Don't know what you call it but Lightning Bug fits.

Good one! Hit through the roof in May, 06 and nailed a recessed canister light, setting the attic/roof ablaze. Lived in a camper in the driveway for 6 months. This time it hit the DISH system, and only a little fire. No metal roof. We have 80 foot trees, and there is an abandoned three-story schoolhouse on top of the hill a block away and those don't get struck. You think somebody's trying to tell me sum-thin'?

One thing is for certain, I'm gonna have to solve this lightning problem somehow, cuz I'm dang sure NOT gonna start livin' right!!

That shiny shell back smokes — no wonder the 'gills want to eat it.

Lacking turkey breast feathers, I think I might try with rooster pheasant. Maybe I'll even dub the body and really ruin your fly.

Thanks for posting the pattern.

I actually have started messing around with putting 'chukar' feathers across the top. Anything with a color pattern or shiny should work. The chukar have a tan and black feather. Looks ok, so I run out of turkey feathers, have a backup. I think I am going to go to one of our local pheasant hunting guides (the pen raised birds) and start collecting feathers.

I was wondering if you had tried using a synthetic for the back? I like to use mylar strips (read icicles from the christmas tree) for scudback. I have also used the holographic greens and blues to some success.

I was also wondering if you had ever used peacock for the body? You know the old saying, "Bluegill love peacock hearl." I was thinking about the butt section, or perhaps thorax.

It is an awesome fly, and I plan to tie some up next time I am at the bench.

I loves me a Bluegill fly.

'No' on the peacock or the synthetic back, but shoot, there's no reason that wouldn't work just as well. or using the dubbing trick as the other poster mentioned. Might change the float/sink characteristics, so I would be curious how the fly would act in the water.

I've found that I give away a fair amount of these flies to my buddies and others I meet at all the bluegill hotspots. So by using chenille, and not painting the heads, I can tie much faster.

And with the wife getting into the bluegill bug game, I'll need even more...
