Members mohogtrapper Posted July 30, 2008 Members Posted July 30, 2008 I hope no one was expecting the answer!!! LOL I can catch fish those few hours before dark, and I have no problem catching fish after dark, say 10pm on this time of year. I cannot seem to find fish from sunset to dark, dark. Seems the bite stops in general. I thought this was the "magic" hour? Can anyone shed some "light" on fishing this time of day? Thanks Scott
Whack'emGood Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 That has been (most trips) our best time of the eve/night for the past month and a half or so. At about 8:00 we switch all of our gear to our nighttime stuff (jigs and texas rigged soft plastics--in dark colors) and fish them super slow. We either catch'em really well (numbers and size) or we don't catch any from this time until dark-- I would say about 80% of our trips we hammer them during this time, and 20% we are left scratching our heads with nothing. They have been anywhere from 12-25 feet. We put the boat in 30 feet and fish it all the way back to the boat-- bluff ends, flat ledges, and points. Hope this helps. Good luck! If I can't catch them on the conventional tackle that I already use, then I guess I just can't catch them." -LK (WHACK'EM)
Sam Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 In general, that "twilight bite" is good for me. As long as there's a little bit of light, I think fishing is often good. The problem I've always had is with the first couple of hours of full darkness - I usually can't get anything going again until about 11 or 11:30 p.m. Then it often picks up again and I've caught a lot of good fish around midnight. I read somewhere that it takes a bass' eyes about two hours to adjust to the dark and during that time they don't feed much. Maybe - because that matches my experience. If there's good moonlight they'll sometimes keep biting during that first couple of hours of darkness. Same with artificial light, so I've learned to fish around where there's some dock lights at that time.
Members mohogtrapper Posted July 30, 2008 Author Members Posted July 30, 2008 Thanks guys, I am still getting a point bite, but once that shuts off, I can't seem to find any fish that will bite. I have tried a few locations like you described, but I guess I'll search for richer waters. I hope to get out this week, I will give you a report.
Members mohogtrapper Posted August 1, 2008 Author Members Posted August 1, 2008 Well, I tried to fish Wednesday night. Caught 1 small keeper before dark, then came the storm. Stayed under a dock until it let up around 10 or so. Caught 6 more fish after the storm with 5 being keepers. I was fishing bluffs.
