hfdhoosier Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 The wife and I went fishing at Montauk with the Ozark Flyfishers this last weekend. Friday we hit the water at around 11am in the fly area. Fished hard till about 7:30. Caught lots of fish, I caught them mainly on flourescent fire orange san juan worm, pheasant tail nymph size 18 , and a red zebra midge size 18 with black wire ribbing and a gunmetal bead. My wife caught most of hers on a tri colored glo ball she bought at the lodge with a yellow head. Late evening there was a big hatch, fish were sipping the surface everywhere, appeared to be a little black bodied bug with white wings in a size 30-32. I put on a black mosquito I had tied with grizzly hackle and caught a few on it. There was almost too many bugs on the water to get them to hit my larger offering regularly. Saturday we slept in and hit the water at noon. Again the red zebra midge and san juan were the ticket. I bought the san juan at the lodge, so if you get down there you can get the orange san juan color there and compare color. I took the san juan to the fly shop and was able to match the color and bought some chennille to match so I can tie my own. I also caught fish on a brown wd-40 size 18. We only fished for about 4 hours Sat. Ozark Flyfishers had their buffet Sat. night, the food was catered by the lodge, great meal. We tied flies together as a club afterwards in the searcy room across the road from the lodge. Sunday we got out at 12:30 pm and fished till 4pm. The wife limited out at 4pm, we decided to keep a limit each for some fresh trout to eat. She caught hers on tri colored glo ball and a white glo ball. I probably caught 20 fish, all on red zebra midge, orange san juan, olive wooly bugger and lime green san juan. Probably missed another 30 strikes on red zebra, they were hitting light and I wasnt quick enough on the set, strike indicator would barely wobble and I had on a very small indicator. it was a great weekend of fishing. Will try to post some pics later. The water was low and clear. I used Maxima 2 lb ultragreen tippet all weekend.
