Members Wrath Posted August 14, 2008 Members Posted August 14, 2008 Just trying to recall the general run timing and fishable water levels .... I plan on fishing quite a few weekends. Also, what flies (nymphs, streamers) do you guys typically use? Or hardware for that matter? I really want to crack the Spey rod during the day .... is this a possibly venture or are there too many people around? I know the info is availibel in some old threads ... but woring OT, pursuing my masters degree, etc really cuts into my time. Thanks!
Micheal Kyle Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 All of October and November with the peak around the last week of October and the first week of November. As far as the flies go Big sculpins, Egg sucking leeches, eggs, beads, mohair leeches, Kelly Galloups articulated flies like the Sex Dungeon and the T/A Rainbow or the Zoo Cougar. You can also you big nymphs under a lighted indicator at night. That is how a lot of people will fish when the water is off and epessiaclly if it is on, it can be very effective way to fish. I just prefer to strip streamers. That's what I will use at night. During the day I will use big eggs, beads, big Scuds like a size 10 or a 12, or most of the flies I use at night. I like to fish with just about any color, but for me at night the darker the night the darker the fly the lighter the night night the lighter colored flies. (i.e. no moon use black full moon use white) not to say those colors will not work any other night as well. I DO LIKE PURPLE AND RED A LOT! Maybe we can get together if they continue to run this water full tilt during the run and spey fish, I have been taking lessons and would like nothing less than to catch a huge brown out of Taney with my SPEY ROD Oh Boy I cant wait. Members Wrath Posted August 17, 2008 Author Members Posted August 17, 2008 I'm defintely game for meeting up and playing with the Spey rods. I'm sure we won't be well liked cracking those out there. I've got a 14-ft Spey and I've used it some in Michigan, but I need to practice more before I go to the PNW and Alaska. I'm not sure what you are using, but I've got a Skagit set-up currently. Definitely fun to play with as long as they run some water! Now that I've been stuck in Kansas for a few years, it's hard to practice and use the spey.
TroutBum4wt Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 Wrath, I'm new to spey roding. Why would folks at Taney dislike spey bums? I've been using a 11-ft switch rod a few weeks now down by the outlets and other places and haven't noticed any dirty looks or comments. The switch rod has really been working well for me with the high water and I believe would be just fine with lower and wadable water, too. Cheers "Where There Are Trout, There's Hope" - John Gierach

Cheers I guess it depends on the traffic ... but if you go through the swing and have a fly on the dangle 90' downriver, it might tick off a person or two if you taking up 90' of rivers edge to fish. P.S. I'll have my switch rods down there this fall as well.
TroutBum4wt Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 That makes perfect sense. Thanks for the tip. "Where There Are Trout, There's Hope" - John Gierach
