Morell Tach' It Cliff Myran Thats just off the top of my head... so I agree with you.. box decision can be a real pain. Here is how I figure my setup : All dries go in plastic Myran or Dewitt boxes - no exceptions. Putting dries in foam fly boxes will ultimately ruin the underside of the hackled collar or head. I have seen it a thousand times.. and the only way to get those crushed hackles back out straight is to steam them back to shape. (this works!) All scuds / sowbugs go in Tach' It boxes. I do make sure to leave them open in the car overnight to dry so they do not rust the magnetic pad. All beadheads go in the C&F boxes.. they are easy to organize that way. All midges go in C&F boxes.. and I use thier magnet tool to get them out. All streamers go in the foam Morell boxes. (again, leave them open to dry) Everything needed in one box - use the Cliff Box half magnetic / half foam. I use the Orvis configurable box for hoppers and really big dry stuff. All bass flies go in Bass Pro configurable boxes first - then into a chest pack when I am ready to fish a stretch of water - or the whole boxes go with me in the pontoon boat. I am under the impression there is no " perfect " fly box. Thats why it is fun to collect so many! Even though I own somewhere in the neighborhood of 8,000 flies.. you can never have enough boxes to put them in! best fishes - Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
Members Simsmarine Posted March 4, 2006 Author Members Posted March 4, 2006 Holy retail,Batman! Huge price difference between the two links above. Damnation! Once again though...over an inch thick.
mizzouflyfisher Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 I use only C&F & morell fly boxes. I love the C&F fly boxes despite the $$$. I currently have 3 and am looking to buy a 4th. I use a fishpond pack 99% of the time, so I can only carry 4 boxes. 1 C&F box carries all of my dry flies, 1 C&F threader box carries all of my scuds plus some midges, 1 C&F (the one that carries 564 flies) box carries all of my midges, nymphs and soft hackles, and 1 morell box carries streamers, cracklebacks, mini jigs, etc. I also use a morell box for my terrestrials. I don't think I have a problem with hackle getting crushed, but, I don't check them very often because I don't fish dries very often. The C&F boxes keep flies organized so nicely, plus, I can put size 10-26 all in the same box. I won't use anything else, but that's just me. MIzzouflyfisher
