My buddy and I are heading to the White in October for a few days to fish for trout. We have generally fished Taneycomo in the past for trout but are intrigued by what the White has to offer.

We were wondering if there is a location on the White that is better than others or a location that someone would suggest. We generally fish with both fly rod and spinning rods for trout. We like to use jigs when fishing with spinning rods. Given that the white is so large, we are curious as to an area on the White that would be a good area to start. We are only there a few days, so won't be able to cover a lot of water.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Some suggestions:

1. Rim Shoals - above it (Redbud), in the C and R, and below it to Crooked Creek

2. White Hole and Sportsmans Hole (they are back to back)

3. Bull Shoals state park, the C and R down to the shoal below the state park - but remember the special regs begin November 1.

All three are large enough to fish an entire weekend, all three are easy access, and all three hold good numbers and size. Good luck.

Boat or no boat: that is the question!

If wading, I'd go to BS State Park below the dam or Rim Shoals at Cotter. I've had great success at both locations over the years. You may also want to spend one day on the Norfork tailwater.

With a boat, I'd float Wildcat and maybe some of the others mentioned here.

We will be in a boat. Does that change your suggestions?

My buddy has a 16 foot bass boat (35hp engine). Do you think we should bring it down or just rent? He does not care if we bang bottom occasionally.

No, but you don't want to get hung up in the shoals. Leave the bass boat at home. There have been a few incidents this year with bass boats. Even on high water there are some hazards.

Rent a jon.

With the way the water is running, should it continue the small bass boat will be fine. Last week I saw some big bass boats on the river one with a 250HP Yamaha several with smaller around 150hp motors. The big thing is watch the wake, the river boats dont handle large wakes very well. One rude dude was doing his best to swamp the river boats.

Was told some of the older guides are pretty good with the old David and Golith slings and golf balls. So please watch the wake.

There is a fellow with a white bass boat a Whaler I think with Florida reg, that is cutting everyones drift off, if someone knows who he is they need to explain the bopat on the dfrift has the right of way. Not him running in short and cutting the drifting boat off.
