I have a 8 wt fly rod that was given to me . It is 8ft long, fiberglass. Does it have to have 8 wt line? If not, what line would you recommend? Thanks.

With fiberglass you can typically go up or down a couple of line weights. But the casting action with glass is typically much slower, thereby if you overline one or two weights it will slow the action down even more. Consequently if you underline it will speed the action up. Best to first try it with the designated line weight then go up or down from there. There is always someone out there that will let you try their reel and line on your rod to see how it will perform. Fly shops will do that for you also. Good luck.
