timsfly Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Roaring River came up about 8 feet last night, it has dropped a few feet already, but it will be tomorrow before it is decent fishing, people are still fishing today, and catching a few on power eggs and plastic worms, not so well for the fly fisherman, wait a day or two before comming down. Dry hollow was big again last night, flooded the entire park, the DNR evacuated all three campgrounds last night. The campgrounds will be opened back up today. Lshack2 Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Tim, I am scheduled out of the office on Weds. and really NEED to go fishing. Do you think the water will come down enough to be fishable? I assume San Juan Worms, eggs, and big wooly's would be the best bet? I don't want to keep any fish, so would you recommend fishing the C&R area? Any guidance would be appreciated.... timsfly Posted September 16, 2008 Author Posted September 16, 2008 Water is high and murky but is dropping quickly, it is already down about 6' from yesterday morning and it looks much better this morning. I fished a few minutes this morning, sinking line, big woolybugger and caught 3 in about an hour, I fished up near the spring, the water is much clearer up that way. Lots of fish in the river, two over 6 lbs were caught yesterday, both on power eggs, you never know what will be caught after we get high water like we got this weekend. I suspect there will be some big fish caught the next few weeks out of the upper end of the park. Saw a lot of fish caught this morning, most on Power Eggs, and few were catching them on black Rooster Tails. In this type of water the Power Eggs will be very effective, the flo. yellow, orange, and chartreuse will probably work the best, brown will still be good if you are fishing near the hatchery. In this type of water fly fishing can be tough, so long thin diameter leaders are best, these will help your flies sink faster with less weight. Flash back nymphs, woolybuggers, brassies, anything with a bit of flash in it will work well when the water is murky. Don't think the dry fly fishing will be any good until this weekend, and maybe a bit after that, as soon as the water clears we will go back to the Adams, beetles, caddis, midges, and hoppers. Glo-balls, San Juan worms, and thread jigs will fish well in the high water. If you are using jigs, then jigs with a bit of flash in them or bright colored, will work best, the 1/32 and heavier jigs work best right now. In zone 3 Power Bait and nightcrawlers will be working well, in the murky water minnows will still be effective if you have a net to catch some or you can buy them at some of the local bait shops. In the murky water small Rapala crankbait minnows, gold spoons and about anything that will sink fast will work for the spin fisherman. Call the shop if you have more questions, I'll be in Alaska the next 2 weeks so there won't be a report next week, so call the shop and talk to Duane or Jeff, they can give you info on water conditions, good luck. Closed on Wed. Have a great week on the water. Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
