Roaring River Veteran Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Made it down to the park for a couple of hours today. From about 2pm to 4pm. I fished the fly area and did pretty well. I caught between 15 and 20 fish, but nothing big. I was throwing mainly #14 zebra midges and burlaps. I did throw a grhe for a while along with a griffis gnat, but the best action was on the zebra. I was suprised at how merky the water was. I was using a 6x tippet, and didn't have any problems. I also saw a gentleman using a white thread jig under a float and doing very well. The weather was 68 degrees with a little wind. all in all a very nice day. There are still a lot of fish in the river. This week should be great fishing. Good luck and good fishing RRV Good luck and Good fishing RRV
shawncat Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Did you happen to see the braggen board?I wonder about all those BIG fish I was reading about all winter.
Members SGFChief Posted March 7, 2006 Members Posted March 7, 2006 Opening morning all 4 of my party each caught one 3-4 lbs but nothing of real super size. All of the "lunkers" we caught had pink flesh and had wintered in the stream. I went to the weigh station and the biggest so far was under 7 lbs and this was about 3 PM opening day. Combine the last 2 years opening days, we still easily caught more fish this year than ever--weather was unbelievable and easily fewer than 2K fishing. We fished both Saturday and Sunday as well, olive wooly buggers, chamois-san juan worms, and even lt cahills in the afternoon made the days pass far too quickly. I haven't heard of anything large coming out and spoke to a number of the same individuals who same the same. Most likely some of them are still there...
Members Tailwater Posted March 7, 2006 Members Posted March 7, 2006 How bad was the flow? I heard from someone who talked to the hatchery manager there and said they're only seeing about 4.5M gal per day flow at this point--5M gallons is considered a dangerous flow level. If the Table Rock scene (down about 14 feet) is any indicator, those big fish may turn into dried prunes before too long....
Roaring River Veteran Posted March 7, 2006 Author Posted March 7, 2006 From all the stories that I have heard an 8lber is the biggest fish that I have heard of being caught. I was reading somewhere the other day that RR was running at about 15%. If I remember correctly RR normal output is about 25M. If that is correct they would be under 4M. This really isn't abnormal it is just that usually it happens in August not March. The hatchery is gravety fed so with the new gates in the falls and the revamped hatchery they should be okay but we really need rain or come August you will be able to fish with a dip net. Good luck and Good fishing RRV
